OBITUARY - SHIRLEY DIANE (DOUGLAS) WEBB

Shirley Diane Douglas Webb was born in Woodward, Oklahoma, on Feb. 8, 1930, the daughter of O. A. Douglas and 
Jane ( Carson ) Douglas. She died on November 3, 2012 at her home in Kerrville Texas . In 1938 the family moved to 
Kerrville TX where her father managed a new grocery store, the Pure Food Store, on Earl Garrett Street . She 
remembers that trip to Texas . The four of them rode in a borrowed coupe with no back seat but it was a trip made fun 
by her parents. Her father pointed out that when they crossed the Red River into Texas , the grass was green. It had 
been brown in Oklahoma . 

Shirley's mother, Jane was active in music clubs and directed the choir at the Kerrville Methodist Church .

When World War II came along, Shirley's father enlisted and was stationed at Roswell , NM , where he trained to become
an Air Traffic Controller in the Army Air Corps. After the war he was stationed at the International Airport in Brownsville ,
Texas , as a government employee of the CAA and the family moved from Kerrville to Brownsville in the summer of 
1945. Shirley attended Brownsville schools and Texas Southmost College . On October 16, 1952, she married James 
Robert Webb.

She was a musician and was well-known locally in Brownsville as a church organist for over 25 years (serving at the 
Methodist, Presbyterian and Christian Churches ). She also served as a pianist who played for numerous local 
programs, plays, dance recitals, school band and choir soloists and theatre productions. Also in Brownsville , she 
worked as Music Director at radio station KBOR for 5 years and taught elementary school music at the Episcopal Day 
School for several years.

During her business career, she was a loan officer and Assistant Manager of Valley Federal Employees Federal Credit 
Union. She was a past president of the Brownsville Junior Service League and served as a Director on the Boards of 
the Brownsville Boys Club, Camille Lightner Playhouse and Rio Grande Valley Music Festival.

In 1994, when Jim retired, they moved back to Kerrville and soon embarked on a new "career" of activities in genealogy 
and computer work. Shirley was webmaster of the Kerr County, Terry County and Haskell County TXGenWeb 
genealogy pages and volunteered at the Kerr Regional History Center and Archives. She was a member of Kerrville 
Genealogical Society where she served on its board of directors and was the newsletter editor for 3 years. Shirley and 
Jim were members of the Kerrville United Methodist Church .

Survivors are her husband of 60 years, James Robert Webb, Sr., of Kerrville, daughter, Vicki Webb Hunter and 
husband, Robert, of Las Cruces, NM, and son, James Robert "Bob" Webb, Jr., of Corpus Christi , TX . Also surviving 
are her sister, Dorothy E. Douglas of Fort Worth, Texas, and grandsons, David Hunter and wife, Trisha, of Las Cruces, 
NM, Christopher Hunter and wife, Marit, of Kerrville, and granddaughter Eileen Hunter Caldwell and husband, Jake, of 
Roswell, NM. Shirley is survived by 3 precious great granddaughters, Jacie Caldwell, Emma Hunter and Devyn Hunter.
