McDade News By Andy Blaschke Bastrop County Times article is undated. Mary Ethel Stagner, who is 90 years young Jan. 17, celebrated her birthday early this year by having a party this past Saturday at her home in McDade. She had visitors from San Antonio, Houston, Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown and Bastrop, as well as McDade, helping her celebrate. Mary is one of the seven children born to W.J. and Bessie “Holman” Stagner at Oak Hill in Bastrop County. After completing grade school at Oak Hill, she came to McDade to complete her schooling but because of World War I and a flu epidemic she never finished. However, determinedly she studied on her own, took tests and became a teacher. The school where she taught was Fair Oak, which was between Paige and McDade. She lived with the The Dungan family (George Dungan’s mother and father) while teaching, returning home on the weekend. Mary didn’t like teaching so after two years she quit to become a telephone operator in McDade at the Warren Rowe residence. Mary later worked many years at the A.S.C.S. Office in Bastrop under Kleber Trigg, receiving numerous awards for her quality work. Mary is still active and in good health, though she doesn’t drive her car anymore. Mary, we all wish you many more happy birthdays. Bastrop County Times-
March 21, 1991 McDade News by Andy Blaschke McDade had a nice rain over the weekend. There was a little over an inch of water in my rain gauge. The top of the ground was getting a little dry so that inch really helped, particularly in the deep sand,. The Tom Milton home, next to the school, was torn down last week before it fell down. Gladys Rutherford, whose deceased husband Bill Rutherford owned the house, said “that termites had gotten the best of it.” The house was over 100 years old and was built by John Sapp. Gladys wasn’t too sure, but she had heard that either that house or one close to it was used by the stage coach line that used to come through McDade. Gladys also reported that her sister-in-law, Vinnie Ashmun, and her husband Harry from Conroe, had visited with her over the weekend. |
