J. C. Carrington was first elected County Surveyor of Matagorda
County in 1896. Mr. Carrington's survey
crews would travel by mule team to a location and set up their camp.
They slept in tents, and had a chuck wagon where cook, "Old Matt,"
prepared their meals.
