Henry
Inlo Layne, is the father of Martha Ann "Mattie"
Layne who married Silas Alexander Abbott.
Henry built Washington Bower in 1838. It was used as a
stagecoach stop, as well. Robert E. Lee came to the home
at one time during the war, stayed overnight.
Henry died young, working on the roof in the heat of the
summer, got heatstroke. Came off the roof to get a cool
drink of water from the cistern, had a heart attack and
died.
