The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. =============================================================================== GRAVES CEMETERY - JACK COUNTY, TEXAS BY LEROY LANE & LEROY WILLIAMS NOVEMBER 9, 1991 SUBMITTED BY BENNIE BOB GRAVES The Graves Cemetery is located 6 miles north of Jacksboro on Highway 148, turn left (west) on FM Road 2190 for 3 miles to a Graves Cemetery sign. Turn left (south) across a cattle guard for 2 miles. There will be one or more locked gates between the highway and the cemetery so a key will be needed to get to the cemetery. The land is owned by Wilmer Grum and is leased by Billy Joe Easter, 940-507-6128 The cemetery contains about 2 acres under fence. In the southeast corner is a sheet iron roofed tabernacle that serves as a shelter during the "Cemetery Working Day". Traditionally the Work Day includes "dinner on the ground" and a program when all of the families gather to maintain the cemetery and graves. J.T. Graves gave the land for the cemetery that bears his name and he is buried in this cemetery. We were not able to locate his sandstone marker when the cemetery was surveyed on November 9, 1991, however, he is located on some of the older census that have been made of this cemetery. In November 1991, 146 graves were located. The oldest marked grave in this cemetery is that of R.C. Dunlap, February 8, 1881. The cemetery probably started about that time. There were not many settlers north of Jacksboro until the late 1870s or early 1880s because of the Indian raids. The Indians would come out of Oklahoma on horse stealing expeditions and when they found any unarmed settlers or women and children, the Indians would murder them. They were seldom stupid enough to attack any settlements that could defend themselves.
