After graduating from Corsicana High, my dad went to Texas A&M
as a
Mechanical Engineering student. The war interrupted his education. Dad was
a B-24
reconnaissance pilot in South America, Australia, New Guinea, and the
Philippines. After
the war dad went back to A&M and graduated. At the Rice-Texas
A&M game in 1946, dad met my mother Shirley Watkins of Houston. A year later
they married. After stops in Tulsa and Waco, they settled in Dallas.
After years with Browning–Ferris ( before it was a waste / trash company ) as a
sales manager in heavy road equipment, dad and his partner started
McCarthy-Sowell in the Farmers Branch area of Dallas.
They had three
children, Jim, Tom,
and Beth. Like his father, dad had diabetes. This along with tuberculosis added
to an early death at age 54 on January 12, 1975.
