This information is from the Las Sabinas magazine, Vol 4 Summer 1978 book 2 & Vol 5 Summer 1979 book 2.

A partial listing of the tax roll for that 1852 assessment of Orange County included:


Adams, Rhoda 
; 320 acres, valued at $400 in the Jos. Polly survey on the Sabine River; total value, 4400; 60 cents state tax; 30 cents county tax.

Allen, Elijah ; 461 acres, valued at $696, in the William Allen survey on the Neches River; 3 horses, valued at $150; 100 cattle, valued at $500; total value $1345; 50 cents, poll tax; $2.51, state tax; $1.15, county tax.

Allen, George, and Allen, Hannah : 590 acres, valued at $295 in the William Allen Survey on the Neches River. George Allen was credited with 11 horses valued at $220 and 350 cattle valued at $1,750. Total value for both was $2265, plus 50 cents for poll tax for George Allen. State tax for both was $3.09 and the county tax was $1.94.

Ashworth, William, Sr. : 1043 acres, valued at $1,043 in the William Dyson Survey on Cow Bayou; 2179 acres, valued at $1,089 in the Gilbert Stevenson Survey on the Neches River; and 200 acres, valued at $100 in the John Jett Survey on Cow Bayou. The tract on the Neches River was apparently the Ash- worth homestead as personal property was listed here including two Negroes, valued at $1,500; 35 horses, valued at $525; and 600 cattle valued at $3,000. One of the other tracts was probably under a share cropping con- tract or lease with a man named East who had 18 cattle valued at $90. To- tal value was $7,347; State Tax, $10.88, County Tax $5.44.

Ashworth, Luke : 64 acres, valued at $800 in the William Dyson Survey on Cow Bayou; 60 horses, valued at $1,200; 900 cattle valued at $4,500. Total value, $6,500; Poll Tax, 50 cents; State Tax, $10.25; County Tax, $5.12.

Alexander, Thomas K. ; no property; poll tax, 50 cents; State Tax, 50 cents; County Tax, 25 cents.

Ashworth, Aaron, Sr.; 916 acres, valued at $916 in the Stephen Jett Survey on Adams Bayou; five negroes, valued at $2,500; six horses, valued at $150; 50 cattle, valued at $250; total value $4,554; Poll Tax, 50 cents; State Tax, $7.33; County Tax, $3.66. Also, 1,476 acres, valued at $718 in the Aaron Nelson Survey on Cow Bayou; 30 horses, valued at $300; 180 cattle, valued at $600; tools valued at $35; Total value, $925; Poll Tax, 50 cents; State Tax, $1.88; County Tax, 94 cents. A third listing under this name was for Charles G. Garrett who apparently lived on part of Aaron Ashworth's property.

Ashworth, Clarke; 130 acres, valued at $135 in the C. West Survey on Cow Bayou; six horses, valued at $90; 25 cattle, valued at $125; total value, $340; State Tax, 51 cents; County Tax, 25 cents.

Arthur, Lucinda; 240 acres, valued at $120 in the C. West Survey on Cow Bayou; total value $120; State Tax, 18 cents; County Tax 9 cents.

Barnes, Harrison ; tow lots, town of Madison, valued at $300; total value, $300; poll tax, 50 cents; state tax 95 cents; county tax, 67 cents.

Hunt, Charles S.;160 acres, valued at $300 in the H. B. Longley survey on Adams Bayou; 2 horses, valued at $150 in the Mary Dalvin survey on Sabine Lake; total value, $450; Poll tax, 50 cents, state tax, $l.75; county tax, 58 cents.

Orange County assessment made for the year 1852 was discovered by Virginia Musemeche, historical survey researcher between the pages of county tax book for city lots dated 1904-1977. The assessment was made by Worthy Patridge, assessor and collector for Jefferson County "of property rendered by citizens thereof, and situated therein." It was received July 6, 1853 by Asa L. Stark who had been named assessor and collector for the new county of Orange which had been formed from a portion of Jefferson and created by an act of the Texas Legislature on Feb. 5, 1852. The average value of land was set at 75 cents per acre and a recapitulation of property situated in the county showed the following:
