DEVELOPING A COLONIAL MINDSET Because geographical boundaries did not change when colonies became states, many researchers when crossing the research boundary from doing federal research (after the Revolution) to doing colonial research (before the Revolution) do not consciously expect to find differences, but there are significant variances both in overall approach and available records. LOOK AGAIN! WHAT DID YOU MISS? Are you waiting for the book that says "Shadrack Jones is the son of Meshack Jones"? Do you search for a deed that implies the relationship between Abel Brown and Cain Brown? Do you hope for a clue to the father of Abednego Smith? Guess what? You may already have found-and copied-that information. You may find more success in reexamining your files, than in seeking new sources. "MY ANCESTOR ISN'T IN THE CENSUS" ARE YOU SURE? Maybe it isn't true. Maybe the correct statement is, "I can't find my ancestor in the census" or even, "I can't find my ancestor in the index." Discusses why you haven't found your ancestor and suggests approaches that may lead to him or her.
