SWIFT
CEMETERY OF NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TEXAS |

Swift Cemetery is located 8 miles east of Nacogdoches on TX
Highway 7 toward Center, Texas. It is next to Hopewell Baptist
Church. Facing the highway mounted to a chain link fence is a
small green sign with the cemetery name.
The first known and documented burial
there is THOMAS HAMILTON LAMBERT born 1802 in North Carolina,
died December 31, 1857 buried at Swift.
Each community has a meeting house
where 5 days a week they had a one-room school, grange meetings
on Saturday night and Sunday services.
We cannot prove anything before Texas
got its independence. On September 21, 1859, then
governor I. H. Runnels gave to Samuel B. Barron 160 acres
headright for his loyalty to the state, located at the corner of
the cross roads of the Martinsville/Nacogdoches road and the
Melrose/Henderson road starting in the center of said roads and
going east toward Martinsville and going south towards Melrose.
This gave the north boundary line and the west boundary lines.
Both roads are still in existence and have not been moved.
Samuel B. Barron married Phebe Barber
and to this union was born a daughter Sarah Elizabeth that later
met and married a Confederate soldier, Thomas Drayton Lambert,
son of Thomas Hamilton Lambert. They moved to the Swift
Community and her father Samuel B. Barron donated 1/2 acre to be
used for a cemetery where Drayton's father was buried. Later
Drayton's mother, Mary Lambert was buried next to her husband.
Samuel B. Barron and his wife Phebe Barron are buried at Swift
also. Year later Sarah and Drayton were also buried in the swift
Cemetery.
In 1928 CHESTER and CLAUDIA BENTLEY
Pace bought the 59 1/2 acres east of the 1/2 acre donated for
the cemetery. As space ran out on the first amount donated, he
was asked to give another 2 grave wide strip, which he did for
many years. There was never any money exchanged, so there is not
a deed to the cemetery. His donation is about 2 acres more or
less.
Buried here are Confederate soldiers,
World War I, World War II and later vererans of all wars. At one
time Martinsville buried quite a few there because they had not
started a cemetery in their community. Most are friends and
family members of local families.
