EMHOUSE FARMER DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY AUTO Henry E. Burt, aged
58 years, farmer of Emhouse died in the Navarro Clinic Friday morning at
3 o’clock following an illness of several weeks dating from the time he
was struck by an automobile north of Corsicana. The funeral was held
Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Methodist church at Emhouse with
interment in the Pattison cemetery. Rev. Bell of Chatfield conducted the
services. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Terrell, Corsicana;
Mrs. Mattie Day, California; and Mrs. Will Moore, Moran; one brother, R.
C. Burt, California; and a half-brother, Albert Washburn, Oklahoma.

Farmer and R. H. Harris. The funeral was directed by the Sutherland
Funeral Home.

Funeral for Son of Power Company Head to Be in Corsicana Tuesday
John W. Carpenter Jr., 19, son of the president of the Texas Power & Light Company, died at Seton Infirmary, Austin, Sunday at 12:35 p.m.
from injuries received in an automobile accident on Oak Hill road four miles west of Austin Saturday night. Young Carpenter was a sophomore at the University of Texas.
Justice Howard Amason Jr., Roswell, N. M., fellow student who was riding in the car with young Carpenter, died twenty minutes before John Jr.
Funeral services will be held for young Carpenter in Corsicana, where his father's parents are buried, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Dr. Thomas W. Currie, pastor, Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Dallas, and president Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, will conduct the services.
Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery, Corsicana. There will be services at the grave, but no church services. The body was taken to Corsicana Sunday afternoon.
He is survived by his father and mother, who were at his bedside; a brother, Benjamin Howard Carpenter, 12, and a sister, Mrs. Dan C. Williams Jr., Dallas.
Young Carpenter was an honor graduate of Highland Park High School and an honor student at the university. He was secretary of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In his freshman year, he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, freshman honorary fraternity for men. He was taking a pre-law course.
Pallbearers will be Roy Sewell Jr., Houston; Ben Sewell, Houston; Gardner Duncan, Eagle Lake; Al Dealey, Dallas; Tom Carpenter, Dallas; William Wofford, Dallas; all cousins; Sam Webb Jr., Dallas; Howard Williams Jr., Waco; Woolford McFarland, Galveston, and David Currie, Dallas.
The fatal automobile accident occurred as Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Amason were returning to Austin from Kerrville where they witnessed the Kerrville-Port Arthur semifinal State high school football championship playoff. Their car, driven by John J., driven by John Jr., was in a head-on collision with a car driven by Fletcher Young, Oak Hill. Mr. Young is at the point of death at the same Austin hospital where Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Amason died. Three other occupants of Mr. Young's car, all residents of Oak Hill, fifteen miles west of Austin on the Fredericksburg road, were injured but not seriously.

Funeral services for Henry Dee Byrd, 64, were held Saturday at Lamar and Smith Chapel, 800 West Jefferson. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery at Corsicana.
Byrd, an accountant in the sales department of The Texas Company thirty-two years, died at his home, 3201 Ledbetter, Friday. He had been ill two years. He would have been 65 years old next Saturday and would have retired Jan. 31.
Byrd was born in Corsicana and joined The Texas Company in Houston in 1918 after working for a time in the Houston post office. He was transferred to the company's Denver office in 18922 and came to Dallas in 1934.
He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Miss Lizzie Byrd and Miss Minnie Byrd, and two brothers, W. W. Byrd and Charles W. Byrd, all of Corsicana.

Dallas marine Corporal Dies
Corp. James Robert Byers, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Byers, 5440 Vickery Boulevard, died in a naval air hospital at San Diego, Calif., Sunday from a head injury sustained while serving in the Marine Corps, a victim of a hit-and-run driver, relatives here have been advised.
Mrs. Howard Murdock, 4517 Junius, a sister, said her parents were advised Sunday he had been injured and left immediately for the coast, but she was advised of his death while they were en route to California.
Byers was walking with a group of Marines near Grossmont when struck. E. A. Turner, coroner's deputy, said the driver did not stop.
He was a graduate of Corsicana High School [1937], where he spent most of his life and moved to Dallas with his family six years ago. In addition to his parents and Mrs. Murdock, he is survived by a brother, Hiram C. Byers, also of Dallas.
Mrs. Murdock said he had served in Iceland and had returned to Dallas on a furlough about two weeks ago.

Byers, 67, farmer, who died at his home in the Roane community Thursday, were held Friday from the Methodist Church at Emhouse, with burial in the Emhouse Cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. T. G. McGlathney of Corsicana, Mrs. E. C. Ragsdale of Big Spring, Mrs. J. B. Pritchett of Montfort; two sons, R. A. Byers of Trinidad and Marvin Byers of Barry.

ROANE FARMER TO BE BURIED FRIDAY EMHOUSE CEMETERY
A. W. Byers, 67, native of Tennessee, farmer, died at his home near
Roane Thursday morning at three o’clock and the funeral services
will be conducted at the Methodist church at Emhouse Friday
afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in the Emhouse cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. T. G. McGlathney, Corsicana;
Mrs. C. E. Ragsdale, Big Springs; Mrs. J. B. Pritchett, Montforth;
two sons, R. A. Byers, Trinidad; Marvin Byers, Barry, and other
relatives.
The funeral will be under the direction of the Sutherland Funeral

Corsicana Woman Dies On Her 83d Birthday

CORSICANA, Texas, Dec. 22. - Mrs. Laura Butler, 83, died at her home at 10 o'clock Saturday morning.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Joe E. Glenn, pastor of the Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alto.
Mrs. Butler died on her birthday. She had lived in Corsicana two years, but had been a resident of the county fifty-two years, most of which she had lived in the Emhouse community.
Surviving are two sons, Joe Butler of Goodlett and Frank Butler of Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Allen of Kirkland, Mrs. Albert Foster of Corsicana; a brother, Henry Moffett of Alto; a sister, Mrs. Annie Landrum of Emhouse; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.

Youth Surrenders After Man Cut Dies
CORSICANA, Texas, Nov. 1. - Elmer Cowart, 18, surrendered to county officers
Thursday afternoon, who had warrant for his arrest on a murder complaint in
connection with the death of Marlin B. Burns, 27, who died early Thursday
morning after receiving several knife wounds in an altercation here
Saturday. Cowart had been at liberty on a charge of aggravated assault since
the difficulty. They reside several miles south of Corsicana.
The body of Mr. Burns was sent to Blooming Grove, where burial will be made
Friday.

YOUTH SURRENDERS FOLLOWING DEATH OF MAN HE SLASHED
Elmer
Cowart. 18. surrendered to Deputy Sheriffs J. M. Westbrook
and Ira T. Stokes Thursday afternoon and was lodged in the
Navarro county jail on a complaint of murder filed Thursday
in Judge S. B. Jordan's court in connection with the death
of Marlin B. Burns, 27,
who died early Thursday morning at the Navarro County
Hospital.
Burns had
been in the hospital since last Saturday noon when he
received several knife wounds in the back in an altercation
on North Beaton street when the two men became engaged in a
difficulty in which the fathers of the two men, J. E. Cowart
and T. J. Burns were
engaged. After first aid treatment, Burns was taken to the
County hospital.
The body of
Burns was forwarded to Blooming Grove Thursday, where
interment was made Friday.
The two
older men and young Cowart reside in the Shady Grove
community while Marlin Burns resided near Ward Bridge. Soon after
the difficulty last Saturday, Cowart surrendered to city
officers, later being turned over to county officers and
released on bond on a charge of aggravated assault. He
telephoned officers early Thursday that he would meet them
on the Pursley concrete slab and surrender Thursday
afternoon. Friday
morning nothing had been said concerning bail or examining
trial for the accused youth, and it was intimated that he
will remain in jail for the time being.
Burns is
survived by his wife, two small children, father and other
relatives. An operation was performed soon after Burns
reached the hospital. It is not known whether the grand jury
which has been in vacation for several days, subject to
being recalled by the court, will reconvene to investigate
this case.

ELMER COWART IS RELEASED ON $2500 BOND IN
SLAYING
Elmer Cowart, aged 18, was released from the Navarro county jail
Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock on bond in the sum of $2,500 on a formal
complaint of murder in connection with the death of Marlin B. Burns, 27,
who died in the Navarro County Hospital early Thursday morning. Burns
received several knife wounds in the back in an altercation here a week
ago. An operation was performed.
Cowart surrendered to county officers Thursday afternoon on the murder
complaint. He had been at liberty on bond on a charge of aggravated
assault prior to the death of Burns.

MURDER TRIAL IS SET FOR DISTRICT COURT ON MONDAY
The trial of Elmer Cowart for murder in connection with the death of
Marlin Burns, scheduled in the district court for Monday, will not be
taken up, District Judge Hawkins Scarborough announced late Friday
afternoon due to the defendant being ill with pneumonia. Judge
Scarborough stated that the special venire of 50 prospective jurors
summoned for service in this case had been excused.
Burns died in the Navarro county hospital several days after receiving
knife wounds in the back on Beaton street, Oct. 27, 1928. The trouble
occurred near the Coulson Drug store about noon.
Both men resided several miles southwest of Corsicana at the time of the
trouble. It is said that the fathers of the two men were engaged in a
fisticuff just prior to the fatal stabbing of Burns.
Cowart later was released on bond after spending several days in jail.

CHARGED WITH DEATH OF MARLIN BURNS IN CORSICANA LAST FALL
The trial of Elmer Cowart, farmer, on an indictment for murder in
connection with the death of Marlin Burns, farmer, last fall, got under
way Monday in the Thirteenth Judicial District court and at 2 o’clock
Monday afternoon only three jurors had been selected. From the line of
questioning of the prospective jurors, a suspended sentence will be
asked.
Burns died in the Navarro county hospital last fall several days after
receiving severe knife wounds in the back, alleged to have been received
in an altercation with Cowart in the business district of Corsicana.
Both resided in the Oak Grove community and the two families were
neighbors. It is said that the fathers of Elmer Cowart and Marlin Burns
were engaged in a difficulty and that the younger men became involved.
The state announced ready for trial Monday morning. The defense
attorneys announced not ready but their motion was over-ruled by Hawkins
Scarborough, district judge, who ordered the trial to proceed. The
defense sought a continuance due to the absence of certain eye-witnesses
to the altercation.
J. C. Caffey of Angus was the only juror selected at the Monday morning
session of court but J. H. Bryant and J. C. Allen, both of Corsicana,
were selected shortly after noon Monday.
The state is being represented by J. S. Callicutt, Fred Upchurch,
special prosecutors, and by H. B. Daviss, county attorney. The defense
is represented by John R. Curington, local attorney, and L. W. Sheppard,
Groesbeck attorney.
The courtroom was crowded at the morning session and large numbers were
on hand at the afternoon session.
Witnesses were excused Monday morning until 3 o’clock Monday afternoon
during the selection of the jury, but Monday afternoon indications were
that the introduction of testimony would not get under way until late if
before Tuesday morning.

STATE RESTED IN TRIAL OF COWART IN DISTRICT COURT
CHARGES OUTGROWTH OF FATAL STABBING ON CORSICANA STREET
The state attorneys in the trial of Elmer Cowart for the fatal cutting
of Marlin Burns here Oct. 27, 1928, during an altercation following a
scuffle between the fathers of the two youths, announced that the state
rested its case at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and the defense
attorneys immediately began the introduction of testimony. Eight state
witnesses had testified.
Burns died in the Navarro County Hospital several days after receiving
the severe knife wounds and Cowart was indicted by the grand jury for
murder. He was arrested and remained in jail some time after he was
indicted by the grand jury.
Harmon Chandler of Eureka, former deputy sheriff of Navarro county, an
eye-witness, was the first witness called by the state. Other witnesses
were Jim Richie, Jim Christie, Mr. Haynie, Mrs. McNeill, Dr. H. H.
Panton, Mr. Burns, the father of Marlin Burns, and Mrs. Marlin Burns.
The first defense witness to testify Tuesday afternoon was J. A. Colburn
of Eureka, another eye-witness.
When arranged Tuesday morning after the indictment had been read, the
defendant entered a plea of not guilty to the charge.
From the line of questioning of the prospective jurors Monday, it is
expected that a plea for suspended sentence will be asked in the event
that the jury finds the defendant guilty.
Both families resided in the vicinity of Oak Grove community and were
neighbors.
The jury in the case was completed late Monday afternoon and is
composted of the following men:
J. C. Caffey, Angus; J. H. Bryant, Corsicana; J. C. Allen, Corsicana; R.
C. Wyatt, Kerens; Edgar Metcalf, Corsicana; Sol Gottlieb, Corsicana; H.
C. Griffin, Corsicana; Jack Berry, Dawson; J. L. McCulloch, Dawson; J.
W. Beeman, Drane; J. W. Glass, Black Hills.
When the defendant was arraigned Tuesday morning, he entered a plea of
not guilty to the indictment for murder.
The state is being represented by H. B. Daviss, county attorney, and the
firm of Callicutt & Upchurch, special prosecutors; L. W. Sheppard of
Groesbeck and John R. Curington, Corsicana, are defense attorneys.
The courtroom has been crowded with interested spectators since the
opening of the trial Monday morning, with a liberal sprinkling of
spectators in the balconies.

ARGUMENTS OPENED IN ELMER COWART TRIAL WEDNESDAY
JURY EXPECTED GET MURDER CASE IN DISTRICT COURT LATE TODAY
The arguments of the attorneys in the case of the State of Texas vs.
Elmer Cowart for the alleged slaying of Marlin Burns was in progress in
the
Thirteenth District Judicial court Wednesday afternoon and the case will
be in the hands of the jury late Wednesday afternoon.
Testimony was concluded at the morning session and the charge of
District Judge Hawkins Scarborough was presented to the jury, H. B.
Davis, county attorney, opened the arguments Wednesday afternoon.
Large crowds were attending the trial Wednesday afternoon as has been
the case since the case started Monday morning.
Neither state nor the defense used all of the witnesses which were
summoned in the case.
Cowart is being tried on a murder charge indictment in connection with
the death of Marlin Burns who died in the Navarro county hospital
several days after receiving severe knife wounds in an altercation in
the business district of Corsicana when the two men became involved in a
difficulty in which their fathers, Tom Burns, and J. E. Cowart, were
involved. The cutting scrape occurred Oct. 27, 1928. Both families
resided in the Shady Grove community.
Witnesses Used.
The witnesses used in the trial Tuesday after 2:30 o’clock by the
defense included J. E. Colburn, W. D. Colburn, Mrs. C. Anderson, Coy
Patterson, Raymond Graham, C. Lee Jones, Elmer Cowart, the defendant;
Dr. A. B. Worsham, Mrs. Sudie Anderson, Ruthie Herrell, State witnesses
Tuesday afternoon included Dr. Worsham, Albert Lane, Hubbard Bryan, A.
C. Kent, S. J. Fuller, V. O. Fuller, Jack Humphries and Clyde Wilkes,
county jailer.
The first witness called Wednesday morning was Roy Foster by the state,
Jim Richie, who testified Tuesday, was recalled. The belt alleged to
have been worn by Marlin Burns at the time of the trouble was introduced
as evidence by State Attorney Fred Upchurch and was identified as being
the same worn by Marlin Burns by Tom Burns, father of the slain man. The
state announced that their case was completed at 10:15 o’clock Wednesday
morning.
After the introduction of the testimony of Everett Barcroft the defense
rested.
The state was represented by Callicutt and Upchurch, special
prosecutors, and H. B. Daviss, county attorney. The defense was
represented by John R. Curington of Corsicana and L. W. Sheppard of
Groesbeck.
When arraigned Tuesday after the completion of the jury, the defendant,
Elmer Cowart, entered a plea of not guilty.

SEVERAL WITNESSES IN MURDER CASE ARE INJURED IN WRECK
Six witnesses en route to Corsicana Wednesday morning to attend the
trial of Elmer Cowart for murder in connection with the death of Marlin
Burns were injured when the car in which they were riding turned over
about ten miles southwest of Corsicana.
Those injured were Mrs. Ann Bailey, Irene, broken collarbone; Jim Jones,
broken collarbone; Ruthie Herrell, Mrs. Jim Jones, Johnnie McNeil and
Boy McNeil, severe bruises and lacerations. The infant of Mr. and Mrs.
Jones was uninjured.
All of the occupants of the car except Mrs. Bailey reside in the Shady
Grove community.
The Dodge car in which the witnesses were riding was badly wrecked. The
car got out of control and when the brakes were applied, turned over.
The occupants were picked up by other witnesses en route here and
brought to the Navarro clinic where they were given medical treatment.
None of those injured are thought to be seriously hurt.

JURY GIVES COWART 5-YEAR SUSPENDED SENTENCE THURSDAY

The jury in the trial of Elmer Cowart reached a verdict about 9:30
o’clock Wednesday night finding the defendant guilty of murder and
giving him a five-year suspended sentence. District Judge Hawkins
Scarborough pronounced sentence on Cowart and he was released.
Cowart was indicted and tried for murder in connection with the death of
Marlin Burns in a local hospital several days after receiving knife
wounds in the back during an altercation which occurred in the business
district of Corsicana, Oct. 27, 1928. The fathers of the two youths, J.
E. Cowart and Tom Burns, had engaged in a fisticuff and the two younger
men became involved in the trouble.
Both families were neighbors in the Shady Grove community at the time of
the trouble.
The trial was witnessed by large crowds, including many women and girls,
from its beginning Monday morning in the Thirteenth Judicial district
court. The jury was secured during the first day and testimony was
introduced Tuesday and most of Wednesday morning. The charge of the
court was given at noon Wednesday and on Wednesday afternoon was
consumed by arguments of the attorneys. The case was given to the jury
Wednesday afternoon at 5:18.
A special venire of petit jurors was summoned for the case.
Neither the state nor the defense used the entire witness list summoned.
The state was represented by H. B. Daviss, county attorney, and J. S.
Callicutt and Fred Upchurch, special prosecutors. The defense attorneys
were John R. Curington, Corsicana, and L. W. Sheppard Groesbeck.

CORSICANA, Texas. Oct 14. - Funeral services for Mrs. L. C. Burns, 79, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Allie Young, four miles north of Corsicana, were held Sunday. Burial was made in the Cool Springs Cemetery, Van Zandt County.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Allie Young of Corsicana, Mrs. Sarah Burns of Terrell, Mrs. Mollie Burns of Kaufman, Mrs. Willie Wilburn of Tundra and Mrs. Mary Burns of Corsicana; two sons, W. F. Burns and Alvin Burns of Corsicana.

Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Jewell Dale and Mrs. Thelma Dollias, all of Paris; three brothers, Ed and Evans Hampton of Antiers, Okla., and Bill Hampton of Corsicana. She was a native of Hunt County.

CORSICANA, Texas, Sept 1. - Amiel Bristow, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bristow, died at the family residence Sunday. Funeral services were held from the home Monday, with the Rev. R. A. Crosby, pastor of the Eleventh Avenue Methodist Church, conducting the service. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, and a brother and sister.

Body of Orphsns' HOme Superintendent Taken There The body of Dr. W. L. Bringhurst, superintendent of the State Orphans' Home, who died yesterday afternoon, left here this morning at 9:25 o'clock for Bryan for interment. The body was accompanied by Mrs. Bringhurst, Miss Nettie Bringhurst, wife and daughter of the deceased, and William R. Houston and Harris Houston of Teague, W. B. Parker of Kerens, Will Conner of Corsicana, Jack Sanders of Frost and Judge John H. Rice of Corsicana, members of the State Home board, also accompanied the body. A large number of the children of the home followed the remains to the depot and many of them shed tears as the body was being placed on the train. Dr. Bringhurst was 68 years old and was born in Alexandria, La., but had lived in Texas for many years.

Miss Florence Bright, Teacher, Passes Away

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church Friday at 10:30 a.m. for Miss Florence Bright, 80, teacher in the Corsicana public schools for fifty years, who died at her home in Beaumont about 9 o'clock Wednesday night. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
She completed fifty years as a teacher in Corsicana several years ago and since 1927 has made her home in Beaumont.
Survivors include a brother, W. T. Bright of Beaumont.
Miss Bright was a member of the first teaching staff in the Corsicana schools, having been elected to that position in 1882. The first public school building in Corsicana was erected in 1881 on the site of the present high school. It was the next year the City Council elected J. T.
Hand, Brenham, as the first superintendent. Miss Bright was one of the six teachers to serve under Mr. Hand.

CORSICANA, Texas, Dec. 31 - Mrs. H. G. Brown, in charge of crippled children's work in Navarro County for a number of years, died of a heart attack in a local hospital Sunday after a several days' illness with influenza. Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist Church Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Mrs. Brown was reared in Dallas. Surviving is her husband, H. G. Brown, local merchant.

Corsicana, Tex., Feb. 10 - Two old and prominent citizens of Corsicana died today in the personages of Capt. J. W. Burgess and Dr. A. N. Witherspoon. Major Burgess was for a number of years superintendent of the I. O. O. F. Widows' and Orphans' Home, a position which he recently resigned.
Dr. Witherspoon has long been a resident of Navarro County and for several years made Corsicana his home, where he continued his practice up to the
time of his fatal illness. He was 84 years of age.

Shortly afternoon today Dr. A.N. Witherspoon passed away
at his home on West Fifth avenue at the advanced age of
seventy-six years, his death being caused by a severe
cold and la grippe.
Dr. Witherspoon had resided in this county for half a
century and was well-known throughout the country,
having practiced medicine ever since his residence here.
He was a surgeon in the Confederate Army in the War of
the Rebellion.
At this hour no arrangements have been made for the
funeral services.

Well Known Citizens Laid To Rest in Oakwood Today
Dr. A.N. Witherspoon's funeral took place at 1:30 this
afternoon at his residence on West Fifth Avenue and a
large concourse of friends were present at the last sad
rites.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. M.C. Johnson and
the remains were interred in Oakwood cemetery.
Deceased was a pioneer in Navarro county and was a man
who held his friends by those qualities which go to make
the true man. In peace or war, he was at his country's
service and played well his part. A loyal citizen, a
loving father, a devoted husband and a most estimable
man, he passes to his reward, leaving behind the record
of a useful life and character which will long remain in
the hearts of those who knew him.
He was survived by a widow and the following sons and
daughters.

Dr. Witherspoon and Mr. Burgess Pass Away
At 11:30 this morning Mr. J.W. Burgess, Superintendent
of the Odd Fellows widows' and orphans' home, succumbed to an attach of
pneumonia after a brief illness.
Mr. Burgess was very ill last week, then improved and
became worse Wednesday night, partially recovering yesterday. A nurse
was placed at his side yesterday, but his condition became dangerous
last night.
Mr. Burgess was well known here and has held offices of
public trust, having ably filled the office of city marshal among
others. Seven years ago he was appointed superintendent of the I.O.O.F.
Home and he has filled that position in a most admirable manner, the
institution being a model under his administration.
His death was unexpected and was a severe blow to his
many friends. At this hour no arrangements for the funeral have been
made.

Well Known Citizens Laid To Rest in Oakwood Today
CAPT. J.W. BURGESS
The Odd Fellows', Woodmen of the World and a large
number of friends assembled at the home of Mr. Walter
Burgess this afternoon to pay their last respects to the
memory of Capt. J.W. Burgess, whose unexpected death
occured yesterday morning at the Odd Fellows' home of
which he was superintendent.
The funeral service was a beautiful one, led by Rev.
G.L. Bitzer and participated in by the Odd Fellows and
Woodmen in their impressive ritualistic work. The body
was interred in Oakwood.
Although the deceased had always led a useful life, his
greatest usefulness began several years ago when he
became manager, instructor and all, but father, of the
little wards of the Odd Fellows' Grand Lodge. No man
could do a nobler work than be in training the minds and
moulding the characters of these children.
Under his wise and patient management the Home became a
home indeed and stands today a model for much
institutions.
The deceased is survived by a widow and one son, Walter,
who is one of the city's prominent young business men.

Funeral services for Audley L. Brittain, 62, who died in the Veterans Hospital in Waco, were held from the Frost Methodist Church.
Native of Jacksonville, he resided at Frost twenty-five years. He was making his home in Dallas at the time he became ill.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Greer, Dallas, and Mrs. Charles Greer, Irene, and five grandchildren.

FROST, Dec. 15.—(Spl.)—Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p. m.
from the First Methodist church for Audley L. Brittain. 62 who died
Friday at the Veterans Hospital, Waco.
The services were conducted by the Rev. Milton Slayden, pastor of
the First Methodist, assisted by the Rev. C. C. Ellis, pastor of the
First Baptist church. Burial was in the Frost Cemetery.
A native of Jacksonville, Brittain was making his home in Dallas at
the time of his death. Previously he had resided in Frost 25 years.
He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Greer, Dallas; Mrs.
Charles Greer, Irene: a sister and five grandchildren.
Members of the Frost Legion Post were pallbearers. They were, P. L.
Woolley, W. E. Bowman, Grover Smith, Jewel Smith. Joe Parum, and
Otis Dickson.

Mrs. Brown died Friday at her home.
A native of Dawson, Navarro County, Mrs. Brown was a Dallas resident for 40 years. She was active in Red Cross, Community Chest and polio fund campaigns, and was a past president of the Parent-Teacher Associations at O. M. Roberts and J. L. Long schools.
Mrs. Brown was a past matron and charter member of the Electra Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and a Past Noble Grand of the Metropolis Rebekah Lodge.
She also was a past president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service at the Owenwood Methodist Church, of which she was a charter member. She was a member of the board of the Rainbow Girls Assembly No.
33 of Dallas, and belonged to the Social Order of Beauceant and the Dallas Story League.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Samuel L. Brown Jr. of Dallas; a
daughter, Mrs. Lillian Edwards of Garland; two brothers James L. Gammill and John D. Gammill, both of Lubbock; a sister, Mrs. Carter Lee Ragland, and her mother, Mrs. Lily Gammill, both of Lubbock and a granddaughter.
The Rev. J. P. Fleming, assisted by the Rev. Hargrove Grounds, will conduct funeral services. Burial will be in Grove Hill Memorial Park.

A Sudden Death
Corsicana, Tex., Dec. 6. - At 9 o'clock this morning, after being in apparent good health, Prof.
Johnson D. Bush, an old and highly respected citizen of this city, dropped dead in the presence of his family at the family residence on West Eighth street. Prof. Bush is well-known in educational circles, and was a man held in high esteem by all who knew him. His death resulted from heart failure.

died in Waco early Wednesday night. Funeral services were held at

Dresden cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. F. T. Fisher. Mr. Call
had gone to Waco Sunday for a visit. Surviving are his wife of
Dresden; a son, Dr. S. F. Call, Waco; a brother, J. A. Call,
Corsicana, four grandchildren, and other relatives. Mr. Call was
born in Mocksville, N. C., and had been in Texas 57 years. He had
resided at Dresden 46 years. McCormick Funeral Service directed the
arrangements.

Charlie L. Call, aged 84 years, who died Wednesday night at 9 o'clock at
the home of his son, Dr. S. F. Call, at Waco. Services were held from
the Dresden Methodist church with Rev. Fisher, pastor of the church
conducting the rites.
Mr. Call was born in North Carolina, coming to Texas at an early age. He
was a resident of the Dresden community for many years, and was loved
and respected throughout the community.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Dr. S. F. Call of Waco, and other
relatives.

Dresden Cemetery.

R. J. Buckalew, 81, Retired Planter, Passes in Dallas
R. J. Buckalew, 81, of 2708 Pennsylvania, who in 1886 brought the first seeds of the famous Kolb watermelon to Texas from Chambers County, Alabama, where a friend had spent many years on a neighboring plantation perfecting the melon, died Saturday.
The Buckalew plantation was one of those old-time relatively independent establishments that not only produced crops but ginned its own cotton, processed practically all of its food and made most of its clothes. Upon moving to Navarro County with his family Mr. Buckalew raised mostly cotton and corn and specialized in fine melons.
He retired twenty years ago and moved to Dallas.
Surviving him are three sons, R. J. Buckalew Jr. and R. E. Buckalew, both of Dallas, and A. H. Buckalew of Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. H. R. Ponder of Emhouse, Navarro County; two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Jack of Dallas and Mrs. Eva Hart of Stevens, Ark.; three brothers, S. J.

Britton - Corsicana, Texas, July 8. - E. E. Britton, 42 years old, died here yesterday morning and burial took place this afternoon in the Hamilton Cemetery. The Odd Fellows had charge of the services. He was formerly a machinist in the employ of Johnston & Alkin and is survived by his wife and five children.

BRITTAIN - Corsicana, Texas, Feb. 22. - J. D. Brittain, 73, a native Texan and longtime resident of the Pettys Chapel community, died at noon Thursday, and funeral rites will be held Friday at 10 a.m., burial in the Hamilton Cemetery. He is survived by the following children; Mrs. Ada Voss, Oklahoma City; Mrs. D. E. Jones, Hamlin, Texas; Dewey Brittain, Refugio, Mrs. Cannie Sumner, Refugio; Mrs. Bill Roland, Refugio; Mrs. R. S. Barahill, Houston; Mrs. F. W. May, Kerens; Mrs. W. F. Langridge, Corsicana; W. B. Brittain, Vinson, Ok,; and Mrs. James Winkler, Longview.

CORSICANA, Texas, June 21. - Q. L. Bridges, 60, retired REA safety instructor, formerly of McKinney and Corsicana, died in Waco Friday night.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Missionary Baptist Church here with burial in the Hamilton
Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Q. L. Bridges Jr. of Waxahachie and Homer Ray Bridges of Waco; a daughter, Mrs. Helen May Peters of Waco, and six grandchildren.

CORSICANA, Texas, Nov. 23. - Funeral services for Eli Briggs, 81, of Teague, who died Saturday, were held in Teague Sunday. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery here Sunday afternoon. Surviving is his wife of Teague, the former Miss Willie Scarborough of Corsicana.
