Services for Loston Ree Benton Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 9, 2002, at Stanmore Funeral Home Chapel with evangelist Elzie Williams Jr. officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. Mr. Benton, a chef, was born in Panola County to Frank Sr. and Ida Briggs Benton. Survivors include two sons, Lawrence Benton of Lake Charles, La., and Loston Ree Benton Jr. of Lewisville; two sisters, Dorothy Fuller of Lexington, Ky., and Bertha Carr of Longview; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; niece Evelyn Sentell of Longview; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

BLACK, C.O. Jr.

CARTHAGE — A memorial service for C.O. Black Jr., 73, of Spring will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Calvary Hill Funeral Home Chapel in Spring. Carthage arrangements are by Lipsey Family Funeral Home. Mr. Black, a retired Pennzoil engineer and a U.S. Navy veteran, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Houston. He was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Elysian Fields.

Mr. Long died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002. Arrangements are by Jimerson Funeral Home, where visitation is 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today. Mr. Long died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 in Nacogdoches. He was born Nov. 3, 1918.

Dale Reed, Steve Ramsey and Bruce James officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery. Mr. McDaniel, a carpenter and a member of Northside Church of Christ, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002.

MIMS, Loyd

Services for Loyd Mims, 90, of Longview will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Mims and the Rev. Charlotte Riddle with a eulogy by Mark Mims. Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery in Henderson. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Mr. Mims died peacefully in his sleep at his home.

Mr. Mims was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Henderson to Albert and Cora Lee Mims. He was a farmer and was with the Department of Agriculture through the Rusk County Oil Mill and Fertilizer Works. He married Betty Ramsey Nov. 5, 1948, and moved to Wichita Falls, where he owned and operated several barber and beauty shops and was also in real estate.

Retiring in 1979, he moved back to East Texas and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Longview.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Foster, John and Sam Mims, and a sister, Bessie Mae Standard, all of Henderson; a grandson, Wesley Vaughn Riddle of Dallas; and special grandson Danny Loyd Mims of Las Vegas.

Mr. Mims is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty Mims of Longview; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patsy Mims of Las Vegas, Pastor Larry and Carol Mims of Franklin, Tenn., and Mark and Vickie Mims of Pittsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Charlotte and Marshall Riddle of Harleton; one sister, Elsie Lee VanSickle of Henderson; his brothers-in-law, Ferris Ramsey of Carthage and Buddy Ramsey and his wife, Movelda, of Henderson; a sister-in-law, Sybil Morton of Odessa; numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Betty Reeves and Robbie Butler of Odessa; nine grandchildren, John Beall, Barbara Beall, Cheryl Bond, Carrie Lewis, Martin Mims, Jake and Matthew Mims and Heather and Leslie Mims; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and special friends Chase and Scott Martin and B.W. Brantley. Honorary pallbearers will be Angus Mims, Jacob Mims, Billy Barton, Buddy Ramsey, Ferris Ramsey, H.D. Standard, James Barber and David Castle.

Visitation for family and friends is 5-7 p.m. today, Feb. 13, at the funeral home.

MOODY, Mark Edwin

Services for Mark Edwin Moody, 42, of White Oak will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Nunn and Father Bob Blessing officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Moody died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002.

Mr. Moody was born Jan. 31, 1960, in Longview. He was a glazer for Longview Glass.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Moody of White Oak; two daughters, Ashley and Halie Moody of White Oak; one son, Christopher Moody of White Oak; three sisters, Tammy White of Overton, Shelby Fierros and Nikki Clark, both of Longview; one brother, Marlin Moody of Ore City; his mother, Dixie Clark of Longview; one uncle, Homer Murray; two aunts, Darlene Drake of Tatum and Jo Jo Nichols of Kilgore; one niece, Kristy Fierros of Longview; one nephew, Chase Smith of Longview; and nieces and nephews, Bridgett, Brianna and Blake Moody. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Thaxton and Samantha Murray; one daughter, Courtney Moody; and one niece, Shena Pepper.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, Feb. 10, at the funeral home.

ODEN, Corrie Nell

Graveside services for Corrie Nell Oden, 73, of Tatum will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 18, at Tatum Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Nichols officiating. Services are entrusted to Welch Funeral Home, 210 S. Green Street. Mrs. Oden died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Oden was born Nov. 7, 1928, in the Darco community in Harrison County to Roy and Ruby Hayes Matthews Williams. She was a lifelong resident of the Tatum and Lake Cherokee area. Mrs. Oden was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tatum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Oden, in 1993.

Mrs. Oden is survived by one daughter, Dee Nell Swanner and her husband, Mike, of Tatum; one brother, Cecil Williams of Tatum; one grandson, Kevin Oden and his wife, Kim; and three great-grandchildren, Zach, Austin and Jake Oden, all of Longview.

ODEN, Donald

KILGORE — Services for Coach Donald “Donnie” Oden, 64, of Kilgore will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Highland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Scott, the Rev. Riley Pippen and Rory Dukes officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Zion Cemetery in DeBerry. Coach Oden died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at his home.

He was a graduate of Carthage High School. Donnie earned his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University while attending school on a baseball scholarship. He received his master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Mr. Oden taught and coached four years in San Augustine before coming to Kilgore. Coach Oden touched many lives in the 29 years at Kilgore High School.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Del Oden of Kilgore; a son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Carla Oden of Kilgore; a daughter, Vonn Oden of Dallas; his brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Sandra Oden of DeBerry; a sister and brother-in-law, Toby and Mack Monday of Kilgore; his brother-in-law and his wife, Ernest and Sue Eaves of Greenwood, La.; two grandchildren, Ryan and Madison Oden of Kilgore; his nephews, Walter, Ronnie and Stevie Oden and Michael Eaves; his nieces, Teri, Angela and Susan; two aunts, Eloise Martin and Maude Cloe Studdard; and 14 first cousins.

The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. today, Feb. 19, at the funeral home.

SMITH, Mary Effie

HENDERSON — Services for Mary Effie Smith, 89, of Tatum will be held at the First Baptist Church of Tatum at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, with the Rev. Don Griffin, the Rev. Michael Wright and the Rev. Gerald Griffin officiating. Interment will be in Harmony Hill under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home in Henderson. Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in Longview.

She was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Tatum. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Tatum and was a schoolteacher for 33 years. She attended East Texas Baptist University, the University of Colorado, William & Mary University and Sul Ross University. She received a bachelor of arts degree from East Texas State University. Mrs. Smith was a charter member and a lifetime member of Tatum Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis R. Smith; a sister, Margaret Murray; and her parents, R.E. “Doc” Young and Minnie Belle Menefee Young. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, C. Larry and Nancy Smith of Tatum, Ross Menefee Smith of Houston and James R. and Patricia Smith, also of Houston. Survivors also include five grandchildren, Suzan Stanfield and her husband, Steven, of Denver, Tate Smith of Tatum, Curt Smith of Tatum, Allison Smith of Houston and Christine Smith, also of Houston, and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Paige Stanfield of Denver.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at the funeral home.
