Blake
Scott
(The family does not call him Beck, Bake, but Blake)
Blake Scott, hung on June 27, 1877 at the Airhart Dance near Blue
Branch along with Young Floyd, John Kuykendall, and Wade Alsup, was the
son of Joseph Blake Scott the U.S. Postmaster of McDade from June 14,
1881-Jan. 3, 1884. (This would be the time of the shoot-out) Joseph Blake
Scott had a reputation of being "a fine man" and Blake (hung)
was his son from a marriage prior to his marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth
J. Wiggins Hollingshead, Scott.
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Wiggins Hollingshead & first husb.,
Elijah Hollingshead had a daughter Emma "Emily" Hollingshead who
would be a step sister to Blake (Jr.). Emma Hollingshead and Blake
Scott, her step-brother, were having a great time at the Pat Airhart Dance
near Blue Branch on June 27, 1877.
They were square dancing when the masked men appeared in
the doors and windows with their guns, calling out the names of Wade,
Blake, John, and Young. Blake and Emma were fond of each other and
as he answered his call he whispered to Emma." so-long Emma."
The four named were the same four left hanging from the limb.
The four hung on the limb are buried in the Burns cemetery. It might
be of some interest to you that other Wiggins are buried in the Burns
Cemetery too. I can't give the relationship if there is one, and I suppose
there probably is one.
Emma "Emily" Hollingshead later married William Curtis
"Curt" Stewart a pioneer Texas Pharmacist who worked in the Drug
Store in McDade on May 31, 1880.
Other prominent McDade families to have descended form the Stewart family
are; Mary Ellen Stewart & Henry Meyers-Jake Meyers was their son.
Margaret Stewart & Joseph Warren Westbrook-J.W. was our Civil War Hero
and is related to Grover C. Westbrook.
