TERRY/ HINTON/
Paul A. Carter Wed Aug 04 1999 11:37 PM
I am looking for information  J. W. TERRY who married Mrs. Mahala Ann HINTON on Sept 20, 1861 in Robertson County.  I am wondering if he could be the same person who was known as William TERRY in Jack County, TX who married Flora Ann VANHOOSER in 1866.   In one land transaction in Jack County, William TERRY (husband of Flora Ann) was listed as "J. William TERRY".  This William TERRY has been a real mystery man.  In the 1870 US Census, William TERRY and Flora Ann had several children:    Aaron , aged 9;  Louis, aged 8;  and Thomas, aged 5 who would have been from a previous marriage.  I have my genealogy on the web at http://www.rmi.net/~pacarter. I am looking for the parents of Thomas Madison REAGAN, and his siblings, John, Dick, and Eula B. REAGAN. There may have been other children. Thomas Madison (my great grandfather) was born in Robertson County, I believe near Hearne, in 1868. His mother died and he was raised by a stepmother, but I do not know their names. His brother, John, became a Church of Christ preacher. His brother, Dick, moved to Trinidad, Colorado in the 1930s. Thomas M. REAGAN married Maude FARRAR in Meridian (Bosque County) in 1889. They are both buried in the Hico Cemetery, in Hamilton County. I know there are lots of REAGANS in Robertson County. I just don't know which ones may have a common ancestor. Thanks for any help you can give. Lana Reagan Robinson, 10002 Forest View Drive, Waco, TX 76712-3111

HUNTER/ McCUISTION/ DUPUY
Ernest E. Hunt IV Sun May 2 1999 11:28 AM
In the mid 1840's, Gilbert Marshall HUNTER (1825-1863) left Tennessee and settled in Robertson County.  He married Naomi McCUISTION, daughter of Robert N. McQUISTION, there in 1847.  In 1858 he was joined by two half-brothers, William Robert HUNTER (1840-1862) and Joseph Love HUNTER (1842-1926).  All three brothers joined the Confederate Army, and only one brother, Joseph, survived the war.  He married his brother's widow, Naomi, in 1867; she died in 1869, and then he married Sarah Matilda DUPUY (1849-1911), daughter of Dr. Jonathan Ethelbert DUPUY, in Robertson County in 1870.

I have assembled a web site on the HUNTER family that should be of interest to those researching this family.  The address is http://www.mindspring.com/~eehiv/hunter/hunter.htm   Sincerely, Ernest Hunt eehiv@mindspring.com

BAIN/ CAVITT/ COVITT
Jeanne Bain Mon Apr 5 1999 6:09 PM
I am trying to locate were Harvey and Havanna BAIN died.  Family story says that while moving to a different area the parents (Harvey and Havanna) were killed by indians and the children William Calhoun BAIN and Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth BAIN were taken in by a family named CAVITT/COVITT in the Hearne or Wheelock area. I have been told that the CAVITT house is
still standing and is possibly a historic house in the Hearne area.    I know by the tax records that the Bain's were in Washington County until 1859.  Then William Calhoun BAIN appears on the 1880 census in Burleson county.  Possibly in the Robertson county on the 1870 census but the name was hard to read. Are there court records that date back to the 1860's for death or placing children with a family after the parents died?  Are there any newpapers or church records that would go back to the 1860's?   Do you have any suggestion of where I might search?

1867-DEATH-Robertson Co., TX, 22 Jun 1867.

The Historical Records of Frankford, KY, says Joel moved to Mulenburg Co., KY, in 1800, and later died and was buried in Robertson Co., TX.

Family Source: Family Bible of Jesse Isaac Van Cleave, In possession of Zona Van Cleave Hopkins[1960].

Joel went with his father in 1808 to the Shaker settlement in Pleasannt Hill, Mercer, KY, staying a few years before going out in the world on his own. He is listed on the 1813, 1815, 1816, 1817, 1819, 1820, 1821, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825, 1827, and 1828 Kentucky State Tax Lists as living in Mulenburg Co., KY, and owing 1-3 horses, and 100 acres of land at Cypress Creek. On 10 Nov 1834, he had this tract surveyed. On 12 Jan 1836, he mortgaged this tract for $238.56 On 25 Aug 1838,he had 129 acres on Cyprus Creek surveyed. On 21 May 1841, he sold this 129 acres. On 19 Oct 1841, he had 36 acres on Cypress Creek surveyed. On 2 Nov 1842, he sold 236 acres of land on Cyprus Creek. On 21 Oct 1855, he sold 100 acres of land located in Daviess Co., Ky. It is thought that he moved to the opposite side of Green River into Daviess Co.,KY, as a result of his pro-union stand on the issues which led to the Civil War. The Green River seemed to be the dividing line between the Unionists and Secessionists. He was the administrator to the estate of his son-in-law James Madison Dossett on 28 Apr 1855 in Daviess Co., KY. Probably the families of Joel [including his sons William, Peter, and John, and the children of his deceased daughter, Sarah], Jonathan, Alfred, Elijah, and Elizabeth Wall comprised the five covered wagons which rendezvoused at Abraham's farm prior to their departure for TX. They probably left in June or early July and arrived in early October, 1855. It is thought that they stopped a short time in Arkansas. It is also beleived that members of the Suggs and Stringer families either traveled to TX with Joel or arrived there shortly before him. They may have stopped in Smith Co., TX. on their way to Robertson Co., TX.

Am trying to find if anyone knows or can get information on who is buried in the Heads cemetery, located in the north part of Robertson county, just over the county line from Kosse. (Limestone and Robertson) I have a few names already, SEALE, BIRD, BURLOGH, and WALTER. Also if anyone knows about restoring old cemetery as this is in need of repair. It is located in what was Headsville, as in 1880 at one time had a post office which was run by a J. G. Adams. apparently after the civil war, it slowly closed down, Also a James A. Head supposedly is buried there, James was in the 6th Congress House of Representatives, Republic of Texas, and also a Justice of the Peace. This and more information came from a Robertson county history book at the Library,  My sister and I have been trying to locate our gg grandfather's grave, Ruben B. VEST, if anyone could contact us if they have any graves on their land, unmarked ones or maybe marked ones that they know of, my email is space@mexia.com    Thank you, also anyone that knows who owns the land where the Heads Cemetery is also, it's back off the road a bit. Hopefully clean up around it and a fence could be not a bad idea to keep the cows out. Thanks. Brenda McDaniel.

I have found this information and am looking for more information concerning the offspring of this union.  From Robertson County, Texas Marriages , Miss Mackey O. MCCANDLESS married  Joseph G. LAWRENCE on Oct. 25, 1849. My Great, Great Grandfather was John Richard McCANDLESS, this Mackey O. McCANDLESS could perhaps be his Aunt or Great Aunt.  I am gathering information on any and all McCANDLESS families in Texas up to about 1860. John Richard McCANDLESS was born in 1869 in Texas and his mother was Dicy C. (for Cordelia I think) or Dicie C. (Maiden name unknown).  Dicy was born in August of 1842 in Alabama.  From Census records I can project that Dicie married Mr. McCANDLESS about 1861-2.  Their children were Lee or Leander McCANDLESS, Nannie or Nancy and John Richard. Both James and Napoleon MCCANDLESS are enumerated in the 1860 Census in Robertson Co. Dicy or Dicie Cordelia (maiden name unknown) married a McCANDLESS in about 1862 and they had Lee or Leander McC, Nannie or Nancy b. abt. 1867 and John Richard b. 9/17/1868-9.  All the children were born in Texas and Dicy was born in Alabama in 1842.  Dicy had remarried a J.S. DANCER by 1871 in Texas and in 1880 was living in Smithville, Bastrop Co. but was widowed.  By 1900 she had remarried a man named CAPERTON but was living in the home of John Richard McC in Lytton Springs, Caldwell Co. MONK, Alfred Frederick b. 1 Dec 1852 London, England md. Leona Sophronia WIGGINS ca 1878 somewhere in TX. She had resided in Leon, Freestone Cos. before marriage.  After marriage she and Alfred and family are enumerated on the U.S. census population schedules the TX counties of 1880 Robertson, 1900 Lavaca, 1910 Montgomery and 1920 DeWitt.   They were said to have owned/worked in a beer brewery.  The 1910 & 20 census shows Alfred managed a Pool Hall, so I suppose that is where the brewery story came.  1880 showed occupation as a baker. Their known children born 1879-1893:  Annie, Emily, Edward, Albert, Lonie and Roy. Have info to share about this couple's ancestry, but know little about the children and have but one blurry photo of Leona and her brother Tom taken ca 1915.  Would like to exchange information and obtain photos of this family.

Sawadi2u Tue Apr 07, 1998 12:36 PM
GRIMES, PATTERSON  -  seeking ANY information pertaining to family of grandfather William Andrew GRIMES, b. about 1878 in Robertson county. According to 1880 Census, he was living with his parents, George M. and Anna (PATTERSON) GRIMES, and 2 other children, both named John!  George was the son of Andrew Jackson and Ellen (NICHOLS) GRIMES, of Ellis and Austin counties. Nothing is known of Anna's family except for family rumor that she was at least part Indian, and that the couple lived in a tent on a creek bottom near Bremond.  When William Andrew was about 5 years old, his father died.   His mother supposedly left him in the custody of a Justice of the Peace named REEVE(S) and disappeared, taking William Andrew's younger sister Dora, never to be seen again.  William Andrew was "rescued at gunpoint by his uncle Bob GRIMES" when he was about 14, so this would be in the early 1890's.  Any information whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

I found the ForestLawn cemetery I previously inquired about.  It was in Dallas!   Older relatives were confused about who was buried where.  I do have relatives buried in the old Norwood cemetery in Hearne but still cannot place the family of William Watkins or Asa Anderson in the 1880 or 1900 census although there are family photos labeled Hearne 1880. Any hints? Vicki

HILL/ FLANDERS
George F. Watson  Tue Jun 16, 1998 1:55 PM
Seeking info on Henry HILL, born Aug 1816 in Tennessee - in Nashville, Davidson County or surrounding area.  He left TN by 1850, went west and appears in Nevada in 1870.   He married in 1875 at Silver City, NV to Ellen M. (Nellie) FLANDERS.  They lived in Silver City (next to Virginia City) and then moved to Hawthorne, Esmeralda Co., NV., where Henry died in 1905.   We are checking our Henry John Alexander Hill as we don't know his birth date but he was born in  Warren Co., TN. and could be the same Henry b. in 1816.  He went west to Texas prior to 1850, and is a good possibility he is the same man.  At least we need to eliminate him. Thanks again for your help.  Virginia Watson

PINSON/ SWEAT
Larry Bates  Wed Nov 11 1998 3:48 PM
I am looking for information on Frank PINSON, nothing is known of the PINSON family other than Frank PINSON married Sarah SWEAT in Madison County in 1870, they moved shortly after to Robertson County. Sarah was born 1857, died 1888 in Robertson County and is buried at Post Oak, Frank may have been older than her. Frank has never been listed on any census and may only use the name 'Frank" as a nickname. They lived East of Bremond in the 1880's and it appears Frank didn't live with his family. Sarah PINSON'S father was Leonard SWEAT, he is known to have several criminal charges listed against him prior to his death in 1873 in Madison County. Frank may also have been from a criminal background which explains his numerous disappearances. Frank and Sarah had children which were born into the mid 1880's and then it appears Frank was no longer heard from. I am very interested in any information on the PINSON family in Robertson County as I have no information other than family records which state his name as Frank PINSON. Thank you. Larry Bates

10 th TEXAS INFANTRY CSA
WANTED: Decendants of the 10th Texas Infantry, CSA.

I have been researching for the past four years for a rather detailed regimental history of the 10th Texas Infantry, CSA. A portion of the research involved it to attempt to locate as many descendants as possible of said regiment; to date, the list totals 78. The following men of the regiment are related to Robertson County in some way: James T. SMITH, Joseph BUCKALOO, Thomas B. GUTHRIE, Daniel W. CASSEL, William E. COLLARD and William B. JUDAH. If you are a descendant of any of the above men, or of anyone that served in the 10th Texas Infantry, I would appreciate a response. My address is:

BENNETT/ BINION/ SMITH
Benjamin Franklin BENNETT, (b. 1840, Miss., d. 20 May 1875, Houston or Calvert). He lived in Calvert, Robertson Co., with Annie Emma BINION and was the putative father of Mary Ann BENNETT, (b. 1867, MS, d. 1922, Tucson AZ). Annie Emma and dau often lived with her sister Gertrude Binion CARR, wife of Titus CARR of Robertson County. Annie Emma m. Nov. 1876 to Fredrick G. SMITH,(b. England 1836, naturalized 1866, d? Travis County). Very little information about Franklin BENNETT. One story says he was shot in 1875 by the man whom he beat in a Judges Election in Houston. However, history book say District Judges were not first elected in TX until 1876. Another story says masked bandits abducted him from his "wife" on their wedding night, and he reappeared 10 years later. Yet another family story says he was a member of a band of highwaymen and appeared every few years for a night or so- long enough to father two more children-- one an infant death, and the second William Franklin BENNETT. Personally I feel these stories were to cover up the fact that they did not marry and that he was only an occasional visitor. In 1869 in Noxubee Co, Miss, Annie's father dies and the estate papers list "daughter Gerturde Carr and husband Titus Car, living in Texas, dau Annie Emma Binion, living in Texas" Were she married, her lawyer brother would have had to list Franklin on the estate papers. QUERY: Does anyone know anything about Benjamin Franklin BENNETT? When died, how died, where died? John F. O'Hanlon, Tucson, Arizona

CHANDLER/ MILLER
Am looking for information and other descendants of Eli CHANDLER who came to the Robertson Colony in 1836 from Madison Co TN. He and his family are shown on the 1850 census of Robertson Co, and court house records indicate his death at Wheelock in 1858. What happened to his wife, Mary and son, William? My ancestor, Susan Caroline CHANDLER, married William MILLER in Robertson Co in 1854, and had children; Mary Ann ("Mollie"), Francis Elizabeth ("Fanny"), and Joseph. Susan Caroline (CHANDLER) MILLER died in 1861, and William MILLER died in 1864, Confederate Army. For some unknown reason the three children (grown) appeared in Jasper Co MO, listed on the 1880 census. On that census two of them listed William MILLER (their father)'s place of birth as "KY" (NFI). Will exchange info.

ROGERS
I am trying to identify Sam ROGERS who was a judge in Robertson County, TX, in the early 1900s, and perhaps earlier. My mother, a daughter of William Jefferson Canady & Sallie Elizabeth Damron and grand daughter of Thomas Jefferson Canady & Henrietta Emily Kyser (both originally from AL), recalls that Sam visited her family when she was a child in the late 1910s and 1920s. He was supposedly a relative but she does not know how although it is probable that it was through the Canady or Kyser lines with roots in Alabama. She thinks that he had a sister. Any assistance would be appreciated. Charles C. Chaney
