John Henry
Dillard
July 18, 1933 - May 25, 2011
John
Henry Dillard, 77, cherished husband, father, grandfather,
brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and lifelong Texan, died May
25, 2011, surrounded by loving family and friends while
visiting in Austin.
John was born in a two-room shack on the W.C. Stroube farm
east of Corsicana on July 18, 1933. He attended Pettys
Chapel, Phillips Chapel, Winona, and Powell elementary and
middle schools and graduated Kerens High School in 1950. He
enjoyed three years working at P&S Pharmacy and Adams Hat
Company, and then worked for Mr. W.C. Stroube on the farm
and ranch under the supervision of his beloved Uncle Charles
William (Buddy) Cotten until he entered Texas A&M University
in 1956. At A&M he was housemaster of two of the largest
dormitories on campus, Walton and Hart Halls, and served as
president of the Navarro County A&M Club, organizing some of
the best parties in the club’s history and earning many
on-campus awards. After graduation he worked for Southwest
Sprayer & Chemical of Waco, Chevron Chemical Company of
Dallas, Monsanto Chemical of St. Louis, Mo., Kaiser Chemical
Company of Memphis, Tenn., and W.R.Grace, Nitrogen Products,
Western Operations of Amarillo. At W. R. Grace he was
advertising and promotion manager, which he said was his
most pleasant job because he met so many life-long friends.
In 1970 he began working for the Texas Employment Commission
in Bryan. In 1978 he transferred to Austin, where he retired
in 1992.
He was married to three wonderful, beautiful, and talented
women: Peggy Williams, the mother of his sons Gary Dennis
and Scott Alan; Pamela Harle, the mother of his son Marc
Taylor; and Eva Sue (Black) Cavin.
He met and married Sue in 1978 and they were happily married
until Sue’s death in 2010. Sue was a great mother to the
boys and an inspiration to all who knew her. John said, “She
gave me love, wonderful companionship, and understanding.
She truly was ‘The Wind beneath my Wings’ and the love of my
life. Every day I was privileged to be in her presence,
which lifted my spirits and gave me a reason to live. Some
of the darkest moments can remind you of some of the
happiest days of your life.”
John and Sue’s 32 great years of marriage came with lovely
surprises and many joyous occasions. “With the friends Sue
and I had together, the list would be longer than any book.
As for me, I've lived my life with reckless abandon at
times. After Sue came into my life, I became a loyal friend,
a straight, honest, faithful, and loyal husband, and have
tried diligently to be good father to my children and a
friend to all I've met.”
John is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Franklin
Dillard; mother, Pauline Oleta (Cotten) Dillard; and wife,
Eva Sue (Black) Dillard.
Survivors include his brother, Charles David Dillard of
Roane,; sons, Gary Dennis Dillard of Corsicana, Scott Alan
Dillard of Pasadena, Calif., and Marc Taylor Dillard and his
wife Paige of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Chase Raymond
Dillard of Oklahoma City, and Benjamin Macy Dillard and Ava
Nicole Dillard of Pasadena, Calif.; sister-in law, Peggy Sue
Dillard of Roane; niece, Amanda (Dillard) Polk and
grandniece Teela Polk of Roane; aunts, Hazel Cotten and Vera
Dillard; many cousins; and many wonderful friends and
associates.
Events celebrating John’s life are planned for Austin on
Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the home of Penny and Stacy
Reynolds; and in Corsicana at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011,
at The Kinsloe House.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in
John’s name to the Navarro County (Texas) A&M Club. A
scholarship fund is now being established. |

FUNERAL SERVICES
MRS. ALMA CAMPBELL
HELD AT EMHOUSE
Funeral services for Mrs. Alma Edna Campbell, aged 31 years, fatally
injured Monday night when the automobile in which she was riding
turned over several times after leaving the pavement near the
Corsicana Country, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from
the First Baptist church in Emhouse. The rites were conducted by
Rev. Dan Sharpley, pastor of the church. Burial was in
Emmett cemetery.
Mrs. Campbell, accompanied by her four-year old daughter, Carolyn
Ballew, by a former marriage, was en route home to Emhouse from
Corsicana when her car plunged over an embankmbent, went through a
fence and telephone post, turned over and hurled her body some 35
feet from where the car came to a stop, according to statements by
Richard Perkins, 418 South Thirteenth street, Corsicana, who with
Miss Margaret Petty of Corsicana, discovered the wrecked automobile,
the lifeless body of the victim and the little child, unhurt and
nestling in the arms of the mother. Perkins said the child was not
excited or perturbed when he arrived. The body of Mrs. Campbell and
the child were brought to the P. and S. Hospital. It was estimated
that Mrs. Campbell was killed about 9 p.m. and the body was
discovered at 10:45 p.m. Sheriff Cap Curington and State Highway
Patrolman Byron Currin investigated the accident.
Fifteenth Auto Fatality.
Mrs. Campbell’s death was the fifteenth auto fatality in Navarro
county during 1945.
Officers and others investigating the circumstances surrounding the
accident were at a loss to explain how the mother was hurled such a
distance and that the child escaped injury, unless the woman had
clutched her child at the time of the accident and miraculously
broke the impact of the fall with her own body, saving the child.
Surviving are her husband, J. E. Campbell, U. S. Armed Forces home
on furlough; four children, James Ballew, Keith Ballew, Joy Ballew
and Carolyn, all of Emhouse; father T. M. Morgan, Emhouse; three

Gertie Marie (Johnson)
Lockhart

March 17, 1923 - May 25, 2011
Corsicana
—Gertie Marie Lockhart passed away peacefully on Wednesday,
May 25, 2011, at her home in Corsicana, after a lengthy
illness.
Marie Lockhart was born March 17, 1923, to George Washington
Johnson and Bessie (Brown) Johnson in Emhouse. She was the
middle of three daughters. Gertie is preceded in death by
her older sister, Mildred (Johnson) Drain. Marie and Wendell
farmed near the community of Emhouse after their marriage in
1942, until their move to Elm Flat in Kerens around 1959.
They continued to farm in Kerens until 1998. After
retirement they moved to Corsicana. Marie was a hard worker
who helped Wendell on the farm and she liked to say she
could drive a tractor as well as anyone.
The family remembers Marie as a loving and devoted wife,
mother, and grandmother. One of her sons, Kevin, felt
especially blessed that his mom understood his love for cars
and motorcycles. Wendell and Marie bought his dream car as
their family car, a bright orange 1970 Road Runner, during
his latter high school days. He is also grateful to his
mother for taking him to worship at Powell Baptist Church as
a child. Kevin and his wife Kris, have fond memories of
playing spirited games of Wahoo with Marie and Wendell
before the grandchildren came along.
Marie was the best mother Ted Lockhart could have ask for
and she always pushed to have the best care for him. She
wanted to be involved in all the details of his life, all
the way down to his haircuts.
Her grandchildren, Lane and Todd, always knew they were in
for a great meal when they came to Mamaw and Papaw’s house
and they also knew exactly what it would be — chicken fried
steak that had been pounded so tender it would melt in your
mouth, along with mashed potatoes, and pinto beans.
In Marie and Wendell’s later years their great joy was their
weekly bingo trips with Marie’s sister, Jimmie Sheppard, to
Ennis or Trinidad. Marie and her sisters were the best of
friends and have supported each other unfailingly throughout
their lives.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Wendell Gerald
Lockhart; sons, Kevin Lockhart and wife Kris of Deer Park,
and Ted Lockhart of Corsicana; grandchildren, Lane Lockhart,
and Kyle Borrello of Ft. Worth, and Todd and Bryanna
Lockhart of Hesperia, Calif.; great-grandson Pierce Lockhart
of Hesperia, Calif.; sister, Jimmie Sheppard of Corsicana;
she is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to nieces,
GeorgeAnn Meyer and husband Darell of Kemp, and Gena
Chandler of Corsicana, Hand in Hand Hospice of Corsicana,
and caretakers, Gina Rosa and J.J. Johnson.
Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27,
2011, at Corley Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at
Resthaven Memorial
Park with the Rev. Otis Conner officiating. Pallbearers
will be Kyle Borrello, Darrell Meyer, Stephen McNutt, Obie
Lee Lockhart, Joey Lockhart and Cole Taylor. The family
requests memorials to the Texas Department of Mental Health
and Mental Retardation.

J. R. Burns Passed Away
J. R. Burns, aged 88 years and five months, passed away in this city
Saturday morning. Deceased was a member of the Baptist church, a
Mason and ex-Confederate soldier. In the church he was an exemplary
member, in the lodge a true member, in war brave. As husband,
father, citizen he had no faults. His life was a big life- big in
deep, full of activity and full of labors performed and harvests
gathered. No greater love hath any man than he for country, liberty
of thought, unbridled speech and the varied avenues doing valiant
service for mankind the world over. His life was full grown as
measured by years, for in deed had he traveled far beyond the
allotted three score and ten. But life never grew burdensome to him.
He carried well his age and in his feeble state during the past year
he grew, as ripe fruit, mellower and sweeter in sentiment and
altogether beautiful in his home life.

Mrs. M. E. Vandiver 91 Passed Away July 29th
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Vandiver passed away Thursday morning, July 29,
1926, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mollie McCormick.
Deceased had been ill for several weeks, but during it all she
complained but little maintaining her brightness of mind almost to
the very last. Having gone far past the age marking an octogenarian
she climed in age to the dizzy heights, storing along with years
knowledge and piety. But one of the important senses was lost in the
journey toward the home across the great divide, that of sight. That
sterling character and unwavering fidelity for truth which
characterized her life forty, fifty and sixty years ago remained
fixed in her heart throughout her long career, guiding her thoughts,
mellowering her soul with ripening of years.
Mrs. Vandiver during the days of her eyesight was a wide reader,
studious, and this gave her a broad vision as well as depth of
thought. She was very entertaining touching world events and a Bible
scholar far above the average.
She was a loyal Missionary Baptist, a member of the Central Baptist
church; strong of Baptist conviction and to her no pleasure was
greater than to have part in helping and strengthening every branch
of the church from the local organization through the varied
national interests, on (illegible) foreign fields. She was a
dependable member, a loyal supporter and a cheerful giver, and you
know "the Lord loves a cheerful giver."
Mrs. Vandiver was born in Lebanon, Tenn., Dec 1834, making her 91
years and seven months old. Her mother as a girl was Elizabeth
McDaniel and Elizabeth married Miner Fullerton, the latter dying
when Mary Elizabeth, the subject of this sketch, was only seven
months old. In 1839 the mother and Mary Elizabeth moved to Hot
Springs, Ark., later to Texas. Mary Elizabeth was married to George
