Investigation by Indians of Refugio Mission of cannon shots near the coast.

"There is no reply until that he may give report of the results that the investigation which he states may have.

"By a report that has been brought from two different parties of civilians that were traveling in chasings of mustangs, and they say they have heard two cannon-shots in the direction of the coast, and through lack of troops in this quarters, I have ordered to go in the morning to the Mission of Refugio , and to ask that six to ten Indians of the most intelligent and faithful that they go out from it, to make a careful investigation of all the coast, and to find out from whence said cannon shots originated.

"Our Lord preserve Your Lordship many years.

"Bahia del Espiritu Santo, January 6, 1799.
