Notes on Searching the Library Catalog Online

Search Example— I would like all the books about cemeteries in Kentucky.  So, I enter cemetary which will bring up all items with titles, authors and subjects beginning with this word.  Now, I know there have to be more than 5.  So, I can check my spelling in the dictionary...oh yes, it's cemetery.  Also, try marriage and marriages to see different results.  Be creative, be flexible...try search that includes Title/Author/Subject, or try Any Fields.

Set Limits — Since I'm interested in a book, and over 90% of the collection is Genealogy

Reference — I will choose this setting.  

Title—If I know the title, or partial title.  (ex. Thorney Train...comes up Thorny Trail—spelling somewhat forgiving)

Author—Some authors' names (ex. Max Perry) will not come up unless, you put last name first (ex. Perry, Max).  Also try Elizabeth Prather or Prather, Elizabeth.

Subject—You can search by any number of subjects (see Search)  Also, if you are interested in a particular surname, enter that surname followed by the word family.  (ex. Small family or Fritz family)

Combination — I find most useful to enhance my subject searches to limit to or avoid certain words such as county or state.  (ex. Washington County, Illinois where this may not come up as a phrase)  Or, I could put in "cemetery" and "Kentucky" as subjects.  Since I don't really want the individual county ones, I can go back to Combination and add "not county as a subject".  This section takes boolen characters as well. 

Publisher— This is very helpful if you know who or what society may have published an item, but can't recall the title or author.  It also is helpful to find books on a particular area if you know a publisher that specializes in that area.  (ex. Ericson Books specializes in Texas genealogy)

Browse—Although limits you to one search choice at a time, also allows you to search by call number.  This means you can look for ALL the books on a certain state or county (ex. 929.3 TX, or  for Midland County, 929.3 TX-169)  You can find a county number by typing that county in for a general Title/Author/Subject search, find call number of one, then go back and put it in the Browse/Local Call Number selection.   929.3 is MOST of the collection—from general areas through all the states and counties.  929.35 is for our foreign section.  929.2 is the surname collection.

Notes— By typing in the words "given in memory of" or "given in honor of" with individual's name, can find all the books dedicated to a particular individual.

New Items—This is great to see what's been added since your last visit or search.  Select Any Field, Set limits to Genealogy Reference and Select appropriate date.

History—You can see what I've looked at so far in this session, and return to any I would like.  As long as you don't go back to Home, will keep track of your inquiries.

For best results...always type out the full state name

To keep history of your searches and Saved List you MUST always scroll down and enter your new search. If you go back to home, or use back arrow, you will lose the information.
