STATE ABSTRACTS OF TEXAS LAND TITLES

The first Spanish explorers entered and claimed Texas during the early 1500s, but more than a century was to elapse before the
emerging settlements of Ysleta, Soccorro, and San Elizaro, along the Rio Grande River, would effectively mark the beginning of
Spain's domination over Texas soil.

By 1716 the Spanish Crown was bestowing grants for large tracts of land to missions and individual settlers along the
Sabine River in East Texas. Within two years, grants to property located mid-point between the Sabine and the Rio Grande, known
today as San Antonio, became a reality. Spain continued conferring grants into the early nineteenth century.

The Province of Texas, established by Spain in 1727, became part of the new nation of Mexico in 1821. Interested in
attracting settlers, Mexico developed attractive land laws that provided for liberal grants to empresarios, as well as to
individual settlers. Mexico soon, however, became alarmed by the overwhelming response by immigrants from the United States. In
1830, a new law was passed which forbade further entries from that sector. Settlement by citizens of Mexico, who resided
outside the Province of Texas, was encouraged. Grants continued to be awarded by Mexican officials until November 13, 1835. The
Texas Provisional Government closed the land offices on the eve of the revolution, marking the end of Mexican control. For a
brief time, all public land activity in Texas ceased.

Texas existed as a republic for almost ten years after having won her independence from Mexico. The General Land
Office was established by the new government to administer the public domain. Most previous grants were recognized. Old
Mexican municipalities were organized into counties and different land policies were formulated.

Texas officially joined the United States of America on December 29, 1845, fully in possession of her public domain,
which amounted to about 175 million acres. Ill defined boundaries caused a portion of this to be lost as disputes were settled.

Since 1836, the General Land Office of Texas has collected, preserved, and maintained original land records. Included in the
collection are the grants issued by Spain and Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the State of Texas.

Midland Public Library has recently acquired Abstract of All Original Grants and Locations Comprising Texas Land Titles, an
index published by the General, Land office. Listed along with other pertinent information are the names of original grantees
and patentees.

The following pages contain names of early Midland Count grantees and patentees which have been extracted from this work.
