Captain Vines Dies At Home
Captain John M. Vines died at his home on Polk Street, Saturday at 2 p.m., he was 75 year old. Captain Vines was an old citizen of Jefferson. He served in the Civil War and was sheriff of Marion some 35 years ago. He leaves two sons, Bud Vines of Dallas and Joe Vines of Chicasha, Oklahoma; two grandsons, , Shep and Murph Vines and their sister Miss Dora. The funeral was held from the residence of J. O. Jackson, Jr. on Alley Street at 4 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. H. T. Perritte conducting the services, interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.
Note: He was born in 1844 in Alabama, he joined the Lone Rangers CSA 1861 and was discharged 1865 Rank of Farrier, served as sheriff and tax collector for Marion County 1874 - 1876. In April 1877 sent as agent of State of Texas to bring Abe Rothschild back to Jefferson from Ohio to stand trial for the murder of "Diamond" Bessie Moore. [One of the sensational murder trials of the 19th century.]

Professor Vinson Passes Away Tuesday
Professor R. W. Vinson died Tuesday, June 29th after a lingering illness at his home on Broadway. Professor Vinson was an educator of ability and had taught school in Jefferson for more than 30 years. He was a Confederate and a member of General Sick Taylor Camp UCV. He leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. F. J. Williams of El Paso and Douglas Vinson of New Orleans. The funeral was held at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon and services were conducted by Rev. J. L. Dawson.
Note: Only date on stone is death date. Wife, Sophia GIBBS Vinson 21 October 1847 - 01 September 1937 Both are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery. Several of their children are buried beside them.
