| Letter
from David Dickson to Hon'ble Henry Clay, Secretary of State, Washington June 4, 1826 |

|
Rec'd. July 1
Port Gibson, Miss 4th June 1826 Hon. H. Clay Sir I had the honour to address you a note on the 2nd Instant in relation to the Consular appointment at St. Antonio. Accounts received from the northern boundary of Texas recently gives no account of the Indian disturbances related by the Gentleman from Mexico. Mr. Reid in a letter bearing date the _____ advises me of my appointment to St. Antonio: On reflection I have thought it best to signify my intention to accept believing that the government will not expect me to hazard the lifes of myself and family, Should the Indians be actually waging war to any considerable extent. I should nevertheless be greatful for the appointment at Refugio should Mr. Smith resign. The Indians ______ are doubtlessly of much more Importance than at St. Antonio De Bexar. In thus ob..ding myself for favour from the department I hope to be excused, and can only offer as an apology the assurance Mr. Reid had given me that Mr. Williams and himself had been pleased to speak favorable of me to the President and yourself. I have the honour to be Respectfully, Your obt. Humble Servt. David Dickson. |
