former Sadie Hiler of Blooming Grove. Entered service in 1939.
Served with the 69th Coast Artillery. Ft. Crockett 2nd Infantry Div., Ft.
Sam Houston, San Antonio, Camp McCoy, Wise, Camp Kilmer, N.Y. Served in N.
Ireland, Cardill, South Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, Czechoslovakia.
Received Bronze Star, Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, American Defense, Good
Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and French and Belgium Fouragere.

JR.
Cpl. Otis Duane Hill, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis D. Hill of Frost.
Graduate of Frost High School. Entered service in 1945, training at Fort
Hood, Killeen, Texas. Died in an accident in Japan in 1946. KILLED IN
MILITARYNotes:

EDWYN HINKLE
Edwyn Hinkle, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hinkle of Blooming Grove reported to
U.S. Marine Depot at San Diego, Calif. on Sept 26, 1939. Left North Island
Marine Bks. for Treasure Island to board the Marine Transport Henderson which
was to oversee transportation of U.S. material to the shop President Harrison on
Dec. 8, 1941. The Harrison ran aground outside Yello River, China where
the U.S. Marines were captured and held captives within China until liberation
August 23, 1945, then flown to Corpus Christi, Texas Naval Hospital.

Lt. Henry P. Hodge, Jr., son of Henry Pope and Marietta Mizell Hodge.
Husband of Martha Joanne Pittman Hodge. Attended Univ. of Texas.
Enlisted Dec. 1942, training at O.T.C., Austin, Miami, Fla., San Diego
Calif. Served in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Staunch (A 307), a Navy
minesweeper and anti-submarine escort ship. Received the American Theater
Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars, Philippine
Liberation Medal, Vicotry Medal, Discharged July 29, 1946

O.C.S., Ft. Benning, Ga. Assigned to 80th Inf. Div., Camp Forrest, Tenn. Assumed
duty of Co. Cmdr., Cannon Co. 319 Reg. of 80th Div. Served in the European
Operations, France, Germany, Bastogne, Luxemburg, Austria. Received Commendation
for Leadership, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Infantry Combat Badge and Campaign
Ribbon with 6 Battle Stars.Notes:

FWAAF and McCloskey Hospital, Temple, Texas for the duration of the war.

Graduate of Blooming Grove High School. Entered service October 6, 1942.
Served in England on a B-17 for 28 missions over Germany. Also flew rescue
missions from Pacific Islands in the final phase of the war.

HOLLIDAY
S/Sgt. Carl Garner Holliday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee D. Holliday of Dawson.
Graduate of Dawson High School. Joined the 18th U.S. Naval Const.
Battalion in July 1942. Trained at Norfolk, Va. 18th Battalion joined the
2nd Marine Div. and shipped out to the South Pacific and stayed there 32 months.
They were in the Solomons, Gilbert and Mariana Islands, on Guadalcanal, Tarara,
Saipan, and Tinian. Received Presidential Citation. |
