EDWYN HINKLE Edwyn Hinkle, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hinkle of Blooming Grove reported to U.S. Marine Depot at San Diego, Calif. on Sept 26, 1939. Left North Island Marine Bks. for Treasure Island to board the Marine Transport Henderson which was to oversee transportation of U.S. material to the shop President Harrison on Dec. 8, 1941. The Harrison ran aground outside Yello River, China where the U.S. Marines were captured and held captives within China until liberation August 23, 1945, then flown to Corpus Christi, Texas Naval Hospital. CARL GARNER HOLLIDAY S/Sgt. Carl Garner Holliday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee D. Holliday of Dawson. Graduate of Dawson High School. Joined the 18th U.S. Naval Const. Battalion in July 1942. Trained at Norfolk, Va. 18th Battalion joined the 2nd Marine Div. and shipped out to the South Pacific and stayed there 32 months. They were in the Solomons, Gilbert and Mariana Islands, on Guadalcanal, Tarara, Saipan, and Tinian. Received Presidential Citation.

Enlisted with the U.S. Navy March 15, 1943. Served in South Pacific 1944-1945. Re-entered Navy in 1946, and retired as a Lt. Cmdr. in 1969.
