Ann ROSS

Mrs. Ann O'HANLON ROSS born in Edgeworthtown, County Longford, Ireland in 1819. She married Mr. ROSS in New York after they both arrived from Ireland. They sailed to Galveston and joined a wagon train bound for California. Indians attacked the wagon train at the Pecos River, those on the east side of the Pecos came back to Ft. Clark for protection.

They had 3 children - Ed Ross, Annie Ross (m 1874 to Mr. F. S. Fritter) and Virginia Ross (never married).

August MENDEKE

Mayor MENDEKE's grandfather was one of the earliest residents of Brackettville. He and Mr. O. B. BRACKETT came to Brackettville together at its beginning to file claims for property in the townsite. As they were entering the area a wheel fell of the coach. The coach collapsed and grandfather Mendeke's leg was broken. He told Mr. Brackett to leave him and run on to the land office to file their claims as the deadline was near. Mr. Brackett made it in time and the deeds were issued.

The FRITTER Family

Frank Stafford Fielding FRITTER b. February 3, 1827, Stafford, VA son of Susan and Augustus FRITTER, French immigrants. Came to Brackettville in 1867 and became Sheriff of Kinney County in 1884. Married Annie ROSS in 1874. Seven children were born to this couple, they were: John, Hancock, Edward, Sam, Dan, Pat and a daughter Susie.

The BALLANTYNE Family

James Burn BALLANTYNE and his future wife came to Texas aboard the "John Garrow" which left Liverpol England on September 2, 1850. James was born August 13, 1829 in Edinburg Scotland. He was the second son of William BALLANTYNE, and Margaret Clapham BURN. Margaret was born June 28, 1828 in London, the youngest child of Joseph and Sara Ewings MARTIN.

They were married May 31, 1852 by Rev. B. WALTERS,, Hill County Texas. There were eight children born to them, they were: Margaret Jane, William Joseph, James Martin, Agnes, Robert Campbell, Helen Roy, Frances Josephine, and Walter Scott.

The HIMES Family

Daniel Francis HIMES was born in Rhode Island in 1849 to Daniel B. and Betsy A. CARPENTER HIMES. He married Helen Roy BALLANTYNE March 18, 1883. Two children were born to this union, they were: daughter Frances and son Herbert.

The Fred Walter DUDLEY Family

Fred Walter Dudley, b. March 26, 1854 in Hanover, New Hampshire, to Jonathan and Minerva ARMSTRONG DUDLEY. Fred married Frances Josephine BALLANTYNE and to this union were born 3 daughters, they were: Edith Minerva, Jessie Helen, and Charlotte.

Claron Augustus WINDUS Family Claron Augustus WINDUS b. Jonesville, WI January 10, 1850. Married Agnes Margaret BALLANTYNE and to this union were born 3 daughters who were: Agnes Margaret, Lucy Amy and Cora Edith. All 3 daughters became teachers.

VELTMANN

Henry J. VELTMANN, b. June 21, 1835 in Lingen, Germany (then the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany). He left Germany with his family from the Port of Bremerhaven on board a ship called the "Talisman". It took 75 days to reach Galveston and the arrival date was on December 25, 1846. Married to Anna BRADEN July 23, 1860 daughter of Capt. Ed Braden owner of the Braden Hotel on Market St. in San Antonio. He moved to Brackettville in 1877. He died July 31, 1917 and was survived by his daughter Mrs. Elizabeth BALLANTYNE and four sons, Joseph, Henry Jr., Willie and Arthur.

James CORNELL

James CORNELL Sr. was born in England, he married Suzanna HUTCHISON and to this union were born 4 daughters, they were: Lizzie, Mary, Susie, and Sadie and one son James.

Sam HUTCHISON Family

Sam Houston HUTCHISON married Sara Matilda MCGOWAN, she was born on Mustang Island. To this union were born 5 children, they were: one son Emmett, four daughters Ruth, Sally, Pearl, and Ruby Mae.

The Henry Clay HUNT Family

Henry Clay HUNT arrived in Brackettville in 1890 as a US Marshall, married Mary Cornell in 1892. There were 5 children born to this couple, they were: Milton Tillman, Henry Clay, Jr., Bryan, Guy, and Mamie Frank.

The BROOKS Family

Al Brooks family was born in Kinney County in 1877. Married to Betty HOUSTON WILLIAMS and they had 3 daughters and 2 sons.

The SEARGEANT Family

Oscar F. SEARGEANT b. August 27, 1864 in Fayette County. He arrived in Spofford, Kinney County in 1890. Oscar married Susie CORNELL and to this union 4 children were born. They were: Blanche, Albert J., Dewey and Marjorie.

The ANDERSON Family

George A. ANDERSON married Susan Arabelle MASON in 1875 to this union were born: Honor Glint, Werther A., Guess, Lurline, Mable, Morrell, Thanks, Hope, Myrtle, and Content.

The DOOLEY Family

John David DOOLEY married a woman named MICHOT, she was born in Belgium of French parentage in 1853. They came to Indianola TX and settled in Long Mott by accident after a storm at sea blew their ship off course. They moved west to Kinney County due to Mr. DOOLEY suffering from Asthma. They had a number of children, Jules, William D., Mary, Emma, and John. There were other children but they are not mentioned in this book.

The THURMAN Family

The THURMAN family came to Kickapoo in Kinney County in 1881. Jess THURMAN married Lillie Mae COX and they had two sons and five daughters: Walter, Lindon, Rose, Ima, Mattie, Adeline, Bess , Uralee, and Jackie.

The POSTELL Family

Albert POSTELL married Margaret (Ginnie) COX to this union were born a number of children.
