Collegeport Cemetery

The town of Collegeport was founded in 1908, and this site was used as a cemetery for area residents. Early burials include those of Elizabeth Palmer and Harry Sundstrom. Several burials are marked by Roman numerals set into shell concrete. The King's Daughters organization maintained the cemetery from 1921 to 1958, when the Collegeport Cemetery Association was formed. In 1961, Hurricane Carla destroyed most of the cemetery records. Members of the community have always tended the burial ground, from men in the early days digging the graves to those funding operation and maintenance projects today.

Directions: Turn on FM 1095 at El Maton (Tidehaven School) and continue to the Collegeport area. Turn right on Old River Road and proceed about a mile to a gate. The cemetery is located in the area near the bay. Be sure to close the gate going in and leaving unless you want to round up cows before you leave!

Unmarked Graves

The earliest existing list of Collegeport burials was compiled by L. E. Liggett in the late 1920s. Of the 24 names on the list, 13 are numbered. Those 13 names are believed to correspond with stones in the cemetery that have only a Roman numeral as an inscription. The following list includes all of the 13 names as well as a number 14 which was not on the original list.
