MIDLAND COUNTY CONFEDERATE PENSION APPLICANTS

To assist Texas residents who were veterans, or widows of veterans, of the Confederate State Army, the Texas Legislature passed a bill on May 12, 1899, authorizing pension benefits. Although service in a Texas unit was not required, the veteran or his widow had to have come to Texas prior to January 1. 1880. (Eligibility was later extended to those who came before 1910.) Copies of these pension application records may be requested from Archives, Texas State Library, Box 12927 - Capital Station, Austin, TX 78711. A free form is required to order this pension record and may be ordered from the above address. Following is a list of Midland County Pension Applicants. Note:

CONFEDERATE HEROES HONORED

Texas Heroes Day was observed Monday, January 19, 1981 at Fairview                                        
Cemetery, Midland, Texas with ceremonies under the direction of he Mid-                                        
land County Historical Commission, Midland County Historical Society,                                        
and the Seven Brothers Theus Chapter of the United Daughters of the Con-                                        
federacy as a part of the Texas Heritage Program.                                        
                                        
A statewide marking program for Civil War Veterans was initiated in                                        
1961 by the Texas Historical Foundation and the Texas Historical Survey                                        
Committee. During the years of the Civil War Centennial, 1961-19659 the                                        
Midland County Historical Society and the Midland County Historic Com-                                        
mission surveyed, recorded and marked the graves of 31 veterans buried                                        
in Midland. The following is a list of those Confederate Veterans whose                                        
graves have been marked:
