Biographical Sketches - N

    NALE, JAMES FRANKLIN, son of James N. and Betty Jones Nale, was born March 23, 1905 in Bedias, Grimes County, Texas.
   In 1907 the family moved to New Baden in Robertson County where he attended school and grew into young manhood.  His father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Jacksonville, Texas.
   In 1929 he moved to Hearne where he was employed by the Pacific Fruit Express Company.  In 1930 he was employed by the Gulf Oil Corporation agent in Hearne and continued this employment until 1942 when he accepted employment with the Creamer Bus Lines and later was with the Arrow Bus Lines.  He purchased a service station on the corner of Market and Third Streets in Hearne in 1945.
   He was married to Miss Lucille Crowder, daughter of Frank Allen Crowder and Ora Winn Crowder, October 13, 1926 at Franklin, Texas.  Mr. and Mrs. Nale have a daughter, Louise Nale who married Dr. Roy Parker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
   Mr. and Mrs. Nale are members of the Baptist Church and Mr. Nale is a member of the Hearne Lions Club, the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge of Hearne, the Hearne Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Hearne Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for over twenty years.
   Mrs. Nale is active in Hearne business circles and is a partner in the ownership of the Dixie Cafe with her brother W. E. Crowder.

NEELY, TRAVIS HUNTER, son of Jessie Austin Neely and Josephine Tucker Neely, was born July 28, 1898 at Iola, Texas.  He attended school at Iola and Plantersville, Texas.
   From 1918 to 1920 he served as Agent for the Santa Fe Railroad Company and from 1920 to 1950 he was a telegraph operator for the Humble Pipe Line Company at Chilton, Texas.  From 1950 to 1951 he served as telegraph operator for this same company at Groesbeck, Texas.
   He moved to Hearne, August 6, 1951 to continue his employment as a telegraph operator for the Humble Pipe Line Company station in Hearne.  On August 1, 1958 he retired from active duty with the Humble Pipe Line Company after completing nearly 38 years of service.
   He was married to Leona Porter, daughter of Dee Caswell Porter and Mattie Louis Dickson Porter of Lott, Texas, June 25, 1932.  The marriage was performed at Eddy, Texas.  Leona Porter Neely attended the Lott, Texas public schools and was graduated from Lott High School.  She received her college work from Southwest State Teachers College at San Marcos, Texas.  After finishing her college education she taught at the Corinth School at Buckholts, Texas in 1926-27 and taught in the Lott Public School in 1927 through 1934.  During the time she attended the Lott Public School, a former Hearne teacher, Frank Hodges, was one of her teachers.  She later taught school with him in the Chilton public school.  Leona Porter Neely serves as a substitute teacher in the Hearne public schools.  She is a descendant of F. 0. Porter, a pioneer surveyor of Falls County, Texas and the organizer and Director of the Old Settlers Re-Union of Falls County.  She is a member of the First Baptist Church of Hearne and a member of the Hearne Parent-Teachers Association.  In 1940 she served as President of the Chilton, Texas Parent-Teachers Association.
   Travis Hunter Neely is a member of the First Baptist Church of Hearne; a member of the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge; and served on the Board of Education of the Chilton School District for ten years.  His father, Jessie Austin Neely, was an early settler of Grimes County, Texas who served as Tax Assessor-Collector for that county from 1918 to 1932.
   Two children were born to Travis Hunter Neely and Leona Porter Neely: a daughter, Marilyn Jo Neely, who married Richard H. Colby; and a son, Travis Porter Neely.  Grandchildren of Travis Hunter Neely and Leona Porter Neely are: Ricky Colby and Cathy Lynn Colby of Eau Claire, Michigan.

    NEW, JOHN CHARLES was born in Hearne, Texas in 1884 and was the son of J. G. New and Rosine New.
    He attended school in Hearne and when he was quite a young man he became associated in business with his uncle, Charles Later, and continued this business connection throughout his lifetime.
    In January 1908, Mr. New was married to Miss Martha Cobb, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Albert G. Cobb of Hearne.
    Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. New: a daughter, Margaret New Boelsche, and a son, Charles Later New; one grandchild, Charlene New, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Later New.
    Mr. New was in the farming and ranching business in and around Hearne for many years.  Both he and Mrs. New were members of pioneer families of Hearne.
    John Charles New died December 15, 1931.
