Former President National, Mrs. Frederick B. Ingram of Dallas, Texas, established this scholarship to honor her mother, Mrs. Alvin V. Lane, who was President of the Texas Society. On March 15, 1915, Mrs. Lane became Organizing President of John Cavet #39 Chapter in Dallas. Her grandparents were John Huey and Margaret Cavet, who was the daughter of the 1812 ancestor, John Cavet, and his wife, Jean McKean. Mrs. Lane graduated from the Alta Vista Institute of Austin and married University of Texas Professor Alvin Valentine Lane. Mrs. Lane not only served as President of the Texas State Society from 1915 to 1917, but was the first woman from Texas to serve on the National Board as Second Vice President in 1927. She also served as Texas Treasurer and State Parliamentarian. At the time of her death on October 31, 1941, Mrs. Lane had been very active in city, state, and national civic, church, and lineage groups. She was survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alice Lane Ingram, Mrs. W. J. Morris, and one son, Alvin H. Lane of Dallas, Texas; a sister, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Texas State Associate Council meeting in 1939 voted to create a permanent fund of $500.00 to be known as the Lulie Hughey Lane Scholarship Fund. It was used at first to add more money to an existing scholarship to aid more 4-H Girls to attend a short summer course at Texas A&M University to broaden their training. In 1942, the Scholarship at A&M for 4-H Girls had to be discontinued because their school was needed for training servicemen. The funds were placed in the Lulie Hughty Lane Fund, and War Bonds were purchased. At this time, war work was the primary concern of the Texas Society. In 1946, Mrs. Lane's daughter, Mrs. Frederick B. Ingram of Dallas, was serving as Vice President National. In 1948, she became President National. She worked hard to get funds into the Lulie Hughey Lane Scholarship, and since 1950, the Scholarship was presented to one or two Texas A&M Cadets each year. |
