Notes:Dr. Pattillo moved to Austin State Hospital and served as Assistant Superintendent. He retired in 1973 and was replaced by Benny Britton. Dr. William Thomas was Superintendent at Rusk State Hospital when Dr. Powell was asked to retire in 1937. He agreed to retire if Dr. Thomas was selected to replace him. Dr. Thomas did replace Dr. Powell and Dr. Powell continued to serve as Assistant Superintendent and Physician under Dr. Thomas. Benny Britton was the first non-physician selected as an Assistant Superintendent of a Texas State Hospital. Don Gilbert was the first non-physician selected as a Superintendent of a Texas State Hospital. Beatrice Butler was the first black female Superintendent of a State Hospital. Dr. Charles W. Castener, Assistant Superintendent, TSH, went to Rusk State Hospital as Superintendent, 1923 or 1927. |
