Dr. Edwin Arnold Jacobs, an early settler of Kaufman County who came in 1854, was born December 8, 1811 in Marlboro, Vermont and died July 27, 1902 in Hamilton County, Texas. He was the youngest of twelve children and at the age of sixteen he went to New York City to study medicine. In 1832 Dr. Jacobs married Sarah Ann Cowed and shortly after this marriage they started to the west. Their first son, John Clark, was born May 4, 1835 in Newark, Ohio. Some information indicates they lived for a time in Kentucky.

Dr. Jacobs moved his family to Independence County, Arkansas by 1842 where his wife died March 20, 1848. Edwin married his second wife, Susannah Jane Robinson, on January 11, 1849. They came to Texas in 1853 and the following year settled in the area of Kaufman County that later became Rockwall County. Dr. Jacobs was also a Justice of the Peace and many of the early deed records filed in the Kaufman County Court House were witnessed by Dr. Edwin Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs was a member of the Christian Church in Rockwall. This family remained in Kaufman County until about 1870 when they moved to Matagorda County, Texas.

About 1880 Dr. Jacobs moved to Garland, Dallas County, Texas and stayed for a short time before moving to Hamilton County, Texas where he lived the remainder of his life.

Children of Edwin and Sarah Jacobs:
1. John Clark Jacobs, born May 4, 1835 and died January 8, 1923. Married Ruth Ann Mills of Rockwall, Texas on June 25, 1859.
2. Sarah M. Jacobs, born January 8, 1837 and died January 15, 1916. Married Rev. E. V. Butler of Kaufman County on April 26, 1855.
3. Amanda M. Jacobs, born January 10, 1839.
4. Caroline M. Jacobs, born February 16, 1842. Married Tom Mills in May, 1866.
5. Edward A. Jacobs, born December 17, 1845 and died February 28, 1907. Married (first) Catherine Osterhoudt, (second) Annabell Troop and (third) Margaret Daniels.

Children of Edwin and Susannah Jacobs:
Amanda J., born March 22, 1850.
Charles Frederick, born October 18, 1855 in Rockwall, and married Serepta Martha Mills of Rockwall on January 10, 1876.
Mary C., born February 15, 1857 and died September 16, 1875. Married William Mitchell in October, 1872.
George W., born July 8, 1859 and died September 16, 1875.
Isaac Augustus, born January 9, 1862 and died April 27, 1934. Married (first) Charlotta B. Hamton on November 24, 1881 and (second) Lucy E. Henderson on August 11, 1892.
Edwin Riley, born February 10, 1864 and died February 2, 1930. Married Mary Lizzie Giles on April 28, 1885.
Emily Bell, born July 28, 1866.

Two of Dr. Jacobs' sons were in the Civil War. John Clark served with the Texas Cavalry and Edward served with the Vermont Infantry.

Ancestors of Dr. Edwin A. Jacobs were:
1. Nicholas Jacobs, immigrant ancestor, was born in Hanover, England, and came to Massachusetts on June 15, 1633. He married Mary Gilman. Nicholas died June 5, 1657.
2. Joseph Jacobs was born May 1, 1640 and died February 9, 1708. Married Hannah Bosworth.
3. Nathaniel Jacobs was born June 29, 1683 and died February 22, 1772. Married Mercy Whitman
4. Benjamin Jacobs was born April 26, 1719 and married Dorothy Arnold.
5. Nathan Jacobs was born June 21, 1762 and died May 4, 1846. Married Sarah Clark.
6. Edwin Arnold Jacobs.

Dr. Jacobs received a Bible from his mother's family which was printed by the Oxford Press, London, England in 1795. This Bible is now in the possession of Ross Lynn Jacobs of Dallas, Texas.
