Freda Johanna (Behmer) Culver

December 15, 1891 - July 31, 1961

Freda and her husband Harry Arrans Culver (March 19, 1889 - March 25, 1961) are buried at Matagorda Cemetery near their son Private Lawrence James Culver (August 3, 1926 - May 4, 1945), United States Army who was killed in action in Germany.  At the time of his death his family lived in Wadsworth, Texas, and he was the first WWII death from the Wadsworth Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish.

   

Nora Catherine (Duke) Dunbar

January 24, 1897 - February 12, 1944

Nora and her husband Robert Boyd Dunbar (April 4, 1917 - September 23, 1964) are buried in Matagorda Cemetery.  Their son Private First Class Boyd Scott Dunbar (July 25, 1919 - June 26, 1944), United States Army was killed in action in France and was first buried at St. Lo, France. His remains were later returned to Matagorda for burial.  At the time of his death his family was living in Matagorda.

   

Belle (Smith) Lawhon

October 24, 1897 - April 23, 1969

Belle and her husband Clifford Eugene Lawhon (September 24, 1894-January 7, 1941) are buried at Matagorda Cemetery. Their son Flight Officer Joseph Beverly Lawhon (April 7, 1923 - July 9, 1945), United States Army Air Forces was killed when his plane crashed into the sea near Suwanose Island, Ruyukia Islands in the Western Pacific due to extreme weather turbulance. His remains were not recovered.  He is also survived by his wife Lillie (Richers) {Lawhon} Carr and son Joseph. He is listed on the tablets of the missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. A memorial marker for Joseph has been placed at the foot of the graves of his parents.

   

Francisca (Cuellar) Rodriguez

September 11, 1909 - November 15, 1938

Francisca is buried in Matagorda Cemetery, Section A. Her husband, Bernabe Rodriguez (June 11, 1895 - May 26, 1965), moved to South Texas after his retirement.  He is buried at Cementerio La Piedad, McAllen, Texas. Their son, Private First Class Ruben Cuellar Rodriguez (January 10, 1931 - March 17, 1951) United States Marine Corps was reinterred in Section 8, Row 15 of Cedarvale Cemetery on September 27, 1951. He was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division and was killed in action in Korea . At the time of his death his father was living in New Gulf, Wharton County, Texas. Though a Wharton County casualty, we are honored  to include him with our Matagorda County casualties.

   

Caroline L. (Yeamans) Williams

April 9, 1852 - December 14, 1919

Caroline and her husband James Francis Williams (July 12, 1849 – November 30, 1938) are buried at Matagorda Cemetery near their son (Private) John May Williams (January 18, 1891 – October 21, 1918) (U.S. Army) who died of the Spanish Flu during WWI.

   

Pauline (Bunk) Yeamans

June 19, 1869 - January 3, 1936

Pauline and her husband Phillip Yeamans, Sr. (July 21, 1845 - September 25, 1931) are buried at Matagorda Cemetery near their son Private First Class Joseph “Joe” Yeamans (February 10, 1898 - October 9, 1918), United States Army who was killed in action in France while on a reconnaissance mission. After taking cover in a fox hole he was mortally wounded when he was struck in the head by shrapnel. He was first buried in France then brought home for re-burial in the Matagorda Cemetery. At the time of his death his family lived in Matagorda.
