Breaking Census News

Volunteer Monica R. Hague has started typing transcripts of the 1880 Robertson County Census.  Enumeration District #142, the precinct around Wheelock, is already online.  Monica is now working on Enumeration District #141.  Thank you Monica!  If any other volunteers care to assist Monica in this massive undertaking, please contact her at monicawortrav@earthlink.net.

No online indexes or typed transcripts currently exist for the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930 handwritten census records for Robertson County.  The only way to review the contents of these records at this site is to go through each census year line-by-line yourself.  This is a time-consuming and difficult process since the handwriting is sometimes faint and difficult to decipher.  Given the hours and hours of research that would be required to look for a single name or group of names, no census look-up service is available.  It is also highly unlikely that anyone possesses information concerning your family's precise location in the census data.  Researchers can either review the information that is online at this site themselves or go to a National Archives regional office, closest Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints Family History Center, or other local library and conduct a Soundex search to determine where relatives might appear on census records for different years.  Then, after you have identified where each record is located, access the census data online at this site and go to the correct year, enumeration district, page, and line number.

With all available handwritten census years online, it is hoped that at some point interested individuals will volunteer to create typewritten transcripts of the handwritten census years that are online at this site.  During this process, an index to each census year could be created.  No efforts are currently underway at the Robertson County site to create typewritten transcripts or indexes for any of the census years that don't already have transcripts or indexes.

If you're working in Internet Explorer 6 and the images become small after loading when accessing one of the handwritten census pages below, try the following:  Go to Tools, then Internet Options, then Advanced, then under Multimedia, you will see Enable Automatic Image Resizing.  If you uncheck the box next to Enable Automatic Image Resizing and save your changes, the images on your computer screen will remain large and readable.

If you're working in WindowsXP (previous versions probably have a similar feature) and wish to magnify images on your computer screen, try the following:  Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Accessibility, then Magnifier.  This will engage WindowsXP's built-in magnifying feature.  A short magnifying screen will appear at the top of your pages; the rest of your screen will show your regular view.  The images on the screen at the top will follow your cursor around the page and magnify whatever your cursor is on.
