Runnels County was formed on December 1, 1858 from Bexar and Travis Counties.
It was named for Hiram G. Runnels, former Governor of Mississippi and a member of the Texas Legislature.
The county wasn't organized until 1880 when Runnels City was selected as the county seat, so earlier records pertaining to Runnels County people could be found in Coleman or Brown County.
