Kaufman Cemetery: I live in Tom Green County, Tx. which is several hundred miles from this area, but have just returned home from a visit of the East Texas area finding several old cemeteries where my ancestors are buried. One of them is the Kaufman Cemetery located S.W. side of FM 2757 and N.W. about 0.02 miles on FM 741. It is in much need of cleaning up as some of the stone could not be seen due to so may weeds. Two of my ancestors I did find that had small fences around them, thanks to someone caring. This was my first time to visit this cemetery and I just wanted to cry it was in such sad shape. There are Confederate Soldiers buried here and thier families. They deserve more honor than this. I will help in any way that I can to start this process. But I need some help in locating someone that has knowledge in how to go about getting this done. If anyone in this area knows how to set it in motion, please let me know. I would like to make an apology to the people in Kaufman County who are taking care of the area cemeteries, esp. KK Hunt who is in charge of the clean up of these old cemeteries. I found out that she already had plans for the clean up of this cemetery. Also I called the cemetery the KAUFMAN cemetery and it is the BLACKLAND cemetery. She explained to me that this cleaning needs to be done properly, so none of the stone are damaged more than they already are. The Historical commission of Kaufman County does need all the funds they can get though to help with these much needed projects. Many stones are in need of repair. Thanks, Bertha Tyson (a Guynes descendant)

Looking for surname KELLER. WILEY COLUMBUS KELLER married MARY ELIZABETH LANDERS. They migrated from Calhoun County, Alabama to Kaufman County. The only reference I found was in the Landowner Records - W.C. Keller owned 157 acres in Kaufman. Two children of WILEY & MARY KELLER were born in Kaufman County. Their names were CHARLIE KELLER, born 9-1-1888, and MARY KELLER, born Nov. 1890. The KELLER family may have migrated from Kaufman to Oklahoma and to Taylor County, Texas. WILEY COLUMBUS KELLER died in Hugo, Choctaw, Oklahoma. His wife, MARY ELIZABETH LANDERS KELLER, died in Ovalo, Taylor, Texas. If anyone has further information, please e-mail me. Thank you.

Every time I pass within 100 miles of College Mound, I stop and spend a few minutes there. I have found no other place on earth so peaceful and calm. Surely God and His angels have blessed this beautiful part of His Earth. I was given the gift of being a small part of your congregation many years ago while stationed at the now closed Nike Hercules Base on the hill, just on the out-skirts of Terrell. Being from back East, I was overcome at times by the hospitality and honesty of your membership. Thank You. I still enjoy the same foods that have become a part of my daily life as result of the many "pot-lucks" I attended on Church grounds. I truly miss the faith that this congregation allowed me to experience during my short time there. My College Mound coffee mug reminds me daily of this most wonderful place in my adopted State of Texas, no matter where I've hung my hat. May God Bless you all! Bill Reilly Flagstaff, Arizona

Interested in finding out whether or not my great uncle--Otis (aka Odis) Gipson--had family in Terrell, TX. According to family sources, Otis (born around 1894) had a family that he left in Terrell, TX consisting of a wife and 7 children. Names were not provided, but he did share the information with family members in Louisiana just prior to his death around 1930. Otis had intended to send for his family but became gravely ill and subsequently died. But he did tell family members about his family in TX. Any information re: Gipsons (aka Gibsons) from Terrell, TX will be appreciated. Thank you! Obadiah J.K. Simmons, Jr. a son of Jessie D. Gipson-Simmons... a daughter of the late Dewey Gipson, Sr... a son (and brother of Otis Gipson) of the late Charley Gipson & Malinda Anderson-Gipson of Simsboro, LA in the Mt. I have just begun my search and already hit the proverbial brickwall with the paternal side (Roberts) of my family. No one seems to know my grandfather, Nicholas Roberts. Nicholas, w Katie Gamble, s Hugh LeRoy and d Thelma (Sis) moved to Kaufman Cnty about 1900 from Navarro Cnty. Son Jefferson Crandall (J.C.) was born in Kaufman County in 1902 and went to school at Grey's Prairie with his brother and sister. Nicholas died about 1904. Wife Katie stayed and eventually bought the property on FM 148. We still own the property and our daughter and family (gggrandchildren) live there now. Does anyone remember any of this family? Katie, brother Hugh Gamble, his wife Ruby, Katie's sons Hugh LeRoy and JC (my father) and JC's wife Miley Ponder are all buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Scurry.

This is my first visit to this web site. I have tried over the past to see if there were indeed a web site for Wilson Chapel. My grandparents attended church at Wilson Chapel many years ago and are now laid to rest there. I have other family members burried there and somehow I would like to explore who of my family is there. My Uncle Melvin was the last person in our immediate family to be burried there. My father was born in Kaufman and I was born in Terrell. I currently live in Los Angeles, California. One of the most special things in my life to do is visit Wilson Chapel with my father on the rare occasions I get to come home to Texas. Wilson Chapel is a very important part of my make up. I have a beautiful Wilson Chapel plate hanging in my kitchen that belonged to my grandmother. I'd love to hear or communicate with anyone who may have interest in emailing me about Wilson Chapel and it's history. I'm so happy to have found this web site.

If it weren't for the hard work and dedication of Lynda Harwell and Kathey this website would not be what it is today. And if it weren't for the volunteers at the Kaufman Library, I would still no nothing about the death of my gg grandmother. Because Lynda took the time to go to the Kaufman libraries and trascribe obituaries from newspapers, I have found the obituary for my gg grandmother Ellen Fletcher. I have looked for over 6 years trying to find information on her death to no avail. I wrote to the Kauman County Library for a lookup and a volunteer there sent me some information that she found on the Fletcher surname. Although she didn't find my exact given name of my ancestor, she sent me the general information anyway. And the obituary I needed happen to be in a book that was compiled by Lynda Harwell. It was an obituary book. Although my gg grandmother's name has been mispelled, her age and residence are accurate. I just wanted to thank Lynda, Kathey and the volunteers at the Kaufman Library who have taken the time to assist us in keeping the memories of our ancestors living through the unselfish giving of themselves and their time. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You are all very precious and generous people. You have truly blessed my heart.

I want to think Abby for her hard work getting this website together. She has spent so many hours on this and it is voluntary work. God bless you Abby. Also to Linda Harwell and Kathey Hunt- God bless you also. I know from my own experience of enumerating cemeteries and then typing it all up- it is so time consuming. I loved doing it though. It feels so good to help others out and to help them find a missing link in their family tree. You must love it also or you wouldn't be doing it. God bless you both. Kaufman County is so fortunate to have you ladies around! Everyone remember without all these wonderful volunteers you would not have this wonderful website. Great job ladies!

My Grandfather was Elmer Carl Fox married to Ollie Hester Gaskey. I am researching the following families: Fox and Gaskey. My G Grandfather, George Washington Gaskey was listed in the 1920 Kaufman County Census. I am also researching his first wife, Willie LEWIS. I have no information on the parents of Martha Gentry or Willie Lewis. James A. Fox was married three times. He was widowed first by Harriet LaRoe, then Cynthia Seitz. Here again, I have no information on the family of Cynthia Seitz. I appreciate all the information posted on this site concerning the Fox, Shaw, and LaRoe Families. At this time, I am planning on attending the Fox Reunion on Sunday, May 25th. I'm looking forward to meeting MANY "unknown cousins".

Well I just found them in your wonderful Kaufman Cemetery site. They are buried at the Henderson-Mosely Family Cemetery! The transcription for the husband, John WILSON says born 09 Oct 1806 and died 15 May 1967. I assume he died 15 May 1867. Can anyone say for sure? Or did he die, say 15 May 1876? Through this site and the local Kaufman County Library, I was able to find where my Bradley grandparents and my Johnson great-great-grandmother were buried. All are in the Kaufman City Cemetary. I also found some family histories of the Boykins, Ayres, Boggs and several others from my father's line in several of the Kaufman County Memorial Publications located in the library. Kaufman County has done a wonderful job of maintaining records.

I really enjoy looking through all the county records and documents that are available, without charge, to everyone visiting this website. It is truly alot more fun to study the past, when the main characters are your descendents, and their daily lives are now our history.

I'm not sure, everything seems to be accessible now, or at least, moving in that direction. I'd love to volunteer, but unfortunately I do not have a car and the computer I'm using is not mine, plus I am "internetly challenged".(I can do the basics.) However, if you have the need for a housebound, "computer challenged," volunteer, who is really a quick learner, then I could give it a try.

My Kaufman County success story:
I'm still working on mine, maybe later.

I would like to make the following comments:
Thank you all, for making this website easy, available, and workable. Usually when I am researching my ancestors, I will discover a site that seems to overflow with information. However, once I begin my journey into the document or site, I suddenly discover, (too late), that I either need to call, visit, or pay a monthly charge to access any information. Thank you for not charging a monthly fee, and thank you for not reducing your website's data, because a monthly fee is not being charged.

I am looking for any information on the Robert Newton Williamson family -- He was my granddad. He was lived in or near Kaufman-- I do not have an exact address-- I do not know if there were address back in the 1880's on to 1903. He moved to Crandall, Texas (in Kaufman County and worked on a ranch. He was a cowboy. He was first married to Jeeie Albeta Nixon, she died in 1906-- where we do not know. Robert N Williamson then married Mattie Ballard, from Paris, Illinois in 1909. My father, Ernest Lee Williamson was borne in Crandall, Texas 1911 --- so of Robert and Mattie Williamson. He was suppose to have worked on a ranch near Crandall and also worked in the cotton gin in Crandall. Robert died in 1941 and Mattie Williamson died in 1966. Both are buried next to each other at the Crandaa cemetery. Thanks, Anything anybody might know about the Robertr Newton Williamson family, please advise me Thanks-- David Williamson

Kaufman, the first person from the state of Texas to be elected to the US Congress. I'm happy to respond and I appreciate you brining this to my attention. Upon further research, I did learn that David Kaufman did follow his father's Jewish faith. It was my original understanding that Mr. Kaufman was raised in his mother's Christian faith. I've now had a history lesson, and it was very interesting to learn that Mr. Kaufman, like me, served on the House Rules Committee (in fact as chairman). After reading about Mr. Kaufman's accomplishments during his short life, I'm very proud that I am the only Jewish Texan to serve after him. Again, thank you for brining this to my attention. If I can ever be of assistance, please feel free to call on me. Sincerely, MARTIN FROST Member of Congress MF/sm Confirmation # 1484595

I noticed on the internet some information about Clemeth Criag Wren of Kaufman County. I'm beginning to think maybe this is my gggrandfather. It notes Clemeth Craig Wren was from around Terrell Texas. It also mentions Margaret DeSpain, and Hale Mathews. There is also a mention that he might be from Cleburene, Texas. My gggrandfather was from Cleburne, Tx. I don't know who wrote and left the information....please contact me my family has been searching for years about Clem where he came from etc. Had been told he was possibly hiding from something.

I would like to make the following comments:
I'm very anxious....if any of this sounds familiar, or you know someone from the area please let me know. Barb from California

John Turner has previously written re: Clemeth Craif Wren of Cleburne, Tx area. I am Clemeth Wrens ggrand daughter. I would like to discuss with anyone the facts of Clemeth Criag Wren b mid 1800s. I was told his mother was Mary Matilda Fowler Wren Turner. His father I'm not sure of. Some think he was purhaps Culy Bill Brocious. Other family names are Alice Brock wife, father in law, Lucinda Boulware mother in law, children Rex Wren son, Beulah Wren daugher, and my grandmother Annie Wren. I had been told by my grandmother Clemeth had changed his name due to being in some type of trouble. If you know anything, or know anyone that may know anything about this please write: Barbee @ tco.net

Information about his family and roots in Pennsylvania

I would like to see added to this site:
More information about his childhood in Pennsylvania. His brother was the founder of the village of Boiling Springs. David purchased one of the lots in the village which was sold after his death by his family. He made a visit to Carlisle, PA with Sam Houston and they both gave speeches in front of the county courthouse.

My Kaufman County success story:

I would like to make the following comments:
I would like to communicate with anyone who knows move about his roots and if he had contact with his family in Pennsylvania. Are there papers or letters that survive in any archive? His brother Daniel was an agent on the Underground Railroad in Boiling Springs for about 12 years until he was sued by a Maryland slaveowner. He was involved in legal cases for fives years and eventually was fined about $4000. He almost lost his home but abolitionist groups helped him pay the fine. Another brother, Abraham Kaufman was an eminent Presbyterian minister. He was pastor of Saint Philips' Church in Charleston, SC, where he died in 1849 at age 28.

I think it is a knights of columbus artifact - secret society.

Tonight I discovered loads of information on Zachariah Walker Moore. I am a descendant of his first wife's grandmother and have been working on a research paper on the family. I was searching for further information on Laura Louise Damron Moore and the daughter she had with Zachariah Walker Moore. I notice that Kathey K. Hunt's webpage on Zachariah Walker Moore went up on April 10th. I started searching for info on April 20-21 and again tonight. This is a wonderful webpage and the information is awesome. Thank you so much, Kathey, for sharing this information.

My Kaufman County success story:
After many years of searching Van Zandt County records, I was told by the genealogical library in Canton that the nearest cemetery to my gggrand father's property in Wills Point was actually in Kaufman County. I have searched in Navarro and Ellis Counties to determine both my gggrand parents burial place. A visit to the geneaology department in the library in Kaufman shed no light on it but the obituaries in the Wills Point Chronicle indicated my gggrand mother, Mrs. William(Francis Freeman)Radney was buried October 18, 1894 in the Cedar Grove cemetery at Cedar Grove in Kaufman Cty.

On the 22nd day of October, 2005 I visited Kaufman County in search of my Greatgranddad's burial site in the Old Mexican Graveyard, I have to admit I had one heck of time finding it, which I never did. So, I began asking the people of Kaufman County the whereabouts of the Old Mexican Graveyard and the response was overwhelming, these people will take the extra mile to assist. They supplied me with alot of information and all in a cheerful spirit, and with this they gave me hope to continue my search and now a photo of my Greatgranddad's tombstone is on the website. GOD BLESS EM ALL

I would like to make the following comments:
Dear Ms. Kathey Hunt, thank you for adding my Greatgranddad Antonio Beltran's tombstone photo to this website. GOD BLESS YA GIRL!

I was born in the Becker Community north of Kemp and attended Lone Oak School until I was almost 13. My parents then moved to the Arcadia Community East of Kemp and later the Aley Community to the South. I went to Kemp High School, but droped out during my junior to go to work for North American Avaitation in Dallas. I would like to correspond with any one who lived in or around Kemp in the 1930 and early 1940s. I am sure we share some of the same memories.
