ACGS and OMR CDs

The ACGS purchased a PC to be used to access data on the many genealogy data CDs contributed by the society to the Ora McMullen Room. Many of the CDs are electronic versions of index books that were previously published in print. Many of the CDS seem to be designed to make it difficult to print or copy info to protect against copyright infringement. These CDs consist of over 87 CDs or sets of CDs containing data such as:

These CDs use various programs to access the data. The following are tips on using each of those programs.

Use CD exactly as you would a roll of microfilm: 

	- use another source as an index to find the page a person will be found on 

	- then use that page info to view the images on the CD



==== TO START ON ACGS PC ====

1. Insert CD into drive F:

2. Click Start then Heritage Quest (HQ) Resource Viewer

3. CD opens to first frame of digital microfilm



==== VIEW IMAGES ====

1. Click on a page number in left-hand pane to view that page of the census images



There are also Toolbar Buttons to:

- go to next or previous page

	(also: F5 goes to next page, F6 to previous page

- rotate image left, right or back to default

- zoom in or out 

	(also: left click on the image zooms in, right click zooms out)

- do image enhancement (brightness, gamma, contrast)

- invert image (to negative)

- save, copy or print the image

- fit to page or just height or width, or do 1-to-1 full size image view





==== PRINT AN IMAGE  ====

1. Click File then Print

2. In popup window (optionally draw a window around a PORTION of the

   image to be printed) click print

3. Select printer (hp deskjet 3420 series)

4. Click print





==== SAVE AN IMAGE TO FILE ====

1. Click File then Image then Save

2. In popup window (optionally draw a window around a PORTION of the

   image to be saved) click save

3. Enter file name to save to and include .tif as the suffix

4. Click save

5. File can then be imported into a Word document, or an image editor

   program to crop the black edges before printing


FAV TIPS FAMILY ARCHIVE VIEWER FREE VIEWER FOR BRODERBUND AND FAMILY TREE MAKER CDS ==== TO START ==== 1. Click Start then Family Archive Viewer 2. Insert Any Family Archive / Broderbund CD into drive F (DVD ROM drive) 3. Click the red X to close the Windows explorer file list of the CD contents 3. Click OK after reading the license agreement (this has to be redone every time the CD is swapped out) ==== TO LOAD A NEW CD ONCE STARTED ==== 1. Remove old CD and install new one into drive F: 2. QUICKLY press ENTER. If you are too slow you must clear 2 screens before getting to the data: a) click the red X to close the Windows explorer file list of the CD contents; then b) click OK after reading the license agreement (this has to be redone every time the CD is swapped out) 3. May have to click View - Family Finder (Search CD) to have the new CDs index read in GROUP SEARCH WORDS - surround with \ (back slash) ex: \samuel johnson\ WILDCARDS - * for multiple characters ? for one character ex: Nix* for Nixen Nixon Nixx and more Eli* for Eliza Elisa Elizabeth Elisabeth and more Eli?abeth for Elizabeth Elisabeth and more ==== INDEX SEARCH ==== 1. Click on Index 2. Enter name to scroll to 3. Highlight desired entry and double click it to go to that entry in the scanned book pages (if this CD has scanned book pages) ==== EXPERT SEARCH ==== 1. Click on "Search Expert" button (upper right) 2. Click on "Search this archive for someone NOT from your Family File 3. Enter surname(s) and/or marriage date or search criteria allowed for the specific CD - on Family Finder Index CDs - enter surname, given (use comma) - index to data on other CDs only - on World Family Tree CDs - enter surname, given (use comma) - GEDCOM files and family data submitted to FTM - USE ONLY AS CLUES TO FIND ORIGINAL EVIDENCE - on Family History and some other CDs it may be useful to view the Contents Tab and Introduction so you know what is on the CD and tips on how best to search 4. Click on "Start Search" -- first entry matching search criteria is highlighted and all matching entries have a magnifying glass icon to the left of the name -- * and ? wildcards can be used ON SOME CDs 5. Use buttons at bottom of screen to scroll to next, previous, first or last matching entry 6. When find entry of interest all the data may be shown in the data window OR the names and marriage/license dates are shown in the data window, city/county and state location for the marriage are shown in the CD title section just above the data window - on World Family Tree CDs - double-click on an individual to see WFT data - may find parents, siblings, etc. - scrapbooks - click View - Family Page to return to Family Page (if get lost) - can generate genealogy reports, charts, etc. - File - Export to save to a Rich Text Format (RTF) or TEXT (TXT) file - click View - Family Finder (Search CD) to return to index page NOTE - some CDs have an icon at the bottom to "find out additional information" about the selected entry - keep an eye out for this as it often gives FHL microfilm numbers for finding the original records ==== CONTENTS BROWSE ==== 1. Click on "Contents" Tab 2. Click on desired state in "Select Section" window on left or top on some CDs 3. Click on desired County/Parish in window on right or top pane on some CDs (this also shows the date range of the included marriages for each parish on some CDs) ==== COPYING AND PRINTING DATA ==== 1. Click desired entry 2. Click Edit - Select Entry (more entries can be selected if desired) 3. Click Edit - Copy Entry (equivalent to CTRL/C) 4.Open a NotePad/WordPad file then do CTRL/V to paste into the document 5. Click File then Print ==== COPYING AND PRINTING IMAGES ==== Instructions for copying and printing images from this Family Archive CD are the same for both Family Tree Maker or the Family Archive Viewer. To copy an image to the Clipboard: 1. Display the image that you want to copy. 2. Click the "Copy this image to the Clipboard" icon. To print an image: 1. Display the image that you want to print. 2. From the Edit menu, choose Select Image (ALT, E, L). Family Tree Maker or the Family Archive Viewer places a printer icon in the upper-left corner of the dialog box. 3. Repeat step two to select any additional images you want to print. 4. When you have selected all of the images you want to print, from the File menu, choose Print (ALT, F, P). A dialog box asks you to confirm that you want to print all of the images you have selected. 5. Click OK to print the selected items. Each image is printed on a separate page. At the bottom of each page, you will also see source information about the Family Archive from which you copied the image. ==== GO TO A PAGE ==== If you know which page you want to print or copy, you can go to it quickly with the "Go To" command: 1. From the Edit menu, select "Go To Page" (ALT, E, G). Family Tree Maker or the Family Archive Viewer displays the Go To dialog box. 2. Select the section in which the page is located, and then type the page number. 3. Click OK. Family Tree Maker or the Family Archive Viewer displays the page you requested.
GRS TIPS GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH SYSTEM ==== SPECIAL PRINT INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS XP ==== 1. Press F2 2. TAB to "Destination Options" 3. ARROW DOWN to "New File" or "Add to File" then press SPACEBAR 4. ARROW DOWN to "File Name" and enter a DOS style name (8 characters maximum followed by ".txt" - no spaces between characters - for example: temp01.txt 5. Press F2 - the data is now saved into file C:\GRS\temp01.txt Additional records can be saved by doing a new search and repeating the steps above and using "Add to File" When all records saved are ready to be printed use Windows Notepad to print: 1. Exit from GRS - press F10 then "Y" 2. Double-click "My Documents" on the Desktop 3. Click the UP button in the explorer window that appeared 4. Double-click "My Computer" 5. Double-click "Drive C:" 6. Double-click "GRS" 7. Double-click the file name (example - temp01.txt) and it will open in Windows Notepad (if you did not enter the .txt you will have to select Windows Notepad as the program to view the file) 8. Click File then Print then "hp deskjet 3420 series" and OK 9. After the file prints close Notepad and the Explorer window ==== TO START ==== 1. Click Start then GRS 2. Insert CD into drive F (DVD ROM drive) 3. Press ENTER key 4. Select Load CD (drive F) and press ENTER key ==== TO LOAD A NEW CD ONCE STARTED ==== 1. Press F9 2. Remove old CD and install new one into drive F: 3. Press ENTER to Load CD ==== SEARCH ==== GROUP SEARCH WORDS - when entering a SEARCH as described below enter 2 words such as "anderson thomas" on the search screen then press ENTER and a Search Methods Screen comes up - use ARROW keys to move to desired entry such as "Within __ Words Apart" and enter "1" then press ENTER again - press F4 to start the search and it finds thomas AND anderson together instead of thomas OR anderson anywhere in the database WILDCARDS - * for multiple characters ex: AND* finds Andrews, Anders, Andersen, Anderson, etc. ANDER*N finds Andersen, Anderson, Anderton, etc. - SOUNDEX codes can be used for searches on most GRS CDs 1. Press F4 and enter a name/soundex code/date (YYYY-MM-DD or just year)or other value to search for, to enter multiple names use the TAB key to move to the next entry field 2. Press F4 to start the search 3. Read screen saying how many items were found matching the search criteria then press a KEY - the main screen is redisplayed BUT the right hand "SCREEN" pane shows number of hits in each title 4. Press F6 or ENTER to go to the first hit N goes to the next hit P goes to the previous hit UP/DOWN ARROWs scroll one line at a time PAGE UP / PAGE DOWN scroll one screen at a time HOME scrolls to first screen in the TITLE END scrolls to last screen in the TITLE T scrolls to first screen with a MATCH B scrolls to last screen with a MATCH G scrolls to a particular screen number + scrolls to next TITLE in the list - scrolls to previous TITLE in the list 5. Navigate to desired title and press ENTER - goes to first hit in that title ==== KEY FUNCTIONS ==== UP/DOWN ARROW keys or PAGE UP / PAGE DOWN keys move within a pane LEFT/RIGHT ARROW keys moves between panes F1 HELP F2 PRINT F3 RESETS (CLEARS) SEARCH F4 SEARCH F5 TITLE LIST F9 NEW CD / DATA F10 EXIT -then enter "Y" to exit
PROGENY FAMILY EXPLORER TIPS SAR REVOLUTIONARY WAR GRAVES REGISTER Names and burial locations of soldiers, sailors and civilian Patriots of the Revolutionary War, as well as some of their spouses NOTE: Not all application options are available on all CDs. For example, many of the SAR Revolutionary War Graves entries do not list family members or only list a spouse so descendant and ancestor reports will not be displayed. Also, "find relatives" may not find any relatives. These features are more useful in some other PROGENY CDs. ==== TO START ==== 1. Insert CD 2. Click Start then Progeny Family Explorer 3.1 GROUP SEARCH WORDS - Multiple keywords must be separated by a blank space. DO NOT USE PERIODS, COMMAS, QUOTATIONS MARKS OR PUNCTUATION OF ANY KIND. Keywords can be entered in any order. For example, ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEM will return the same results as CEM NATIONAL ARLINGTON. ==== QUICK SEARCH ==== 1. Enter surname and/or given name then click OK to start the search ex: mcsp goes to first surname starting with mcsp 2. Then can scroll through list ==== SPECIFIC SEARCH ==== 1. Click Search and enter terms ex: Any person, name = mcspadden ex: Place contains nacogdoches or place contains angelina 2. Use next/previous matches button to view matches 3. HERITAGE QUEST WORD CRUNCHER Index to 1883 Pensioners' Roll - individuals or widows entitled to pensions for service in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Cherokee Removal, Mexican War, Civil War (Union) Federal Pensioners Roll of 1883 contains digitized images of the printed volumes with an index. Indexed information on each pensioner includes: - full name - county and state where pensioner resided - volume and page number pertaining to the pensioner Scanned page images also include: - pension certificate number - post office address of pensioner - cause for which pensioned - monthly rate - date of original allowance With the information found on the CD you can then order the pension file from NARA. NOTE: scanned pages are in negative format - printing as-is will use a LOT of ink. ==== TO START ==== 1. Insert CD 2. Click Start then HQ Federal Pensioners Roll of 1883 3. Click OK if want coach or turn coach off if familiar with usage instructions 4. Double click on an item in Book Name (Alphabetical Order or Sequential Order) brown joseph - looks for brown AND joseph in the same record brown joseph + brown josiah - looks for brown AND joseph OR brown and josiah in the same record GROUP SEARCH WORDS - space = AND (johnson samuel finds samuel AND johnson) + = OR (johnson samuel + jensen samuel finds johnson samuel OR jensen samuel) WILDCARDS - ? = one character (sm?th finds smith, smyth, smuth) ==== SEARCH ==== Enter names as surname given-name with no comma for best results Easy Search - when you know the exact spelling used in the roll 1. Click Search then Easy Search 2. Enter surname given (ex: johnson samuel) - can modify meaning of a space - exact phrase for name only - other search criteria will return hits where the given and surname are in the same records but not the named person (there will be times when the other search options are useful but NOT when searching for "surname given") 3. click SEARCH - highlights words in list that match search term Advanced search - when not sure of the spelling use (and to check spelling variations that might have been used) 1. Click search then Advanced Search 2. Click options - filtered words - enter wildcard term such as sm?th in the "WordWheel filter" box for search string 3. click OK ===== CONTINUE FOR EASY OR ADVANCED SEARCH ====== 4. Scroll through list looking for persons with right name, in right state, if known - OR use up and down arrow keys to move to next/previous items after a search 5. When found, double-click on camera to get linked window then click on camera icon in this new window to see the scanned book image 6. Zoom control bottom left to increase page size for readability Scanned page images also include: - pension certificate number (to order from NARA) - full name - post office address of pensioner - cause for which pensioned - monthly rate - date of original allowance - county and state where pensioner resided (in section headers or can copy it from the index page) - volume and page number pertaining to the pensioner (cross-reference to volume/page at top left needed for citations) 7. click X to close the image window
