Dr. John Calhorda Perry

Dr. John Calhorda Perry was born October 26, 1818, in North Carolina. He was baptized in Christ Church on October 8, 1850. He died of consumption on October 12/13, 1861, and was buried in Matagorda. His funeral services were held by Christ Church. The entry in the Christ Church register stated that Dr. Perry died “in his 43rd year, of consumption.” It said that his illness was protracted and very painful, which he bore with unvaried patience and meek resignation. He received more than once the Holy Communion to his great benefit, and died in the faith and fear of God, greatly lamented by all his friends.

Dr. Perry married Rebecca Fisher, daughter of Samuel Rhoads Fisher and Ann Pleasants Fisher on October 3, 1850. She was born July 6, 1830, in Pennsylvania and baptized in Christ Church on December 29, 1848. Rebecca died in Matagorda’s yellow fever epidemic on September 28, 1862, at the age of thirty-two.

Dr. Perry had a large practice as a doctor in Matagorda. Both he and Rebecca were leaders in Christ Church. They had four children. William Bechincornt Perry was born December 23, 1851, and died April 19, 1853; Ann Fisher Perry was born February 4, 1854; Elizabeth W. Perry was born June 24, 1857; and Louise Hancock Perry was born June 6, 1859.
