Parker Families of Mississippi and Texas

Brothers, Thomas Henderson "Tom" Parker and James Talton Parker were the sons of John P. Parker (bc 1867 Mississippi - d 1930 Tishomingo, Tishomingo, Mississippi) and Frances Emmaline "Emma" Wright Parker (b April 8, 1860 Tishomingo, Tishomingo, Mississippi - d after 1899). They moved in Matagorda County, Texas about 1914. By 1919, they were joined by their half-brother, Edwin Earl Parker Sr., who was the son of John P. Parker and Addie/Adline L. Slack Parker (b c Apr 1867 Tennessee - d 1930 Tishomingo, Tishomingo, Mississippi).

Thomas Henderson "Tom" Parker & Emma Alice Pounds Parker

Thomas Henderson "Tom" Parker was born October 20, 1882 in Mississippi. He married Emma Alice Pounds who was born October 23, 1886. She was born in Mississippi and was the daughter of Ben F. Pounds and Mary Ann Dodd Pounds.

Tom and Emma's children were Vardaman b c 1904, Grace Ethel b 1908, Dayton Lee b 1910, John Dalton b 1912, Cora Lois b 1914 and Howard b 1918.

Tom and Emma's family moved to Texas circa 1912. They were living in Matagorda County when enumerated on the 1920 census.

Grace, Dayton, Dalton and Lois were attending school in Collegeport in 1923 as evidenced by the school census slips below and in 1927, they were attending school at Prairie Center. By 1927, Howard was attending school with Dayton, Dalton and Cora Lois. The children did not appear in the school censuses for 1928 and 1929, but reappeared 1930-1934.

Tom and Emma eventually moved to Texas City, Galveston County, Texas. Tom died on September 20, 1953 and Emma on November 27, 1962. They were buried at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.

James Talton Parker & Mary Lou Gallimore Parker

James Talton Parker was born December 22, 1886 in Mississippi. He married Mary Lou Gallimore who was the daughter of Joseph Bailey Gallimore and Martha Elizabeth Sherring. The family of James and Mary Parker moved to Texas circa 1914. On November 6, 1915, James wrote a postcard to his younger half-brother, Earl, who was still living in Tishomingo, Tishomingo County, Mississippi.

James and Mary's children were Nedra b 1908, Bettie Frances b 1912, June Rose b 1916, Mary Lou b 1919, James T, Jr. b 1921, Emma L. b c 1924 and Jo Bernice b c 1926.

James and Mary's family were enumerated on the 1920 Matagorda County census in the Collegeport area where James was a general farmer.

James and Mary's children attended the Collegeport school in 1923 and their school census slips appear below. They attended the Blessing school 1927 - 1929.

In 1930, the family was enumerated in the Bexar County census and Mary Lou's father, Joseph B. Gallimore was living with them.

James died in Galveston on January 8, 1947 and was buried at Oleander Cemetery in Galveston. Mary Lou died after James.

Edwin Earl Parker & Ruth Esther Jennings Parker

Ruth Jennings Parker and Edwin Earl Parker, Sr.

Edwin Earl Parker was born August 1, 1891 in Burnt Mills, Mississippi.

Edwin Earl "Earl" married Ruth Esther Jennings (b July 29, 1903 Fredonia, Mason, Texas - d October 19, 1993 La Marque, Galveston, Texas) daughter of John Marshall Jennings and Ida Belle Hill Jennings. They were married in Collegeport, Matagorda County on April 6, 1919.


Mr. Earl Parker and Miss Ruth Jennings, both of Collegeport, were married Sunday evening at the home of Rev. and Mrs. M. A. Travis, the Rev. Travis officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Parker will make their home near Collegeport.

Earl was listed as a general farmer on the January 1920 Matagorda County census. They didn't stay in Matagorda County very long. Their first child, Rosamond, was born in September 1920 in Kingsville, Kleberg County, Texas. Their other children, Earlene, Ernestine, Junell, Edwin Earl, James Marshall, Ruth Dale and Franklin Randolph were born in McCulloch County, Texas.

In 1930 they were living on Coleman Road in McCulloch County and Earl was farming.  In 1940, they were living on Tenth Street in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas where Earl was working as a fireman at a cotton compress.

Earl died January 23, 1953 in Galveston, Texas.. Ruth remarried to Vestal E. "Dave" Davidson. She died October 19, 1993 in Texas City. She was buried at Hayes Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.
