John Dunn was a Power & Hewitson colonist. He was one of the leaders of the Refugio Colony, having been alcalde, judge, etc. He was an outstanding patriot during the Revolution. Served in the Congresses of the Republic of Texas, was Senator in one Congress. Said to have been a school teacher by profession. He served in numerous other county offices. Dunn left the County about time of annexation, and tradition has it that he went to Gonzales County. He has no descendants in the County at this time, and we have been trying to locate them. There are several old Irish families of Dunn at Corpus Christi, with whom contact has been made, but they say they are not of Refugio John Dunn's family. As a Colonist John Dunn received a league of land on the San Antonio River, Abstract 24, October 8, 1834, Patent 63, Volume 17. Also a town lot in the Town of Refugio. The deed records show disposition of this property as follows: (1) December 11, 1845, John Dunn, of New Orleans, Louisiana, deeded to Colonel James Power "all his right, title and interest in and to a House and Lot on which it stands situate in the Mission of Refugio, in the Republic of Texas." Acknowledged before Wm. Young Lewis, Notary Public in and for New Orleans, December 1, 1845, 6-44. (2) Deed dated February 24, 1877, John and Stephen Dunn, of Lavaca County, Texas, grantors, "sole surviving heirs of our deceased father, John Dunn, late of Refugio County, "to Thomas O'Connor, conveying one league, being the same granted by Mexico to John Dunn, September 22, 1834, grant recorded A, 139, 180-181, Deed Records, Deed Recorded Vol. L, pp. 249-251 Refugio County Deed Records. In March 1877 Stephen Dunn resided in Dewitt County. Executed in Victoria County, confirmatory record. |
