Funeral services for Chester Kemp, Sr., 76, of Cedar Lane, will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Brazoria, with the Rev. Steven Staten presiding, and the Rev. Carl Kemp, eulogist. Burial will follow at Shiloh
Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 until
8 p.m. at the chapel.

He was born in Pledger,
Texas, February 16, 1932, to John Neil Kemp and Rhynie Amey Kemp, and passed away February 14, 2009, in Houston, Texas.

Survivors include: wife, Rosie Kemp of Cedar Lane; two daughters, Sandra Woodard (and Melvin) of Houston, and Velma Mangum (and Arnold) of Van Vleck; and three sons, Robert Kemp (and Genoria) of Freeport, the Rev. Carl Kemp (and Theresa) of Bay City, and Darryl Kemp of Cedar Lane; one sister, Virginia Higgins of Houston, and one brother, Lloyd Kemp (and Marie) of Houston. Also a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Chester Kemp, Jr., June 13, 1986.

Roosevelt “Billy Man” Law

Roosevelt “Billy Man” Law, 65, of Houston will be held 11 a. m. Saturday at Greater Zion Baptist Church in Houston with the Rev. Jerald Dew officiating. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane. The body will lie in state at 2:30 p. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane.

Mr. Law was born March 13, 1927 in Matagorda County to the late Benjamin and Leona Law and he died July 27, 1992 at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston.

He was employed in Houston at the Yellow Cab Co. for 25 years and he also served in the Merchant Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Law of Houston; a daughter, Lisa Blair of Houston; two sons, Carey White of Freeport and Roosevelt Law Jr. of Houston; two grandsons, Shawn Swanson of Houston and Carey White Jr. of Freeport; an aunt, Phema Woodard of Cedar Lane; two brothers-in-law; a number of cousins and a family of friends.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Ward, Calvin Ward, Robert Earl Johnson, Dave Ward III, Garland Johnson and Anthony Edison. Honorary pallbearers are Roger Law, Ed Stanford, Hewitt Wiggins, Charles Roberts, Dave Ward Jr., John L. Prince, Donald Paige and the ushers of Greater Zion Church.

Mr. Law was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Law and Leona Petteway and his grandmother, Anica Paige-Spiller.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mrs. Roosevelt Walker Law

Funeral services for Mrs. Roosevelt Walker Law, age 88, of Cedar Lane, will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996, at 11 a. m., at the St. Mark Baptist Church in Cedar Lane, with the Rev. M. L. Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Saturday from 10 to 11 a. m. at the church.

She was born in Gainesmore, Texas, Sunday, July 12, 1908, to Austin Walker, Sr. and Melvina Brown Walker, and passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 1996, at Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston.

She was a former member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Cedar Lane, where [she served in] various elected offices which include church secretary for 27 years. She later moved to Houston to live closer to her children. There, she united with New Hope Baptist Church.

She attended Public School on Buckner’s Prairie in Cedar Lane.

Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Mrs. Erma Jean Burrell (& Allen), Mrs. Gladys Berniece Law and Mrs. Alfreda Law Franshaw, all of Houston, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Perry Law of Angleton. Other survivors include 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Beside her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Law, two sons, Burdine Law, Sr. and Thurman Law, Sr., and a grandson Burdine Law, Jr.

Active pallbearers will include Thurman Law, Jr., LaJuan Law Meyer, Tory Law, Eugene Law, Brent Law and Kenneth Davis.

Honorary pallbearers will include Craig Law, Melvin Law, Vandervilt Williams, George Williams, Lloyd Williams, J. E. Walker, Harold Law, Thurston Williams, Robert Lee Williams and Allen Burrell, Jr.

Israel Lee “Sonny” Lewis, Sr.

Funeral services for Israel Lee "Sonny" Lewis, Sr., 64, of Houston, formerly of Cedar Lane were Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Lane with the Rev. Melvin Johnson, officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

He died April 11, 2002 at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston.

He is survived by: his wife, Rosezetta Lewis of Houston; his mother, Sophie Lewis of Cedar Lane; two sons, Israel Lewis, Jr., and Malinda, Greg Lewis and LaRhonda, all of Dallas; two step-sons, Tommie Allen and Kaye of Houston, Charles Allen, of Rosharon; one daughter, Linda Lewis, of Dallas; three brothers, Sam Lewis and Judy, Henry Boone and Roxie, all of Houston, Mack Henry Lewis, Jr. and Gloria Jean of Cedar Lane; three sisters, Tommie Mae Bell, Julia Lewis, both of Cedar Lane, Sophie Lewis of Ft. Myers, Florida; one Godson, Bobby Stewart of Houston; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers were Raymond Bell, Sr., James Mayes, Lloyd Allen, Donnell Lewis, Jerome Jones, Jerome Lewis, Roger Porter and Raymond Bell, Jr.

Lee Curtis Lewis

Funeral services for Lee Curtis Lewis, 70, of Cedar Lane are 1 p. m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Cedar Lane, with the Rev. M. Griggs officiating. Burial to follow at Shiloh Cemetery, Cedar Lane.

There will be a wake in the chapel from 7 p. m. to 9 p. m. today at Green’s Mortuary and visitation from noon to 1 p. m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Lewis was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Andrew and Georgia Lewis and died April 20, 1990, at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Lucretia Lewis of Cedar Lane; a sister, Bernia Mae Foster of Bryan; one brother-in-law, Robert Green of Cedar Lane; three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers include Samuel Green, Roosevelt Green, Anthony Edison, James Price, William Franklin, Clarence Green, Robert Lee Green Sr., J. D. Gatson and Robert F. Green. Honorary pallbearers include Robert Green and Berean Usher Board and Deacons.

Funeral services for Sophie Dicey Mae “Mama Sophie” Lewis, 89, of Cedar Lane will be Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Lane with the Rev. Murray Griggs, officiating.

She was member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

She died March 19, 2003 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

She is survived by: three sons, Sam Lewis (Judy), Henry Boone (Roxie), all of Houston, Mack Henry Lewis, Jr. (Gloria), Cedar Lane; three daughters, Tommie Mae Bell, Cedar Lane, Julia Lewis, Brazoria, Sophie E. Lewis, Fort Myers, Florida; one brother, Henry Woodard, Sr. Brazoria; 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, eight great- great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Donnell Lewis, Gary Woodard, Jerome Lewis, Raymond Bell, Jr., Floyd Lewis, Eichard Helms, Jr., Israel Lewis, Jr., Johnnie Higgins.
