BAY CITY [Matagorda County, TX] - Adela Sosa Garcia, 78, of Bay City, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002. She was born June 17, 1923, in Edna, to the late Juan and Adela Mederano Sosa.

Survivors: sons, Marcos Gonzales and Richard Gonzales, both of Bay City, Pete Gonzales of San Antonio and Joe Gonzales of Wharton; brothers, Moses Sosa of Houston and Isaac Sosa of Bay City; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Francisco Garcia; sisters, Josefina Gonzales and Santos Benavides; and brother, Esiquel Sosa.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Saul Garcia officiating.

Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Marcie Clark Garner, Sr.
(October 1, 1932 - October 22, 2012)

Marcie Clark (Hup) Garner, 80, of Houston, Texas, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 22, 2012. Clark was born October 1, 1932, in Grapps Bluff, Louisiana, to the late Brady Roy and JoAnn Clark Garner. Clark graduated from Rodessa High School in 1952. He attended La. Tech on a football scholarship and was a United States Army veteran, earning the rank of sergeant as a military policeman during the Korean War. Clark retired in 1997, after almost 40 years with BJ Services, where he progressed from trainee to regional manager during his career. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed life and spending time with family and friends.

Clark was preceded in death by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Shelby Jean Garner ; and his adoring grandson, Andrew Monroe Garner. He is survived by his loving family: son, Richard Monroe and wife, Catherine; son, Marcie Clark, Jr. and wife, JoAnn; daughter, Judith Lynn Lebel and husband, Bobby; brother, Brady Roy, Jr., and wife, Mary; sister, Margie JoAnn Garner; sister, Hazel Lola Roton; sister-in-law, Marian Wilson; brother-in-law, Johnny Sykes; aunt and dear friend, Waymel Smith; special cousin, Edris Jorgerson; grandchildren: Andy Frederic, Josh, Sean, and Caitlin Garner; “adopted” grandchildren Chris Green and Brad Bivens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon Friday, October 26, 2012 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 26, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

BAY CITY - Honorio Luna Garza, 64, of Bay City, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002.

He was born Dec. 30, 1937, in San Perletas, to the late Paulino and Vinenta Luna Garza. He was a mechanic.

Survivors: wife, Tomasita Garza; daughter, Zoraida Manciaz of Bay City; sons, Martin Garza and Horacio Garza, both of Bay City; sisters, Eva de la Santos of Bay City, Maria Aguillon and Fermina Aguilar, both of Robstown, Petra Jasso of Sweetwater and Epifania Olivarez of Beeville; brother, Paulino Garza Jr. of Bay City; and six grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents; and brother, Demetrio Domingo Garza.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Saul Garcia officiating.

Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Eva Gassen Hancock

Eva Gassen Hancock, 73, of Bay City died July 2, 2004 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. She came to this earth on June 26, 1931 in Bay City. She was the first child born to the late George Thomas and Gladys Ocie Scott Jones.

Eva attended Jefferson Davis High School in Bay City. After graduating with the class of 1948, she attended the Business College in Houston. After college she took a secretarial position with Gulf Tractor and Equipment Co. in Houston. A few years later, missing her hometown and friends, she moved back to Bay City where she was employed with Bay City Auto and Sales as a secretary and bookkeeper. She held this position until her marriage in 1950 to Bart P. Gassen, who was then employed with W. O. Salter Implements. Bart and Eva had a wonderful life together for 36 year until his death in 1986. After her life with Bart, and the children were grown, another man became special to her; she was married a second time to Wallace Hancock on October 30, 1993.

Eva was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed volunteering her time with the Pink Ladies Auxiliary and on March 8, 2004 was awarded a certificate recognizing her for 1,250 hours of volunteer work.

Survivors include: husband Wallace Hancock of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Edwin Klaiber of Sweeny; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Linda J. Gassen of Richwood, Larry and Regina Gassen of Resaca, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Linda F. Gassen of Richwood; brother, Roy Lee Jones of Wharton, grandchildren, Michael Gassen, Jr. and wife Monica of Pflugerville, Anthony Klaiber of Grapevine, Angela Blacklock and husband Ryan of Houston, Larry Gassen Jr. and wife Kate of Bay City, Amie Gassen of El Campo, and Leslie Gassen of Van Vleck; great-grandchildren, Taylor Gassen and Destany Zuniga; step-children, Mary Merritt and husband Lester of Wichita Falls, Texas, Scott Hancock of Houston, step-granddaughters, Ashley and Cristie Merritt of Wichita Falls, Texas; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Bart Gassen; a baby brother, Fred Edward Jones in 1943; her son, Thomas Eugene Gassen in 2003; and a step-son Randy Hancock in 1997.

A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, and the funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Klaiber, Michael Gassen Jr., Larry Gassen Jr,. Steven Jones, Randy Morgan, and David Lyle. Honorary pallbearers will be Lester Merritt, Alcie Lee Jones, Roger Jones, Richard Lyle, Terry Lyle Arthur and Robert Koym.

Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross School Foundation or Matagorda General Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary.

Ida Frances Gassen

Ida Frances Gassen, 90, of Missouri City, TX, and a long time resident of Bay City, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002. The daughter of William and Josephine Reif Hipp, was born January 21, 1912 in Odin, KA.

Mrs. Gassen was preceded in death by her husband of thirty one years, B.J. Gassen.

Survivors include: daughters, Rosemary Newlin of Houston, and Regina Eakin and her husband Willie of Kingwood, TX; sister, Hattie Hipp of Great Bend, KA; and grandchildren, Ron Newlin of Tallahassee, FL, and Trey, Tyler and Jenny Eakin of Kingwood, TX.

Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2002 in the Chapel of Earthman Funeral Directors Southwest, 12555 South Kirkwood in Stafford with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2-002 at St. Albert Trepani Catholic Church, 11027 South Gessner Drive, with the Rev. John Strasser, celebrant.

Rite of Committal will follow at 2:30 p.m. Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Thomas Eugene Gassen

Thomas Eugene Gassen, of Richwood, Texas, was the third child born to Bart and Eva Gassen on August 20, 1956 in Bay City, Texas.

He left his family and friends to be with his Lord and Savior on March 22, 2003. Tommy was a true servant of God and showed his love for the Lord each and every day of his life. Heaven is welcoming him with open arms.

Tommy was a graduate of Bay City High School and for a number of years helped with the family farming operation. For the past 22 years, he was employed as an operator and most recently as the LDAR Coordinator for Chevron Phillips in Sweeny. He owned Gassen Dozer Works and created works of art from raw land for many residents of Brazoria and Matagorda County. He was very devoted to his family and friends, enjoyed all aspects of life and never let grass grow under his feet. He was always the first to volunteer for whatever needed to be done, and with his take charge attitude, always got the job done. He was very dedicated to his work at New Beginnings Community Church and the Cradle of Texas Emmaus Community. His beautiful voice blessed everyone who heard him sing his songs of praise to the Lord. His death left a void in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bart Gassen, maternal grandparents, George and Gladys Jones, paternal grandparents Theodore and Frances Gassen and one stepbrother, Randy Hancock.

Tommy leaves behind a wife of 12 years, Linda Gassen of Richwood; one daughter, Leslie Gassen of Van Vleck; his mother, Eva and step-father Wallace Hancock of Bay City; sister, Nancy Klaiber and her husband, Edwin of Sweeny; brother, Mike Gassen and his wife, Linda of Richwood; brother, Larry Gassen and wife Regina of Resaca, Georgia; one granddaughter, Destany Zuniga of Van Vleck; two step-sons, Jeff Patterson and his wife Susie of Richwood and Scott Patterson and wife, Theresa of Lake Jackson; step-grandchildren, Blake, Ashleigh, Zachary, Tori, Kristen and Abigail Patterson; a step-sister, Mary Merritt and her husband, Lester, of Wichita Falls and several aunts, uncles, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Those who wished to pay their last respects to Tommy and visit the family did so from 5:30 to 8:30 on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson.

Funeral services will be at New Beginnings Community Church on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 10 a.m. Burial following the service will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Michael Gassen, Jr., Tony Klaiber, Larry Gassen, Jr., step-grandson, Blake Patterson, brother-in-law Don Reid and a life-long friend, Randy Morgan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Gassen, Sr., Larry Gassen, Sr., Edwin Klaiber, Wallace Hancock, Jeff Patterson, Scott Patterson, Joe Rieger, Randy Rieger and Clifford Smith.

Frances H. Gavender

Frances Hatchett Gavender, 87, of Wadsworth, TX passed away Saturday, October 25, 2003 in Houston, TX. She was born January 15, 1916 in Wadsworth, TX to Frank E. Hatchett and Rose Ryman Hatchett. She was a graduate of Gulf High School and a lifelong resident of Matagorda County.

She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law: Eloise & L.W. Eitelbach of Houston; by her sons & daughter-in-law: Ronald Gavender of Selkirk and Melvin & Rosalie Gavender of Selkirk; by her sister: Ruth Swafford of Wharton; by her grandchildren: Karen Schelsteder & husband Mike, Eric Gavender & wife Linda, Erin, Brooke & Megan Eitelbach; and by her great grandchildren: Marissa & Colby Gavender, Alyssa & Michael Schelsteder.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Isabelle Ruth Eidlebach Gernand, 77, of Bay City, died March 11, 2001 at Hermann Hospital in Houston. She was born December 19, 1923 in Wadsworth, Texas to the late Willie J. and Pauline Mary Gest Eidlebach. Mrs. Gernand was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a life long resident of the Bay City area, and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #2438. She married Woodrow Joseph Gernand, Sr. on May 21, 1940 in Bay City. She and her late husband, Woodrow, owned and operated the Gernand Builders Supply in Bay City.

Survivors include: four daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and Jim Woracheck, and Patty and Jimmy Guy Fortenberry all of Bay City, Nancy and Dell Ayers of Houston and Barbara and Tony Nemec of El Campo; son and daughter-in-law, Woodrow Joseph, Jr. and Toni Gernand of Bay City; sisters, Evelyn Eidlebach and Virginia Klingaman both of Bay City, Katherine White and her husband Marshall of Vancouver, Wash., Wilma "Wickie" Jennings of Del Rio, Texas; brother, Ross and his wife Catherine, Arthur and his wife Carin and Burris Eidlebach all of Bay City; nine grandchildren, Cindy and David Luedecke, Joey McGuirt, Jessica and Mike Estlinbaum, Debbie and Barrett Franz, and Jason Gernand all of Bay City, Rebecca Ayers and Kimberly Gernand both of Houston, Woodrow J. Gernand, III of Sargent and Tony and Leslie Nemec of Las Vegas, Nev., 10 great grandchildren, Jordan Hipps, Rachel and Stephen Luedecke, Drew and Matthew Estlinbaum, Coleman and Saundic Franz all of Bay City, Darian Gernand, Azia and Kaia Franklin all of Houston. She was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow Joseph Gernand Sr., October 12, 1996; sisters, Joyce Smith, Emily Parks and Gertrude Harrison; and by brothers C. O. "Bundy" and Earl Eidlebach.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be: Brad Nauman, Tom Griffith, Tom Rodgers, Ross Eidlebach, Jr., Lee Bossley, and Will Eidlebach.
