TRESPALACIOS BAPTIST CHURCH

1852 - 1859


JULY 4, 1852

According to previous appointment the following persons met at the home of Br. D. M. Wheeler on Trespalacios for the purpose of organizing a Church-- to wit Daniel M. Wheeler, Lavinia Hunter Wheeler, Horace Yeamans, Eliza Yeamans, John Smith, Maria Smith, John B. Smith, Sarah Tone, Samuel P. Biddle, Louisa Partain, Robert Partain, John Moore.

Six of the first above-named joined by Letter, all the others by experience and Baptism. And after a warm and appropriate Sermon by Brother Hill we organized into a Church after which the Church went into Conference and chose Brother Hill Moderator and the following resolutions were adopted:

1st. It was moved and seconded that the Church be called the Trespalacios Baptist Church.

2nd. It was moved and seconded that D. M. Wheeler, Horace Yeamans and John Smith be appointed a Committee to draft Rules of Decorum for the Government of the Church and present them at the next Conference.

3rd. The Church went into an Election for a Pastor; Brother Hill was unanimously elected.

4th. Horace Yeamans was elected Clerk.

5th. It was moved and seconded that Brother D. M. Wheeler be elected for our Deacon. He was unanimously elected Deacon of the Church.

On motion of Church, Brother Hill, Brother Callaway and Brother David Morell were chosen as a Presbytery to be invited to attend the next Conference to assist in the Ordination of Deacon.

On following Sabbath P. M. the Door of the Church was opened and while we sung a Hymn, Hagar a colored woman, came forward, related her experience and was Baptized by our beloved Pastor.


The Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in August, Brother Hill Mod.

The Door was opened for the reception of members and while they sung a hymn, Sarah Ann Moore and Mary Green came forward and took up their Cross to follow the Lord and Savior, and on Sabbath afternoon they were baptized and while at the water side, Jake and Patience, a colored man and his wife, presented themselves as candidates for Baptism and were Baptized strait way by our beloved Pastor. According to previous appointment, Brother D. M. Wheeler was ordained Deacon of the Trespalacios Baptist Church by our beloved Pastor Brother Hill after which we partook of the Lords Supper.

At our stated Conference in September Brethern met for Prayer.


OCTOBER 2nd, 1852. Brethern met for Prayer.


NOV. 6, 1852. The Church met for Prayer.


1853


The Tres Palacios Baptist Church after divine service met in Conference, Brother Calaway Moderator.

1st. Visiting Brethern were invited to seats.

2nd The Door was opened for the reception of Members when Mrs. E R Green presented herself and was received on profession of her faith in Christ and was Baptized.

There being no other business Conference adjourned, July 1853. Horace Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


Sister E. R. Green departed this life sometime in the month of August one thousand eight hundred and fifty three.


Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference. Bro. D. M. Wheeler Moderator.

Then the Church went into the Choice of a Pastor for the year 1854 which resulted in the unanimous choice of Brother N. Hill and the Church agreed on her part to pay said Hill one hundred dollars for his services, which was communicated to him and the said Hill agreed on his part to preach one Sabbath in each month and the Saturday before. 1854


JANUARY 22—Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference, Brother Hill Moderator.

1st. The proceedings of the previous Conference was taken up and read and approved by the Church.

2nd. The Church proceeded to elect a Clerk H. Yeamans was elected. There being no other business before the Conference, they adjourned. Bro. Hill, Moderator     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.

Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the third Sabbath in February. Brother Hill, Moderator.

1st. The door of the Church was opened and while singing a Hymn, Doctor Pilkington presented himself to the Church and was received and was Baptized. After which we partook of the Lords Supper.


Brother S. P. Biddle departed this life on the 9th. March 1854. A member of the Trespalacios Baptist Church.


The Trespalacios Church after divine service by Brother Claybough, met in Conference, Brother Claybough Mod.

The door opened for the reception of Members, after which Conference adjourned-- March 1854. Bro. Claybough, Mod.     Horace Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


The Trespalacios Church met on Saturday before the third Sabbath in April 1854.

1st. Visiting Brethern were invited to seats.

2ns. The Door was opened for the reception of members and while singing a hymn, Miss Mary Williams came forward and related what the Lord had done for her Soul. The Church extended to her the right hand of fellowship and on Sabbath afternoon was Baptized.

3rd. Bro. Hill proposed that Bro. Callaway be invited by the Church to preach the Dedication Sermon of the new Meeting House, a Motion was made and seconded and concured in by the Church having no other business the Conference adjourned. Bro. Hill Moderator     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


On the following Sabbath after divine service the Church met in Conference. Bro. Hill Mod.

1st. The Door was opened for the reception of Members, Isaac a servant of Dr. Pilkington was received by Letter from the Baptist Church of Matagorda and the right hand of fellowship given. Bro. Hill Moderator     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


MAY 28, 1854. Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the fourth Sabbath in May, Bro. Hill Moderator.

1st. Visiting Brethern were invited to seats.

2nd. The Door was opened for the reception of Members. Brother Lemual Calaway was received by Letter from the Baptist Church on old Cany and the right hand of fellowship given. Having no more business before the Conference they adjourned. Bro. Hill, Moderator     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.

Sabbath Morning May 29, 1854. According to previous appointment Br. L. Calaway preached the Dedication Sermon of the new Meeting House from the “ninetyeth” Psalm and 17th verse—“Establish Thou the work of our hands upon us, Yea the work of our hands establish Thou it.”


JULY 22, 1854. Trespalacios Church, after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the third Sabbath in July. Bro.Hill Moderator.

1st. The Door was opened for the reception of members.

2nd. It was moved and seconded that Bro. Calaway, Bro. Moore, and Brother Yeamans be elected delegates to the coming Association. Accordingly those 3 Brethern were elected. The Conference having no other business, adjourned. Bro. Hill Mod.     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.

1855


Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the third Sabbath in April, 1855, Bro. Calaway, Moderator.

1st. The Door was opened for the reception of Members.

2nd. It was moved and seconded that Bro. Calaway preach for us the coming year. Then Conference adjourned. H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


1857


APRIL 4, 1857. Then follows copy of a letter from D. M. Wheeler and Horace Yeamans to the Brother telling him he would be there pastor at one hundred dollars a year and that he must ask our Sister Church to have him ordained as soon as practicable. Then follows copy of a letter written from Fair Haven, April 25th, 1857 by James Haynie in answer to above saying the Enon Church would ordain him in May 1857 “the weather being good”. Also said he would be with them the fifth Sabbath and bring Bro. Loudermilk with him. Asked that God would bless and “Prosper You” as a Church in all things, and “prepare you all for Heaven.”

Follows a letter from Jackson Co., Texas Apr. 25, 1857 from Enon Baptist Church of Christ to her Sister Church at Trespalacios. Invited members to be present at the ordination of Bro. Haynie and signed by J. J. Loudermilk Mod. and J. N. Pumphry Ch. Cl.


MAY CONFERENCE-- According to previous appointment, Brother Haynie met with us on Saturday, before the fifth Sabbath in May and after Sermon by Bro. Loudermilk the Church met in Conference.   Brother Haynie, Moderator.

1st. Visiting Brethern were invited to seats with us.

2nd. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members, and while we sung a hymn, Sister Sally Lacy, Sister Francis Lacy, and Sister Jane Lacy presented their Letter for Membership from the Baptist Church, Spring Bayou, McCracken County, Kentucky, and were received into full fellowship with us. And while the opportunity was extended, John Partain, Robert O Neal, Benjamin A. Yeamans, and Eli H. Wheeler, gave evidence of their hope in Christ and were received. Sabbath morning the Church met and attended to the ordinance of Baptism--and after Divine Service, we partook of the Lord's Supper. Bro. Haynie, Moderator.     H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


JULY CONFERENCE-- the Trespalacios Church after divine service, met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in July, Bro. Haynie Moderator.

1st. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members.

2nd. The Minutes of the preceding Conference were read, then adjourned to the next day P. M. for the purpose of electing Delegates to the coming Association. On the following day, the Church met in Conference, Bro. Haynie Moderator, and the following Brethern were chosen as Delegates—Bro. L. Calaway, D. M. Wheeler and J. Moore. Also moved and seconded that we have our Communion Seasons quarterly. Bro. Haynie, Mod. H. Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


AUGUST CONFERENCE-- the Trespalacios Church, after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in August, Brother Haynie Moderator.

1st. The Minutes of the last Conference were read.

2nd. The Door was opened for the reception of members, and while we sang a hymn, Elijah Deckrow, *Wiley Kuykendall, and Matilda Deckrow came forward and gave satisfactory experience, and were received. After which Conference adjourned.

Sabbath morning after divine service the door of the Church was opened for the reception of members and while singing a hymn, Emma Deckrow and Joseph Williams, came forward and related what the Lord had done for their souls, and were received. And in the afternoon were Baptized.

SEPTEMBER CONFERENCE—Trespalacios Church after divine Service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in September, Brother Haynie, Mod.

1st. The Minutes of the last Conference were read. Also the letter to the Association. After which the door was open for the reception of members. And on the Sabbath following, we partook of the Lord's Supper. Bro. James Haynie, Mod.     Horace Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


OCTOBER--Departed this life on the 24th. of October, 1857, John Partain, a member of the Trespalacios Baptist church, rejoicing in hope of the Glory of God.

Departed this life on the thirtieth of October, 1857, Sarah Tone, our beloved Mother in Zion, a faithful member of the Trespalacios Baptist Church, who was at the organization of the Church, July 4, 1852.


NOVEMBER—According to previous appointment, the Church met on the fifth Sabbath and the Saturday before in November and protracted the Meeting four days. On Sabbath A. M. Brother Haynie preach the Funeral Sermon of Sister Tone from Rev. 14th. Chap, 13 verse, and in the afternoon Brother Hillsby Preached. Then Brother Thurmond gave a discourse on the Communion, after which we partook of the Lord's Supper. On Tuesday A. M. the door of the church was opened for the reception of Members, and while singing a Hymn, Maria a black woman, the servant of Brother Wheeler’s, came forward and gave evidence of her faith in Christ and was received. 1858


1858. Trespalacios Church met in Conference on Saturday at the commencement of the New Year. Bro.Haynie Moderator.

1st. The Minutes of the last Conference were read, and having no special business, before Conference they adjourned. On the Sabbath, Bro. Haynie gave an interesting discourse from Exodus, 40th  Chap. 2 verse.


MARCH CONFERENCE—The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in March, Brother Haynie, Moderator.

1st. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members, and while singing a Hymn, Brother John Moore’s servant, Harriet, came forward and related her experience and was received. On Motion, the Conference adjourned till afternoon—Conference met, pursuant to an adjournment. It was moved and seconded that a Committee of two be appointed to cite Bro. Pilkington to appear at our next Conference.  H. Yeamans and D. M. Wheeler were appointed.

Sabbath morning, Sermon by Bro. J. M. B. Haynie, after which the door of the Church was opened or the reception of members, and while singing a Hymn, Bro. Pilkington’s servant Palina presented her letter for membership in good standing from the Baptist Church of Matagorda, and was received. Also Harriet, the servant of John Moore. After which the Ordinance of Baptism was administered and partook of the Lord's Supper. Bro. Haynie, Moderator.     Horace Yeamans, Ch. Clk.


APRIL CONFERENCE 1858. The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in April. Bro. Haynie Mod.

1st. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members.

2nd. The minutes of the last Conference were read and approved.

3rd. The rules of the former read after which Brother Pilkington, being cited at our last Conference to attend to answer to charges, the Church had to prefer against him, he asked leave to make a statement of the supposed charges against him and did make a statement of two and went on to justify himself in that he had been guilty of, and to the satisfaction of the Church (with the exception of one member) convicted himself out of his own mouth and was also guilty of unbecoming language and showed an unchristian spirit and defied the Church to cut him off or exclude him from membership or fellowship taking the Bible or the word of God for their guide. The Church being satisfied with the above exception believed that he was guilty of the charges and that he was not worthy to be retained as a member of the Baptist Church of Christ, whereupon a motion was made and seconded to exclude said Pilkington from the fellowship of this Church. All the members present except one voting in the affirmative and one not voting after which Brother Haynie retired and the Church elected Bro. D. M. Wheeler moderator proceeded to call a Pastor for the year 1858. Brother James Haynie was unanimously chosen. Brother John Moore and Brother Yeamans were appointed a Committee to wait on Brother Haynie to inform him of the call of the Church, after which Conference adjourned. MAY 1858—The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in May. Bro. Haynie Moderator.

1st. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members.

2nd. The minutes of the last Conference were read whereupon Brother Pilkington took exception thereto and declared that they were untrue and carried falsehood upon its face and denounced the Church saying that she had conspired against him and was determined to cut him off without giving him a proper defense and charged the Church with many things that he could not sustain against her or anyone of her members and guilty of more unkind feeling and vindictiveness against the Church and its members and could not be kept in order by the Moderator and all members of the Church to sustain him, and the state of the Conference was such a motion was made to adjourned for a short time after which the Church again met and reassumed its business. Brother Pilkington was also in attendance and confessed to the Moderator that he had been informed by some persons present that he had used harsh language toward the Moderator for which he asked pardon for, and as far as the Moderator was concerned he freely forgave him after which he shook hands with the Moderator and a majority of the Church, bidding them farewell and declaring himself no longer a member of the Church, after which a motion was made and seconded to exclude said Pilkington from the fellowship of the Church and he was unanimously excluded, more members voting by one than at the present Conference.

Sister Louisa Partain having joined the Methodist Society on motion and seconded, the Church excluded said Sister from the fellowship of this Church unanimously.

There having been a charge preferred against Brother Joseph Williams, it was moved and seconded that there be a Committee appointed to wait on said Brother Williams and cite him to appear at our next Conference. It was moved and seconded that Brother John Moore and Brother John B. Smith be appointed a Committee after which Conference adjourned. Bro. Haynie Mod.     H Yeamans Clerk


JUNE 1858—Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in June. Bro. Haynie Moderator.

1st. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of Members.

2nd. The minutes of the last Conference were read.

3rd. On the unfavorable report of the Committee that was appointed to wait on Brother Joseph Williams, there was a motion made and seconded to exclude said Williams from the fellowship of the Church.

He was therefore unanimously excluded after which Conference was adjourned.

Sabbath morning after divine service we partook of the Lords Supper, after which Brother Haynie informed the Church of the exceptance of the call of the Church with a proviso that he would preach for us to the end of the year 1858 it was unanimously concurred in by the Church. JULY CONFERENCE 1858—Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on the fourth Sabbath in July. Brother Joseph Haynie Moderator.

1st. We proceeded to elect Delegates to the coming Association D. M. Wheeler, John Moore and John Smith were elected, after which Conference adjourned. H. Yeamans, Clerk.


AUGUST 1858—Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in August. Bro. J. Haynie, Mod.

1st. The minutes of the last Conference were read and approved.

2nd. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of members.

3rd. On motion and seconded Brother Robert Partain was elected Delegate and lieu of John Smith. Having no other business before Conference we adjourned. Bro. Haynie Mod.     Horace Yeamans Clerk.


SEPTEMBER 1858—The Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in September, Brother J. Haynie, Mod. The door of the Church was opened for the reception of Members and having a special business before Conference we adjourned. Bro. J. Haynie, Mod     H. Yeamans Clerk


OCTOBER 1858—The Church met for Prayer.


DECEMBER 1858—The Church met for Prayer.


1859


JANUARY 1859--The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on the second day of the New Year and chose a Moderator for the purpose of calling a Pastor for the year 1859 for which the Church on her part agrees to pay said Brother Haynie one Hundred Dollars having resulted in the unanimous choice of Brother James Haynie. It was also moved and seconded that the Clerk inform him by letter of the call of the Church. Done in Conference. Horace Yeamans Ch Clerk


FEBRUARY CONFERENCE 1859-- The Trespalacios Baptist Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in February. Brother J Haynie, Moderator.

1st. The door of the church was opened for the reception of Members. Having no special business before Conference we adjourned. Brother J Haynie, Mod.     H. Yeamans Clerk.

Departed this life on the 30th of February 1859 Mary Barber formerly Mary Williams, a devoted member of the Baptist Church who cincerely regret her loss believing however that our loss is her eternal gain.

MAY 1859—According to previous appointment the Trespalacios Church met on the fifth Sabbath and the Saturday before in May. Brother J Haynie and Brother Thompson a Missionary Agent met with us and protracted the meeting three days on Sabbath a collection was taken up for Missionary purposes. Horace Yeamans, Ch. Clerk.


JULY 1859-- The Trespalacios Baptist Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in July. It was moved and seconded that Brethern D. M. Wheeler, John Moore, John Smith be elected Delegates to the coming Association. They were accordingly chosen. Having no other business Conference adjourned.


AUGUST CONFERENCE—The Trespalacios Baptist Church after divine service met in Conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in August.   Bro. James Haynie, Mod.

1st. The door of the church was opened for the reception of Members.

2nd. The Minutes of the last Conference were read and approved. Having no unfinished business before Conference we adjourned.

Sabbath Morning-- Sermon by Brother Haynie and in the afternoon Brother Haynie handed in his resignation of his Pastorial care of the Church without assigning any reason for so doing.   Horace Yeamans, CH Clerk.


Died on 22 August 1859 Eliza Yeamans the wife of Horace Yeamans in the 32nd year of her age. Sister Yeamans was born in the Town of Manchaster England Feb. 3rd, 1828 and was baptized by Brother Noah Hill into the fellowship of the Baptist Church of Matagorda in October 1848. She together with her husband joined the Trespalacios Baptist Church July 4th 1852 on the day of its Organization in which Church she remained an orderly and consistent Member.


SEPTEMBER CONFERENCE 1859-- The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference on the first Sabbath in September and chose Brother Moore Moderator. After the first and second rules were dispensed with, there was a charge brought against Brother Wily K Kuykendall for disorderly conduct. On motion and seconded there was a Committee appointed to wait on the said Brother K. and reclaim him to the fellowship of the Church. Brethern John Smith, John B. Smith and Robert Partain appointed Committee. John Moore, Mod.     Horace Yeamans, Ch Clerk.


OCTOBER CONFERENCE 1859—The Trespalacios Church after divine service met in Conference and chose Brother Moore Moderator. The case of Brother Wiley Kuykendall was brought up. The Committee was not ready to report after which the Church proceeded to elect a pastor after motion and seconded Brother Loudermilk was unanimously chosen for the term of six months for which the Church agrees to pay him fifty dollars and authorized the Clerk to inform Brother Loudermilk of the proceedings of the Church.
