Dr. Paul Leonard Brewer
By the Brewer Family

Paul L. Brewer, M. D., was born in Bronte, Texas, on January 26, 1912, to Mary Simpson Brewer and Robert Lee Brewer. His family moved to Rogers, Arkansas, where Paul received his grade school education. He received his B. S. degree from the University of Arkansas in 1935; he was valedictorian of his class and a member of Phi Beta Pi, a national honorary fraternity. He received his medical degree from Arkansas in 1938. Dr. Brewer served a twelve-month residency at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1940, and he was supervisor of pediatric residents at Mercy Hospital for twenty-seven months until 1944. He received his license to practice medicine in Arkansas on June 30, 1940, and his Texas license on November 15, 1944.

While Dr. Brewer was supervisor of pediatric residents at Mercy Hospital, he met Quinta Nahrendorf, a nursing supervisor. They were married on July 4, 1941. During the summers while Paul was in medical school, he worked for his uncle and aunt, Paris and Lily Brewer Smith, at the Matagorda Pharmacy. It was this experience that helped him decide to begin his practice in Bay City. In November, 1944, the couple moved to Bay City where Dr. Brewer became the first pediatrician in Matagorda County. He and Dr. H. H. Loos shared offices which were on the second floor of the Matagorda Pharmacy building. Dr. Brewer later moved to offices situated above the old Tribune Building with Dr. Charles Shoultz. In 1948 the MBMS Clinic was built across the street from Matagorda General Hospital at 1100 Avenue G. The doctors associated in this clinic were H. C. Matthes, Paul Brewer, Hugh Mangum, and Charles Shoultz.

Dr. and Mrs. Brewer had three children, Paula Brewer McBride, Jennifer Brewer Ehlers, and the Reverend Hugh W. Brewer, a Lutheran minister. They have four grandchildren, Kimberly McBride, twins Stuart and Kirk McBride, and Kyle Brewer. There are also three step-grandchildren, Erin, Zachary, and Colin Ehlers.

Dr. Brewer has a record number of "firsts" to his credit. He was the first pediatrician in Matagorda County, the first chief of staff of Matagorda General Hospital, and the first physician to care for the mentally ill and substance abuse patients when he became the consulting physician for the Matagorda County Mental Health Clinic on June 10, 1970. He also served for many years as county health doctor. Dr. Brewer has been active in the Trl-County Medical Association (Matagorda, Wharton, and Jackson counties) and, later, the Matagorda County Medical Association.

The Brewers are members of the St. Peter Lutheran Church where Dr. Brewer has served on the church council and two terms as president of the congregation. His activities include membership in both the  Junior and Senior Chambers of Commerce. He was a thirty-year member of the Rotary Club where he served two terms as vice-president. He and Quinta were active in PTA, the Band Parents Club, and the March of Dimes. While his two daughters attended Texas Lutheran College, Seguin, Dr. Brewer served on the board of trustees of the college.

Paula received her bachelors degree from Texas Lutheran and a bachelors in medical technoloY from Duke University. She received her masters in special education from Incarnate Word, San Antonio. Jennifer received her bachelors in education from Texas Lutheran and her masters in counseling from North Texas State University. Hugh graduated with a bachelors degree from Texas A&M University where he was a member of the marching band; Paul and Quinta seldom missed a home football game during those four years. In 1980 Hugh received his Master of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Seminary; he was ordained on July 27, 1980, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bay city.

On January 29, 1981, Dr. Brewer was awarded the coveted outstanding Man of the Year Award presented at the 58th Annual Bay City Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. In presenting the award on behalf on the chamber, Haskell Simon described Paul Brewer as a "very happy person whose happiness in contagious."
