MOUNT HOREB COMMUNITY CHURCH AND SCHOOL, PRESS COMMUNITY, NACOGDOCHES CO, TX

Mount Horeb is the correct name of the community church and school located 3 miles south of Loop 224 (SE Stallings Drive) on the Press Rd (FM 2863). In the GNIS (Geographical Names Information Service) database its name has been corrupted to "Hobabod Church". The land on which this church stands was originally part of the Pedro Esparza grant and was later owned by my gg-grandfather Asa Moore and his descendants. Asa Moore's daughter-in-law, Minerva King Moore, wife of James Jones Moore, donated the land and a building was constructed that has served as both a community church and school. In the 1890's through about the 1940's, Mount Horeb was a typical East Texas one-room schoolhouse.

Here is a photograph of the students circa 1905 including my grandmother Amelia Lillian MOORE, her sisters and cousins. The church has been home to several local congregations over the years, the most recent being the Church of the Good Shepherd. A Press Reunion for all of the families who lived or still live in the Press or Press Switch area, including MOORE, FAIRES, LEWIS and BOOZER is held on the Church grounds on the first Saturday in June each year. It includes a brief business meeting with a report from the cemetery committee, followed by a pot luck luncheon and lots of fellowship and reminicing.
