Dr. John W. Reed

Dr. John W. Reed was born in Tennessee, March 15, 1850, and came to Texas in 1872. Dr. Reed was a cowboy in the West Texas hills and is said to have helped track down the Indian chief, Geronimo. Dr. Reed and Elizabeth Tomerlin were married in Medina County in 1877. He practiced medicine in Medina and Frio counties, then moved to Colorado County in 1894.

In addition to his services as a railroad physician for fourteen years, he was a member of the Texas Medical Association. Her served as a volunteer in the medical corps of the army during World War I.

Dr. Reed came to Matagorda County and Bay City soon after its founding in 1894. In 1898 he became a member of the Bay City Masonic Lodge #865. Dr. Reed died in March, 1942, and was buried in Cedarvale Cemetery. His children were Mattie Reed Johnson, Mrs. L. N. Miller, Dempson Reed and George Reed.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Dr. John W. Reed, 91, pioneer physician, who died here early Saturday morning.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. J. W. Reed; two daughters, Mrs. Mattie Johnson of Eagle Lake and Mrs. L. N. Miller of Bay City; two sons, Dempson Reed of Houston and George Reed of Bay City.

Dr. Reed would have been 92 Sunday. He was born in Tennessee on March 15, 1850. Coming to Texas in 1872, Dr. Reed was a cowboy in the West Texas hills and is said to have helped track down the Indian Chief, Geronimo.

Dr. Reed and Miss Elizabeth Tomerlin were married in 1877 in Medina County. He practiced medicine in Medina and Frio Counties, and moved to Colorado County in 1894.

In addition to service as a railroad physician for fourteen years, he was a member of the Texas Medical Association since 1907. He served as volunteer in the medical corps in the Army during the World War.

Masonic services were conducted for Dr. Reed, who had been a member of the lodge since 1989. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers. The Reverends Ernest R. Deutsch and Marvin Vance officiated at the funeral.
