FRANCIS JOSEPH "F. J."
MILBERGER
(March 11, 1915 - June 4, 2009)
BAY CITY - Francis Joseph "F. J."
Milberger was born March 11, 1915, in Bryan, to Vincent and Mary
Milberger. His father, Vincent, arrived by boat in Galveston from
Prussia around 1890. Mary Hebron, from Bruno, Czechoslovakia, his
future wife, just happened to be on the same boat. They were married
and bought a farm in East Bernard, and finally moved to a 70-acre
farm in Bryan, where F. J. was born. His father worked as a gardener
at Texas A&M. When F. J. was seven years of age his father passed
away.
After graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1934, F. J.
went to work as a bookkeeper at the Texas Company Bulk Plant in
Matagorda County. Then in 1940, F. J. met and married the love of
his life, Lillian Cole, a native of Matagorda County. To this unique
marriage lasting almost 70 years into the future, were born four
children: Mary Ellen, Wayne, Arthur, and Bryan.
Like many young American men, F. J. served in World War 2. Joining
the army in 1943, F. J. was attached to the ninth tactical division
of the Air Force. He took his basic training at Fort Still, Okla.,
went by train through Maryland, Virginia, to his Port close to New
York Harbor. From there F. J. was shipped in what he called 'an
England cattle ship' traveling three weeks across the Atlantic and
finally arrived in England. F. J. remembered the 'Buzz Bombs' near
London. D-Day plus 10, F. J. crossed the Channel to land in Normandy
on Omaha Beach. From D-Day plus 17, F. J. was stationed in the
European Theatre for the duration of the war at the headquarters of
General Omar M. Bradley. They constantly were on the move to dodge
the enemy. Serving in G-2 Intelligence, F. J. received the Legion of
Merit Award from General Bradley. For the most part, F. J. did
pretty well on the intelligence reports. He would type on the old
ribbon type machines, notwithstanding one typo error of adding an
extra -0- on a report sending 10 fighter planes out to destroy
German Artillery. Needless to say, with 100 planes, we won that
battle!
Upon returning home from the war to Bay City, F. J. observed St.
Augustine grass being removed from one residence and planted in a
new lawn at a different residence. After trying this himself and
running out of lawns to harvest sod from, F. J. did the math on the
numbers of square feet in an acre, and this was the beginning of a
new business and a new industry in Texas. F. J. planted four acres
of commercial sod and the rest is history. F. J.'s and Lillian's
four acres went on to become one of the largest and most successful
sod farms in the United States. Because F. J. was a pioneer in this
industry he had to invent many of the modern day techniques of the
industry. Always working with Texas A&M, whom F. . considered a
partner, F. J. initiated new land forming and cultural practices. F.
J. was constantly improving the purity and varieties resulting in
the implementation of the certified turf program in Texas. To meet
the challenges of the industry, F. J., one of the original founders
of the Texas Sod Producers Association, served as its first
president.
Although F. J. was by far the leader in his industry, he was better
known for his good-natured humor and unwavering generosity, whether
he was sharing new technology with a competitor or his compassion
for his employees. He was a resident of Matagorda County for the
past 75 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3070, and
a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
All this being said, F. J. could never have done this alone. The
love of his life, Lillian, was his partner in marriage, business,
and life for close to 70 years.
He is survived by his wife: Lillian Cole Milberger of Bay City; his
daughter: Mary Ellen Milberger of Bay City; his sons: Francis Wayne
Milberger and wife Carol of Kerrville, Arthur Joseph Milberger and
wife Sue of Bay City, and Bryan Michael Milberger and wife Theresa
of Bay City; by his grandchildren: Kathryn Clare McMillan Peebles,
Sara Christine Milberger Fruedensprung, Michelle Nicole Milberger,
Jeffrey Wayne Milberger, Regay Sue Milberger Hildreth, Lesley Nicole
Milberger Shoaf, Whitney Francis Milberger-Laird, Rachel Michelle
Milberger, Thomas Joseph Milberger, Ashley Lillian Milberger, Erin
Davis and Daniel Davis; and by his great-grandchildren: Julia Marie
Peebles, Taylor Leigh Peebles, John McMillan Peebles, David Scott
Peebles, and Audrey Sue Hildreth.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Vincent Joseph Milberger
and Mary Hebron Milberger.
The rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Taylor Bros. Funeral
Home. The funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 6, 2009 at
the Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek
officiating. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van
Vleck.

Dietrich, Nick Quintanilla, Victor Barrera, Pete Cervantes, Elpidio
Gonzalez, and Enrique Ochoa.
Honorary pallbearers will be R. M. Cole, W. L. Cole, Hadden Dietrich

D. P. Moore
October 6, 1852 -
November 7, 1928
After an illness of some weeks, D. P.
Moore, who for nearly fifty years has been one of the outstanding
figures in the commercial life and community upbuilding of this
section of Texas, passed away at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston on
November 7 and was laid to rest in Cedarvale Cemetery on November 9.
Born in Indianola, Texas, October 6,
1852, of sturdy Revolutionary War stock, Dolph Phineas Moore was the
son of Robert Baxter Moore and Mary Layton Moore, of Newark, New
Jersey.
Receiving his education in the private
schools of historic old Indianola, he early left that point to
locate in Matagorda county, coming at an early date and engaging in
the mercantile business at what was then known as Elliott's
Postoffice, just west of the present site of Bay City. Catching the
vision of the possibilities in Matagorda county for an aggressive
business man, Mr. Moore branched out into farming and stock raising,
in addition to his mercantile business, and acquired large holdings
over the county.
Having by his simplicity of manner and
clean cut methods of business firmly established himself in the
mercantile circles of the time. Mr. Moore removed from Elliott's
Postoffice to the old town of Matagorda, the then county seat, in
1891, there operating an exclusive mercantile business. He was
definitely interested in the development of Matagorda and did
everything possible to promote the community life there.
At this point in his life, Mrs. Moore
came into public service, being appointed by the court to serve out
the unexpired term of the then county treasurer, resigned, and at
the next regular election in 1892 was returned to office, filling
important posts until November 14, 1902. Such tenure of service in
one capacity speaks eloquently of his ability and fidelity to public
trust.
In 1894 Mr. Moore was a distinct factor
in the founding of the present town of Bay City, giving of his time,
his means, his lands that from out of the prairie should come a town
emphasizing the dual aims of its citizenry--the success of the
cattle business and the launching of the rice industry which have
opened our doors to the markets of the nation. He was the first
president of the Matagorda County Rice and Irrigation Company,
organized in 1899 and lived to see his faith in this section as a
great rice growing belt, vindicated.
The town of Bay City, from the middle of
Avenue G west lies on the lands of D. P. Moore. In assisting in the
founding of Bay City, Mr. Moore gave rights of way, unlimited time
and much money to the end that it should become a really happy place
to live, and was a leading spirit in the matter of getting the Cane
Belt, Southern Pacific and Brownsville railroads into the town. He
was active in getting bonuses, sites, etc., and gave liberally to
the cause himself.
[He] was always interested in anything
that touched the civic life and welfare of Bay City, giving
generously to all demands upon his sympathy and interest. Numerous
donations of lands have been made by Mr. Moore to the city among
which is Cedarvale Cemetery and its park.
In addition to his mercantile business
at Bay City, Palacios and Gulf, Mr. Moore was heavily interested in
many of the business enterprises of the town and county, at one time
serving as vice-president of the First National Bank of Bay City,
being one of its directors at the time of his death.
December 17, 1879, Mr. Moore married
Miss Louise Wendel, daughter of John and Elizabeth Wendel, now
deceased. Surviving Mr. Moore are his wife, his daughters, Mrs. John
R. Reynolds of Bay City, Mrs. Bennett Harvey, of Oklahoma City; Mrs.
A. M. Jackson, of Galveston; Mrs. C. M. O'Brien of Gulf; Miss Grace
Moore of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Miss Martha Moore of Bay City; his
sons, Grover, Layton and Jerome, all of Bay City; two brothers, H.
E. Moore of Wharton and Dan Moore of Bay City, and one sister, Miss
Eudora I. Moore of Buda, Texas; four grandchildren, Dolph Beadle
Moore, William Grover Moore, Marjorie Moore Harvey and Phyllis Moore
O'Brien.
In the passing of D. P. Moore, we see a
pioneer ranchman and merchant, a spirit clean, sturdy and fine,
possessing the unqualified esteem of every man who knew him and a
high sense of responsibility for the welfare of his family and his
fellowman. Of quiet dignity straightforward and sincere, his life
stands out as a distinct part in the development of Bay City and
Matagorda county.

Dr. Albert Searce Morton, 71, died at

discussing matters in his yard with a business friend, Mr.

His health had been failing for the past

Dr. Morton came to Bay City in 1901 when

July, 1917 and to that union one daughter, Mary Anna, was born.
He was born in Anderson County,

Kentucky and received his medical degree from the University of

County's First Nurse Honored
To celebrate National Professional
Nurses Week, the nurses at Matagorda General Hospital Tuesday
reverently hung a photograph of Genevieve Sharpless Morton, the
first nurse in Matagorda County, on the walls of the hospital
alongside those of doctors who have played a significant role in
county medical history.
The deceased Morton became the first
nurse to receive this honor.
In addition to being the first
professional nurse in the county, when she came to the county in
1914 she was the only nurse in the county's first hospital.
She came with Dr. Claude P. Jones with
the idea that she would remain for three months and would assist Dr.
Jones in establishing a hospital.
She remained for the rest of her life as
she married Dr. A. S. Morton of Bay City.
Dedicated to her profession, she worked
18 to 21 hours a day in the hospital at 2400 Avenue F in what was
known as the Rugeley building. That facility is an apartment unit
today.
Her photograph was hung with much pride
Tuesday afternoon by Abbie Taylor, director of nursing services at
Matagorda General Hospital, and Jan Johnson, critical care
coordinator.
The nursing profession has come a long
ways since Morton's days.
A person wishing to become a nurse may
choose one of the three education programs: baccalaureate degree,
associate degree and hospital diploma.
While Morton was one of a few
professional nurses in Texas back in 1914, there are 55,000 today
belonging to the 75-year-old organization known as the Texas Nurses
Association.
There are 37,000 nurses involved in
hospital work and 18,000 practice in offices, community agencies,
clinics, schools, nursing homes and industries.
Increasing numbers of nurses are
becoming specialists in areas such as birthing and well baby
clinics.
Nurses provide home care health visits
to shut-ins and elderly people, while clinics staffed and run by
nurses have become a standard and vital part of health care in many
rural and inner city communities.
Professional Nurses Week sponsored by
the TNA, has been proclaimed statewide by Gov. William P. Clements
Jr. and locally by County Judge Burt O'Connell.
