Spindletop Bayou

Spindletop Bayou rises three miles south of Nome in southern Liberty County (at 29°58' N, 94°29' W) and runs southeast for twenty-three miles, crossing into Chambers and subsequently Jefferson counties, before reaching a point in western Jefferson County where it is named Spindletop Ditch (29°44' N, 94°19' W). The latter watercourse in turn flows east and south for another ten miles before reaching its mouth on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway,qv eighteen miles west of Sabine Pass (at 29°41' N, 94°13' W). In addition to flowing into the irrigation and drainage system of Spindletop Ditch, the upper stages of Spindletop Bayou itself have been altered to increase its potential use by area farmers and residents. Spindletop Bayou is in flat to rolling terrain with local escarpments. Vegetation consists primarily of loblolly pine and sweetgum forests in soil composed of deep, fine sandy loam.
