New Hope Church
This Cemetery, and the
adjoining New Hope Baptist Church,
were first established when pioneer settler Joseph Wren
donated five acres of land in 1875 for use as a community
cemetery. The Church congregation had been meeting in a
log building two miles northeast of the Cemetery site and
moved to its present location the same year. The name 'New
Hope' was suggested by Mattie Brookshire. The first
interment in the Cemetery was that of an infant girl, Mary
Suddeth, in 1876. A schoolhouse that was situated on the
land was torn down in the 1920's. An annual homecoming of
descendants is held there each May.
