Learn to Control your Search Engine
If you are searching for a NAME or specific DESCRIPTION that is more than a single word then put "" around those words as in "Alexander Bell" (964,000)
If you want to ensure a particular word you are searching MUST be present in the search result then put a + in front of that word (or words). Do not leave a space between the +and the word as in +Probate (467)
If you want to EXCLUDE a term (or terms) which you think may be commonly associated with what you are looking for put a -in front of the word (or words). Do not leave a space between the -and the word as in -phone -inventor (316)
These options can be used on their own or in any combination. In order to produce a list of sites concerned with your search criteria would look like this:
"Alexander Bell" phone graham -inventor (279)
AND or OR can also be used to help control the results
For example: "John Smith" AND "William Smith" or "Bill Smith" OR "William Smith"
Best Search Engine Google
Hint press CTL & F(ind) simultaneously, to bring up a search box, enter the name you used in the search term, let it search the current page for that name and close the search box. The next time you pull it up, the name will still be in the search box
Multiple Search Engine - Info.com Searches 14 search engines at once.
I have not found it very useful.
*Search terms for family web pages (these will only bring up genealogy related returns)
GedCom OR Ged2HTML OR Ged4Web OR GedPage OR Ged2www OR GedTree OR GedHTree OR WebbedGed OR WebGed OR Ged2WWW +your search terms. Just copy and paste the green text into your browser search box and add your search parameters.
Search for Location -
Search all sites for information for a given location:
Linkpendium
This is a very good site to find all available information for your genealogical location specific quest.
Gen Scrapbook
To store the data gleaned from the search sites above, consider dumping them in a Gen Scrapbook file. In My Documents, create a Gen Scrapbook folder. And inside it create folders, as you need them, for each surname you are researching and for each locality. Just highlight and copy (right click) information that might be useful in the future and paste it into your favorite word processing program and save it in your scrapbook folder. Above the data, paste the URL where you found the information. Then you can quickly search it with the Control and F(ind) command that you just learned or go back to the original data location.
Research Wiki (
You saw it here first) - Family Search Research Wiki This can be used as a Gen Scrapbook online and shared with your "cousins".
