Midland District Court
Divorces 1886 - 1900

By Ann Auburg, CGRS

Introduction

District court records contain a vast amount of important genealogical information. Rare is the individual who
escapes mention in some capacity during his lifetime. Typically, names of litigants, members of jury panels, deponents, witnesses and signers of petitions will be recorded. One can also expect to find names of local officeholders and those licensed to practice law.

The Midland District Court held its first session on June 26, 1886. Among those reporting for jury duty were: C.W. HUNTER, J. E. D. STALLINGS, W. A. CROSLEY, J. B. LAWRENCE, J. J. McCOLLOUGH, John EAGLETON, N. V. NASH, Thomas BURNAM, J. C. CARR, G. W. BUTLER, W. L. PAYNE, William LANCASTER, W. N. WARREN, S. H. McCARTNEY, L. H. HOPKINS, J. W. LAWRENCE. &nbs;&nbs; D. A. McBRIDE served as bailiff.

All the actions of this and subsequent court sessions, both civil and criminal, were briefly recorded by the clerk in bound, unindexed volumes labeled District Court Minutes. All the volumes are extant and have been well preserved. The earlier volumes are currently housed in an off-site storage facility, as are the documents generated by each cause. Members of the clerk's staff make frequent trips between the courthouse and the storage facility. Upon request, a stored record will be brought to the District Clerk's office, located on the third floor of the Midland County Courthouse, and made available for research. The courtesy of a few days advance notice is appreciated.

Records that unequivocally state family relationships are the most valued by genealogists. Divorce records, probably more than any other generated by this jurisdiction, meet this criterion. It is for this reason that the divorce cases recorded in District Court Minutes, Volume I have been selected to be abstracted.
