1790 This is the 1790 census or the jurisdiction of La Bahia del Espiritu Santo and was originally published by The Institute of Texan Cultures. In 1998 Trey Holt was given permission to bring this very important collection of early Texas source material to the Internet where it will be freely available to researchers. It is included on this site because many of the residents had connections to Refugio County. This census enumerates the Spaniards and the Indians separately, and it further breaks down the population by those who are married, widowers, widows and single. The material has been divided here into several parts for the convenience of faster loading. |

1846 Poll List - Part I - A through F 1846 Poll List - Part II - G through L 1846 Poll List - Part III - M through R 1846 Poll List - Part IV - S through Z I have transcribed the county poll lists for Refugio, Goliad,
San Patricio and Victoria Counties because during this early period our
ancestors migrated and boundary lines changed. Since the population of Refugio Co. in 1840 was not sufficient enough to warrant tax assessment, this poll list for 1846 is the first record for Refugio Co. to serve in lieu of a census record. As Texas was a Republic in 1840 and not part of the United States, there was no federal census as for the other states. |

Search
the 1880 census for the entire U.S. for free. This is a direct link to the LDS page - all you have to do is enter your names!! This is a wonderful research tool, but I caution you to be creative with name spellings. Transcribers, not being familiar with names in the various counties, often made errors even if the enumerator had spelled the name correctly. The real asset is that once you have located an individual, there are two links on the right side of the page. One will take you to the household and list all of the people in it, and the other will take you to the person before or after the individual in the census. Once you are in a household, you can go to the previous or next household. Try it out - it is a lot of fun!! |
