Home Guard Units during the Civil War

During 1861 several volunteer companies were raised in Refugio County.  The first formed was the Refugio Guards, which mustered into service in May.  Following are the various companies' rosters as found in the State Archives.  If there is a link, use your browser's "find" button to locate the name on the linked page.  

Refugio Guards

Colville, Daniel Cryer, Isaac Decker, Robert Driscoll, Daniel Drummond, James Hart, John Madden, Amos Martin, Robert Martin, Zachariah Martin,  N.R. McDaniel, Dr. William P. McGrew, Jeremiah O'Driscoll,  S.W. Reed, Henry Scott, W.B. Shaw, William St. John, T.C. Stuhbs, Thad W. Swift, Dr. P.A. Thurmond, A.J. West, Benjamin F. West, and Michael West.

After the Refugio Guards disbanded, most of the men joined other units. Captain Dan Doughty formed a Spy Company, and some of the men joined him.

St. Mary's Home Guard
