Ancestor and Applicant

In November, 1994, the Board of Directors of the Texas State Genealogical Society approved the Texas First Families Certificate Program.  This project was to honor those settlers who lived in Texas when it became a state and to enhance the 150th Anniversary of Texas statehood, February 19, 1996.  The program was to be completed by  December 31, 1996; however, due to its popularity, the board voted to make this an open project.

To obtain this certificate, each applicant was required to prove his or her linage from the early Texas Ancestor through documentation and to prove that this ancestor was in Texas by 19 February 1846.  The first application was received in March, 1995.

In 1998, the collection of 4700 lineage pages were filmed for microfilm and microfiche.  In 1999, an index of ancestors and applicants was printed.  In July, 2000, 4904 applications and proof documents were donated to the manuscript collection of the Center for American History University of Texas, Austin, Texas 78712, (512-495-4515) where they may be reviewed by researchers in genealogy of early Texas history. It is necessary to give the research center three to five days notice if one wishes to see these records.

Texas First Families Lineages, Volume 1, containing the lineages for numbers 1 through 2400, was published in October, 2000.  TSGS would like to thank all of those who have participated and supported this project.  Special commendation is given to Rose Griffin Covert, Beverly Wyatt, Ann Rickard, Foy Howell, Jane Debenport, Janice Ratliff, Nelda Galyean Baker, and Terri Pearce, who have assisted with the typing and proofreading of the material for this volume.

Texas First Families Lineages, Volume 2, contains the lineages for numbers 2401 through 5278, was published in December, 2004.  TSGS would like to thank Doris Cozart for her determination and the many long hours in preparing this book for publication.  We also appreciate all of the other members who have helped in this effort.

As new certificates are issued, we will publish those names on the TSGS website.

Applications may be downloaded from the TSGS website, and additional information about applications or interest in purchasing Texas First Families Vol. 1 and/or Texas First Families Vol. 2, please contact:
