Friends of Sabine Pass Battleground

Friends of Sabine Pass Battleground was formed in November 2008 by members of historic preservation and heritage groups to create an organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the Battleground and historic sits in the area.  Members include descendants of Confederate and Union veterans and the general public interested in military history.

The organization publishes a newsletter entitled Sabine Pass Beacon.  The Beacon is a well-written, informative publication that contains numerous original articles about the battle and the people and events surrounding it.  If you are interested in finding out more about Friends or the Beacon, contact Ed Cotham, Editor.

Here's a list of some of the articles in the Spring 2009 publication:

  • Status of the Battleground with Donna Williams, Director of Texas Historical Commission's Historic Sites Division.

  • The Walking Beam - "Disabling of the Gunboat USS Clifton at Sabine Pass"

  • Recovery of the Walking Beam

  • Jefferson Davis and the Davis Guards

  • The Davis Guard Medal

  • Lt. R. W. Dowling's Official Report - Battle of Sabine Pass
